  1. Nothing to apologize for... just offering a suggestion (a good one, I think) to make the forum a better place. ;)
  2. We should create a new permanent thread entitled "EVERYTHING New GS Owners Should Know" in order to quell these annoyingly frequent, but very important, repeat questions. Mods?
  3. Read the information in the thread listed below - this should work for your car: http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...0&hl=stereo I adjusted the EQ settings from 0 to 3 on the Pioneer in my '98 and the difference is incredible.
  4. Here is a great thread on this subject from an earlier discussion we had: http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...899&hl=door Last post is by me :D giving step-by-step on R/R for this part. Have fun!
  5. Nice first car! Welcome to the forum. Spend a little time learning about the Search function and you can get lots of information right away about your '97 without having to wait for people to respond. You'll find that many of your questions about mods etc. have already been answered in our archives.
  6. Anyone run these tires in either HR or VR? TireRack speaks highly of them in their tests and the customer reviews are overwhelmingly positive. At $75 a pop for HR rated 16" tires these appear to be a great option versus some of the others like Michelin and Goodyear.
  7. If you connected the battery backwards you probably fried something in the engine management/computer/electronics area of the wiring even though you did not crank the engine.
  8. Large majority of this price is probably labor. Use the Search Function in this forum and you will find tons of information as well as prices (some appropriate, some not so) we have been quoted for this type of service. Most of us DIY when it comes to spark plugs.
  9. I use the correct 91 octane in my car. If I find myself at a station that only offers 87, 89 and 93 I go with the 93 instead of the 89. Better two points too high than two points too low. I'm not sure why you included this octane information in this thread? We were discussing the best and most widely available brands of premium gasoline...
  10. Best bet for East Coast is Sunoco. You'll find them everywhere from FL to ME and they will have the exact octane grade your car requires. My 98 GS3 requires 91 and Sunoco has it. Other stations have 87, 89, and 93 so I'm forced to pay for 93 if I can't find a Sunoco. Not sure about what you'll find in The Great White North.
  11. Use the Search function in this (GS) forum and you will find a ton of information about this door lock issue. It will be faster than waiting for someone to answer your post.
  12. ALWAYS replace lower ball joints in pairs. If one is bad the other can't be far behind unless some dunce already replaced the left w/o replacing the right. If you're not sure or have no records just replace both. If a lower joint fails you risk THIS:
  13. Remotes use one (1) 3V Duracell # DL1616 / CR1616. Battery is about the size of a dime. You need a watch maker's phillips head screwdriver to disassemble the case in order to change the battery.
  14. My key remote is having another problem. I just changed the battery and everything went smoothly. I did not damage the key or transmitter. The problem is the Unlock button does not work (no red light on key head) unless I press the Lock button first. If I press Lock, then press Unlock the transmitter works (locks and then unlocks) the car. But I can't just press Unlock on the key head once to unlock the car. Any idea what the problem is?
  15. I didn't see the part about no shipping to Canada, but if you click on the link at the top of the page for "Canadian Tire" (located in Brampton Ontario AKA CANADA) you can get one. If you have CounterAct system you wouldn't need undercoating to stop rust, would you? ;) The scientific theory is sound and it should work. No I don't have one. No I don't work for them. Yes I'm just trying to help.
  16. Look into installing a CounterAct system. http://www.counteractrust.com
  17. ...So i go to my mechanic, he says the contacts maybe on its way- however he said my terminals were unusually corroded, i told him the battery was changed not more than a month ago- and I DO remember the terminals being srubbed , cleaned greased- he thought the corrosion on the terminals look like a heck of alot more than a month... Well, it sounds like you have a sub-standard battery there. My original Lexus (Panasonic) battery lasted for 10 YEARS, so when it was time to replace it you bet I went back to Lexus for one of their OEM batteries. Probably cost me about $40 more than a Wally World battery but it's worth it IMHO. The trouble you're having seems to support my opinion. BTW, after 10 years of service there wasn't one speck of corrosion on either of the Panasonic's terminals.
  18. I'd be willing to bet the remote start mechanism has everything to do with your problem. If you don't have a really good reason for having that thing I'd recommend you remove it entirely and put the starting system back to stock.
  19. How many miles on the car? Sounds like it could be the starter solenoid if the battery and charging system are OK. You should probably check the wiring to the solenoid before replacing anything - it may be loose or corroded. I know they use lots of road salt in NY during winter, so you may have a bad connection at the starter. Just a thought...
  20. OEM style units (minus connector) can be had at thepartsbin.com. If you must have Bosch you will pay more, and you may still need to reuse the connector.
  21. You know what they say, if you're gonna drink all day you gotta start early! No part cleaning for me thanks... I'll spend the sixty bucks, change the part in ten minutes and then do something worthwhile with my time.
  22. YES!!! Thanks for confirming what common sense allowed me to suspect. Big picture: I am in 1000% agreement with you on the forces that would have us fork over unnecessary money to feed the beast. The turmoil we see in our economy right now is, in my opinion, the tip of a mountainous iceberg that is starting to finally come into focus for the general, non-contemplative population. That iceberg is the percentage of our economy which is total nonsense. And it is a BIG chunk of our economy. We have so completely succumbed to marketing forces, which have played on envy, fear, vanity and general laziness to sell us all sorts of crap we don't need. And now that the economy depends on sales of such crap, and we are starting to realize that we don't really need this crap, massive pain is forthcoming. I just wish I could pocket the monetary value of, for example, the unconsumed coffee that gets poured out each morning across the country. I'd be richer than Bill Gates in short order. Non contemplative? OK, dust off the soap box. The cleaning method you guys mention must take about 2 hours - probably more. My time is worth a hell of a lot more than $30 an hour, so when you consider the $60 cost of a new oxygen sensor my afternoon is better spent just replacing the thing and calling it done properly. While you guys are scrubbing your parts I can be out donating my time to plant trees or pick up litter along the highway. IMHO you should consider reducing the release of toxic chemicals contained in Gum Cutter and Brake-Kleen (toluene, acetone, methanol, xylene and chlorotoluene) into the environment. And, if your cleaning process fails you will continue to over-pollute the environment with your vehicle. I don't think the efficiency of a cleaned 60K mile unit can ever match the efficiency of a new unit. Happy Earth Day everyone!
  23. They "wear out" due to being exposed to the extreme heat of the exhaust system, and due to carbon build-up from the exhaust itself. There is a built in service life of about 60K miles at time of manufacture at which time most are recommended for replacement to keep the engine running efficiently and also to keep fuel economy up.
