  1. I have an 04 SC430. Had the same problem, the dealer found sand/pebble in the mechanism and gave it a good cleaning. Don't know exactly where they found the "junk" but this fixed the problem. Hope this helps
  2. I purchased my 04SC430 used in Oct 07 (used, obviously). I agree with the depends on where you live and your other expenses from previous post. We have two kids, my wife does not work out side of the home. We make a good living, engineer by degree, in Raleigh NC, I'm 45 my wife 40. My mortgage is less than 10% of my gross monthly. The only debt/payments we have is our mortgage and a positive cash flow rental property mortgage. Income, sorry no say. IMHO, if you can max out your 401Ks and IRAS and still put some aside for emergencies, vacations, etc then you are doing just fine. Please no flames, just my opinion. Kevin
  3. I just bought my 04 6 months ago... Standard Stuff: Check the oil, make sure it is mostly clear, most dealers will change it before you get it How much tread on the tires? CarFax, if not clean (no accidents, etc) drop the price, look at ebay autos also, check out the finished and sold auctions. When does the warentee expire. With an 04, you may be able to get one with a few months remaining on the bumper to bumper. Check all the electronics and automatic stuff. Put the top up and down, couple times, it is very smooth. Verify the GPS works, if it is a Lexus dealer, request an upgrade to the DVD Verify the radio/cd changer/tape function, take six disks to insert and remove Verify the woofers are not blown check the seat controls and memories Stering wheel adjustments and memory Mirror adjustments and memory check the trunk, hook, gas opener check the climate control, both heat and ac Verify the tires. Runflats/no runflats. If no runflats does it have a spare? Look under the front, scratches How's the paint, swirl marks or spider webs, nicks, dents How do the wheels look, missing any lugs Everything in the "emergency kit" (jack, allen wrench, drivers, etc) Check the traction control and sport mode settings Cup holders/ash trey open/close smoothly Flaws in the wood and leather Doors, trunk, hook all close w/o effort, this car is solid and when the doors close the sound is solid, just a light push and they close completely. Drive. Top down and radio off, rattles, squeaks, etc. There should be NONE, NADA. The car is very solid. Owners manual Remember this was a ~$6x,000 MSRP new car, just coming out of bumper to bumper, it should still be in top notch condition. I did not even consider anything w/o a clean carfax. They may have been a better deal, and if you are handy with cars or know a mechanic that can work on these, well that may be a better choice for you. If you have other questions... sapp at pobox dot com Hope this helps. Kevin,
  4. Found multiple sites claiming a USASPEC PA12-TOY ipod adapter would work with my 04 SC430. Confirmed with a guy at USASPEC, but after calling and talking to the right people, USASPEC has nothing to work with the SC430. After the "install", the first time they started the car it did not sound correct, but it drove home fine (no stops). Radio, nav, seat warmers, climate all appear to work properly. I doubt they disconnected the battery, but pretty sure they disconnected the radio. Now the car will not start, nothing, nada, not even click click click (like a low battery). The steering wheel does not even come out when I put the key in. No lights on the dash either. I don't believe a light or anything was left on but I did not have time to check this morning, had to get to work :). The security light to the left of the steering wheel blinks, but that is about all. Did not check the overhead lights. So if it is a dead batter from a light or something left on, no problem. Is there anything with the security system that would make it not start, or anything in the dash area that if not connected or loosely connected would cause this? Thanks Kevin
  5. Providing an update. I took it in for some service and mentioned the roof noise to the service tech. The looked at it and found a rock and sand in the track and mechanisms. This was at Johnson Lexus in Raleigh. No charge, the roof is much more solid, no noise. First time taking it in, great service...
  6. Have an 04 SC430 with 32K miles. Second owner. I have some other work being performed and I was given an ES350 loaner (07 or 08). The ES shifting is MUCH MUCH smoother than the SC. When I punch the ES it responds with very little lag, the SC however has at least 1.5 to 2 seconds. Also when accelerating after coming out of a turn there is a definite lag also. Is this something that others experience or should I have Lexus look at it... Thanks Kevin
  7. Interesting about tossing into drive from reverse. I don't understand too much about cars, so is the same true for Neutral to Drive, for example if you just want to coast down a hill, then go to drive after your speed slows... Thanks
  8. I have an 04 SC430, about 31K miles... My roof will "thump" when I hit a bump with one side and not both. It also seems temperature and settling dependent. Inotherwords after pulling out of the garage into cooler weather for the first few minutes it seems to do it more. So, ones the roof gets settled into place it seems to stop... Anxious to hear what others say... Kevin
  9. Just purchased an 04 SC430. I have noticed that if the drivers side lumbar is not in the full support position that there is an occasional flexing of the lumbar support. It seems to give like something stiff that is convex (sp) and then pushed and changes to concave. Appears to happen when I put more pressure near the top of the lumbar (accelerating, breaking, turning) but not all the time. Any one else experience this? Still have some time on the bumper to bumper, so (hopefully) it will be covered under that. Thanks
