  1. Okay guys, I just heard that it is totaled. They said that the car was valued at 6500. Should I try to argue with them that it was worth more than that, or are they set on it. It was in excellent mechanical condition and had rare options. I will let you know what I find out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. Okay, so quick question. If I do have to look for anothe LS should I look for a 93-94 or just find a nice 90-92. I know of the changes, but not sure if it is worth the extra to get. Just let me know. Thanks for your respones.
  3. Okay, so this is what happened. I was doing about 40 and came up to a slight curve to left which also happened to be at an incline, I definately felt that I was doing a safe speed. I was already into the turn and doing fine. Then halfway throught the turn the back end came out and the car turned around as it was headed to the other lane. It crossed the lane and the front right corner hit first, and then the back right corner hit, which took most of the hit. And I dont think that TRAC did anything because the back tires didnt spin, the car just switched directions. Yeah, I was so exicted to find a car with air ride and all the options. I will have to look really hard to find another. Thanks for the respones. I still want to know what everyone thinks on if it is totaled or not. I am pretty sure it is, from people have told me. I mean, it is 13 years old with 171,000 miles. I dont know much about bodywork, but it sounds like it will cost a bit to fix. I just wish insurance would hurry up and get it done with. I should know more tomorrow.
  4. Thanks for you replies. You are right, I can find another. But I am so picky, it will be really hard to find an LS I want. Once you get this old it is hard to find one that has been well maintained and in the condition you want. I hope it wont be too hard. I just want the insurance company to hurry up on this.
  5. Thanks....I'll look into that....anyone else with ideas on if it will be totaled or not?
  6. So, I still do not know from the insurance. Someone is suppossed to look at it tomorrow. Do you think it will be totaled? If not, do you think I should have it fixed or not? Thanks for all your help.
  7. One more time.....I hope this works.
  8. Thanks for the help, I am trying to get this to work. But, how do I add the pictures without doing an attachment, like you did when you posted your pictures?
  9. I forgot to ask....does anyone know how to post pictures without making them an attachment.....they are very big....thanks!!
  10. Hey guys, I got pics of the car today. But, they are too big to post on here. Email me at blawilso@indiana.edu if you would like to see. I am really interested to see what the insurance has to say. I should know more tomorrow.
  11. Thanks for your responses. I was going the posted speed limit which was 40 mph. As I said, it was a very slight turn, and I was already well into the turn before it lost control. But, I did not slow down at all once it started to slide. So, after the light front hit, the back did hit at a pretty high speed. I know, I would like it to be as good as new, but I just hate the idea of a the whole back right corner being put back together by a body shop. I should find out more today.
  12. Thanks for the responses. There wasn't actually a turn in the road, it was just a slight bend. I wasn't very clear on that. But, like I said it had been raining and the tires were in need of replacement. So, as I came into this bend the car turned around and did go the opposite direction as the front right corner hit the guard rail lightly and then the back right corner took the beating as it slammed into the guard rail. That is where the most damage is. From right at where the gas filler is to the end of the tail light on the back of the car, by the break for the license plate, the whole corner is pushed in about a foot or so. I will try to get pics up soon. But, I still would like to know, if the car isn't totaled, and the insurance company pays for repairs, do I have to use this money to repair the car, or could I sell the car to a junkyard and put the money towards a new LS? I am only concerned becuase I feel I would have a much harder time selling the car after this kinda of damage, and becuase I am not a fan of a car with a lot of bodywork. No matter how good the work is, it can never be as good as the factory. Thanks so much for your responses!!
  13. Hey guys, this weekend was pretty bad for my LS. I was travelling at about 40 miles an hour when I came upon a small turn. I had bad tires and was just about to order new ones, so I didnt have much traction. Also, the roads were very slippery from a rain. Anyway, I lost control and turned around with my front passenger side corner hitting the guardrail first, followed by the back passenger side corner. The front didnt take much of a hit, but the back is pretty bad. The whole back corner is pushed in over a foot. The guard rail was tall enough to push pretty much everything on the whole corner in. The front only received a shattered headlight and some sheetmetal damage. In the back, I am pretty sure that the frame was exposed and that it did receive some damage. The car has 171,000 miles on it and every option that was available. So, I am wondering, any ideas on if the car will be totaled, as it is 13 years old with 171,000 miles. Also, if the car is not totaled, and it is repaired, will the frame damage be a big deal in resale? Also, if it is not totaled and the insurance company cuts a check for repairs, does this money have to go towards repairs or not. I am only wondering because I am not sure that I would want to try to resale a car that had been in this kind of accident. I will try to get some pictures up as soon as I can. Thanks for your help.
  14. The remote system uses minimal battery power. You should not worry about it. There are many electrical components that continue to use battery power while the car is turned off. The remote barely uses any extra power. I leave mine on all the time and have never had a problem with it.
  15. 99- I also have a 91 LS400 with 170K miles and use synthetic oil. The previous owner used standard oil, but I could definitely tell a difference when I started putting synthetic in it. I would use a 5w-30 synthetic. The 5w-30 is the recommended viscosity for the LS, although 10w-30 would also work. I use Pennzoil 5w-30 synthetic oil and it has been great in my car. As far as the oil change interval, I would still recommend changing every 3000. Although many synthetics are formulated to last longer than conventional oil, it still gets dirty and I find it best to continue changing at 3000 miles. This will keep cleaner oil in your car and can extend the life of the engine.
  16. The most likely scenario is that the volume knob for the lock/unlock beep is turned all the way down. The control should be located near the driver's left knee by the mirror controls. I beleive it is just a black knob. Turn the knob to the right to increase the volume. If this does not work, then it may be the settings in the car's computer. The dealer should be able to change the settings for fairly cheap, but I would check for the volume control knob first.
  17. I would say yes, but no. It could definetly beat the Caprice off the line, but is may not "smoke" it. The cars weigh about the same but the model year will be a major factor. www.car-stats.com lists the Caprice's 0-60 at 10.3 in 1992 and 8.5 in 1993. (It got a lot more torque in 1993.) A first generation LS (1990-1994) is listed at 8 seconds for 0-60. The second generation of the LS (1995-1997) improved to 7.4 seconds and went to 6.4 for the 1998-2000 style. The model year of both cars it definetly a big factor, but I would say the LS400 would win in either situation, but the margin of victory will depend on the model years. Aftermarket tuning is also very popular on the Caprice and could easily change the outcome of the race.
  18. I have a 1991 LS400 that also recently had the same problem. I had the A/C recharged for about $175 and it works like new now.
  19. You may be able to buy a set from the parts department at your local Lexus dealer but that is about the only place that might have new center caps. Otherwise, you should be able to find some used center caps in good condition on Ebay. Good Luck
  20. You can go to the Lexus website (www.lexus.com) and register as a Lexus owner. Click on the "Owners" button on the main page and then go to "Register Today." After you log in, go to "Order Owners Manual" under the "Quick Links" directory. Lexus will send you owners manuals as well as supplements from any year and model as long as you are a Lexus owner.
  21. GSsoldier- I would only recommend getting black tint on the LS. I have a black 1991 LS400 with black tint and it looks great! I think if you get any other color, it will not look the way you want it to. The LS is a luxury automobile and the colored tints seem to detract from that luxury appeal. The black tint keeps the sleak and elegant look alive.
  22. I agree, 18"+ is just overdoing it on the LS400. I think it looks best with 16" or 17" wheels. I would love to find some newer model LS wheels for my 1991 LS400. If anyone has pictures of first generation LS400s with newer model wheels, please post them so I can see how they look. I am particularly interested in the 17" 5-spoke LS430 wheels that were optional for 2001-2002 and became standard in 2003 or the 1998-2000 style wheels.
