  1. The advice about the power flush could be accurate -- if you trust your Lexus service advisor then I'd say follow his advice. Here's the thing with transmissions: they are easy to ignore until you have problems, like the problem you are having now. So generally speaking they are ignored for thousands of miles, foresaking fluid and filter changes until they start to act funny. I'd say that a "regular" transmission service that includes replacing the filter and draining/refilling the fluid could get you back to proper operation. Let your trusted mechanic do this, and if it doesn't work then look into having either Lexus or a transmission shop give you a diagnosis along with a quote for repairs. Here's a word of caution regarding transmission shops. In 30 years of messing around with every kind of car imaginable I have never found a truly honest tranny shop. Their solution always seems to rebuild your transmission or to swap your existing transmission out for a rebuilt unit. Be careful.
  2. Figure out a way to hire one. Work a second or even a third job if you have to. Borrow the money if you have to. Get an attorney "from town" who frequently works the courthouse in your municipality. He will know the prosecutor and he will know the judge, and if he's a decent attorney he will be respected in that courtroom. He will know the best way to get your charges reduced, and like the others have said it will be the best $$ you ever spent. When you hire counsel let him know right away about that nonsense of putting your mom's DL on the form - that was not a smart thing to do.
  3. Can someone direct me to the best DIY thread for step-by-step to perform a 90K mile timing belt, coolant pump, coolant & thermostat change? 98 GS300 2JZ-GE Any suggestions for best place to buy OEM parts is also welcome - thanks! :)
  4. Get a satellite radio that includes an FM modulator unit. It allows you to use the FM tuner on your GS radio, but it injects the satellite signal directly into the antenna coax line so the sound is crystal clear.
  5. Just be sure bolt pattern, offset and tire sizes are correct. Regardless of how good/bad it looks get ready for lots of people asking you why you did this, Infiniti & Lexus people alike. Especially if you keep the Infiniti center caps.
  6. Call Crutchfield and get one of their GS300 wiring harness adapters for the aftermarket radio you have.
  7. Anyone have the 11733 Borla rear silencers? They go for about $650 a set -- are these any good? They look totally HQ online and I'm ready to buy a set but figured I would ask for comments about quality and sound here first.
  8. My '98 GS400 with 175,000 miles is not effective in snow, and certainly not on ice, which we get in the Pacific Northwest because salt isn't permitted and sand is used sparingly. This is hill and mountain country, not for the timid or reckless. 2nd car is AWD with 4 Nokian Studded Snow Tires on dedicated wheels. Pricey but only way to go in a safe fashion. Next best way is staying home in front of a crackling HD TV Fireplace. Jetstream Eugene, OR. I always wondered when the Pacific Northwest would consider the safety (and lives, actually) of their citizens over the concern for adding a little salt to Puget Sound. Sounds like the environmentalists are still winning. In any event, placing good snow tires on steel wheels at all four corners will help a great deal when driving in winter conditions. In light snow, traction control proves to be quite helpful. Anything over 6" and I turn VSC off. Bottom line is that the RWD GS doesn't go well in the snow and there isn't really much that can be done about it.
  9. So Steve, is it best to go in and ask for just new inserts, or replace the whole blade? I assume that it is easy to replace yourself eitherway. My problem is that I have always had a thin film of water that is left briefly when the wipers sweep. I think that this has always been there, but seems to be getting worse. Not sure if replacing the blades is even the best thing to do or not. Boston Snowboarder 05 ES330 Get the inserts only from your local Lexus dealer. It takes literally one minute per side to change them. There is no reason whatsoever to buy the entire blade assembly when it is the rubber insert that touches the windshield, and therefore the part that wears out over time.
  10. Do you hear it when you first start the car or does it happen randomly? The noise you describe is totally normal for the first 5-10 seconds after the car is first started as systems (like ABS, VSC) start up and adjust themselves before you begin driving the car.
  11. Yes legend11, you need to bring your seller up to speed on the latest Blue Book prices. In just the last 12 months the Private Party selling price of the car in question has fallen by about $3,500. Sad for the seller but very good news for you. All used car prices have depreciated at an accelerated rate due to the deals available on new cars because of the slowdown in the economy.
  12. I would suggest you only use a Lexus replacement battery. My '98 GS3 came with a Panasonic battery from the factory in Japan that lasted 10 years! I don't think you want some dumb looking yellow or red top battery sitting in the pristine engine bay of your '05, do you? Come original. His 05 has an OEM battery in it... it obviously hasn't lasted 10 years. My 02's OEM battery lasted a good 4 years... but for what an OEM battery cost, just go with another brand battery... chances are the black shroud that was with the old battery will still fit over the new one. My experience with the OEM Lexus battery was outstanding - 10 years of service is longer than ANY other OEM battery I have ever owned. I'm just relating my Lexus experience; Russ can read all of the comments and then decide for himself.
  13. No the doors does not lock by themselves when I put it on drive. I say the doesn't recognize them is the fact that when I unlock my doors and I open the rear doors the car re-lock by itself like if I never unlock the door. And yes I'm sure that the car is on and in park and my foot is not on the brake. Last time I went to LEXUS they told me that the 98's can't be programmed to lock and unlock when I put the car on drive and Park, but what I found weird is the soonest that I put the car on drive I hear the clik like if the doors was unlock but nothing never happens. I'm just trying to get my facts before I got back to them and tried to get everything fixed. Your rear lock mechanisms are bad. When you open rear doors the lock mechanism is not turning on the door lights, so the computer does not know the door is open. After about 15 seconds the car will lock itself again. Replace the rear lock mechanisms and your lights will work again and the computer will know when the doors are open - so the car will not lock itself at the wrong time. Not sure about your memory seats, but you might want to try resetting (MEM) both #1 and #2 - maybe the original memory positions just got erased from the computer somehow. Good luck.
  14. Fram (Allied Signal) filters are Cheap-O. Many models use cardboard internal components and also lack anti-drainback valves. This can cause oil starved starting in some engines. Use OEM Lexus/Toyota, Amsoil or Wix.
  15. New oils have either reduced or totally eliminated ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate) in their formulations. ZDDP is generally recognized to be important for camshaft lubrication, especially in cars with flat-tappet camshafts. Oils listed as "high mileage" formulation generally contain ZDDP. High mileage oils with ZDDP meet the "SF" oil classification used prior to 1988. Your modern 2003 GS doesn't need ZDDP, regardless of mileage.
  16. It is a bad electrical contact in your door striker mechanism. This is a very common problem on the GS. Most of us just live with it because in order to correct you have to replace the entire internal lock mechanism which can cost a few hundred $$ if you buy the replacement part form Lexus. I guess it can be disassembled and fixed but I don't know anyone who has done it, and I don't recall any discussions about that on this forum.
  17. Gives you a good chance to find that rattle behind the dashboard... :P
  18. General Altimax HP directional tires are awesome on this car. You can get away with H rated but V rated is also available for just a few bucks more. I have Vs on my 98 and could not be happier with price v.s. performance.
  19. For light alloy I like Enkei Racing RPF1 one-piece wheels.
  20. This is not a common problem and it is the first time I can remember seeing it on the GS forum. The previous owner must have been a gorilla and really wanked on those locking lugs. I would suggest you go to the dealer to get a new set. They are manufactured by McGuard, so you may be able to buy direct from them - not sure. Wheel locks will only stop "honest thieves" anyway, but having them on is certainly better than not having them on. When you put them on make sure to look up the proper torque and use a torque wrench to tighten not only them but the other lugs as well.
  21. YES CRANKS BUT WONT TURN OVER. UNTIL I WAIT ABOUT 15-20 OR 2 HOURS LATER MINUTES THEN IT STARTS WITHOUT A PROBLEM...WEIRD. Typing in ALL CAPS is shouting on this (or any) forum - are you yelling at someone?
  22. Please explain what you mean by exceedingly poor results & which Avid tires you are talking about. Talking about Avid Touring tires. Chose them because the tread pattern seemed to have a "Michelin style design" so I figured it was worth a try. Steering response on my GS got noticibly worse and road noise went up significantly. Started to notice uneven wear on inside edges of all four tires so brought the car back to Lexus for 4-wheel alignment. Everything was within specs, but tires continued to wear unevenly. Also noticed rear tires "breaking loose" even with VSC turned on. Traction in wet went down significantly - no side exit channels for rainwater in this tire's tread design. Just not a great tire for the RWD GS in my humble but experienced opinion. The H4S could be a better tire but I'd stay away from Yokohama in general based on my past experience.
  23. I think your ES is not nearly as sensitive to use of the proper tires as compared to the GS. I have had exceedingly poor results with Yoko Avid tires on my GS and would whole-heartedly recommend against using them on a GS.
  24. I just put a set of General Altimax HP V-Rated 215/60-16 directional tires on my 98 GS3 and they are awesome! Got them from thetirerack.com delivered in one day (DE to PA), paid $78 each for them and just received a General Tire VISA Gift Card for $50 in the mail as a rebate. I could not possibly be happier.
  25. The Royal Purple line of lubricants is superb.
