  1. As far as I know this is not possible. The LS400 alarm activates itself according to what your manual tells you, and deactivates itself as the manual says as well. My original keys do not have a toggle for turning the alarm on or off. If you have the factory alarm and immobilizer on your vehicle, I don;t think you will find a different key than the standard "non alarm" key.
  2. The glovebox in my 91 LS recommends 30 for the front and back, and then 35 for the backs under a high load condition. I keep all of my tires at 35 PSI all around for the most part in the summer, and at 30 in the winter unless I am loaded. Chek your glovebox, or driver door sticker, and go by that, and you cannot go wrong. Experiment as you research more on your own about the effects of lower and higher pressures.
  3. With our gas in Canada comparing to $3.81 per US Gallon ($1.10CDN/L), on occasion I have been hypermiling with my very old beaten up little 1985 Nissan Kingcab truck, and let me tell you, I imagine it will be much harder with an automatic transimission, and perhaps not as fun either, but I think you can do it for sure. Best of luck, and please do keep me informed. I highly recommend getting a few friends to join you for a long road trip during your trials, and drive in proximity to you on the highway, and maybe even give them a quick lesson in hypermiling ahead of time so you do not have to drop the hammer to keep up. PS - Very happy to see you value your paint, I cannot stand the shrapnel those big trucks toss at me
  4. If you were considering a new car recently, than this sounds like a good option, unless you can get more than $3500 for your car in a private sale. If not, why bother making the trade? lot of time the amount of energy used in the manufacturing of the new car, as well as the mining of the materials used to contruct the car, is not taken into account, and at a 4MPG improvement, it might not really help the environment out as much as one would think... And, to be honest, I got a steal on my 91 LS400 2 years ago in Vancouver and have a car which is nicer than most new vehicles, paid off, everyone thinks it was made in the 2000's, and it drives like a dream at 310,000 km's. If you are anything like me, Keep the cash in your account, enjoy your paid off LS, and swallow the whole few bucks per trip you take and call it a "luxury tax" for, well, riding in Luxury. Good luck!
  5. o2 sensors was one of the first jobs I did on my LS. Definitely go with Denso if you can, in Manitoba, Canada here, the local UAP/NAPA had me priced at $400(yes, four hundred) for EACH o2 sensor(front position), they were Denso OEM. I got a set from an ebay seller in florid new for $19 US a piece, and I also ordered a "universal" set as well. The universals were both wy off fromt he appropriate resistance readings, and were also far different from eachother. The Denso's were both exactly where they should be, and were almost identical with eachother as well.
  6. I think it is easily doable. Check out some of the driving habits of hypermilers. Get behind a fair sized semi-truck pulling 1 or two trailers(make sure he has EXCELLENT mudflaps to protect the dirt from your beautiful LS's hood, if their is more traffic, even better, and then go easy on the gas. On hills, speed up as you go down them, and try to coast as much as possible when going up them (roller coaster effect). Inflate the living *BLEEP* out of your tires, take your extra trunk mat out, and your floor mats, and don;t eat before you drive ;) Your driving habits will make more difference than you can imagine, and I do agree that very nice, clean, slick oils that are within the man. spec will do wonders for your MPG. Air filter will be another big one. Good luck, i would love to see you break the mark!
  7. 2004 Lexus LS430 Engine Type: 4.3 Liter 32-valve V8 DOHC. Curb Weight:3,957 Horsepower: 290 hp @ 5600 rpm Torque: 320 ft-lbs. @ 3400 rpm Transmission: 5-Speed Electronically Controlled Transmission with Intelligence (ECT-i) 0-60: 6.3 seconds Max Speed: 130 mph 1997 Mercedes E320 Engine Type: 3.2 Liter 24-valve I6 DOHC, Variable Valve Timing Curb Weight: 3,605 lbs Horsepower: 217 hp @ 5500 rpm Torque: 232 ft-lbs. @ 3850 rpm Transmission: 5-Speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission 0-60: ??? seconds Max Speed: ??? mph I was unable to find Acceleration and Top Speed numbers for you, but I did find that the 1998 E320 that had 3.2L V-6 rather than 1997's I-6 had a "faster" 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds, faster meaning faster than the 97 I-6. I feel you will be quite pleased with the power the LS will give you, especially when you look to pass someone ont he highway.
  8. My 91 drives like a brand new car, and looks and feels better than most of them too. 18 years old, 308,000 KMS Converts to: 191,000 miles
  9. Nothing wrong with Modding an LS, they are beautiful cars stock, and they look great when customized too, it's whatever floats your boat, hands on the tools and the wheel instead of guns and drugs, right?
  10. I'm with AZ, they should flip them back for you, just make sure they don;t go and flip the rim when your not looking to save time.
  11. I would borrow the money and save the springs in case you want to go back int he future to sell it to your grandpa ;)
  12. has 191,xxx on the clock. has roughly 84k on the engine and transmission that I put in it just 3500 miles ago. I love the car. I mean, I love looking at it, but I just can't quite grasp the idea of driving a big "gandpa" mobile. I have always had sports cars in my garage. I just picked this one up to try something new. I have been working on these cars for years and everybody loves them, so when I come across the deal on this one, I had to pick it up and fix it up. I just can't get over the fact that it just doesn't handle as good as my Corollas or Supras. That is why I picked up the IS300. I wanted a 4dr sports car. Very nice job man, I keep looking for gun turrets and missile launchers, I LOVE IT!
  13. You got it right. Snowbirds we are. We have a house in the Anthem Country Club-I17 to Flagstaff. It's a Great place. Very good eye too!!! How can you tell from the picture that my right front wheel in on the wrong side? Can you explain. Best Chris What!? You don't have a place in Mesa, not a true Snowbird then. As to your front wheel, if you compare the front and rear wheels on the right, the "spokes" or vent holes don't go the same way. I believe they're oriented such to help cool the brakes/rotors. Unfortunately the L and R stamped on the wheel is on the inner side of the wheel. You'd have to take it off to confirm but I'd bet you'll find an L stamped on it. Look at your spare tire and see if the wheel is stamped with an R. At some point along the way when getting new tires, the technician didn't realize the wheels are directional. I haven't read any threads here discussing tire rotation, but I believe this limits you to front/rear rotation only, not the X pattern. I'm not sure how big of a deal it is operationally but, to me, it's more of an aesthetic thing. How are they on the driver's side? If there both L's then the spare is most likely an R then you could have the tires swapped the next time you're due for a rotation. On my 90, one of the wheels was bent slightly but fortunately the spare wheel was for the same side. I'm not saying you have to do anything but just wanted to bring it to your attention. Congratulations, though, on having such a nice ride. From what I recall from my owners mnul i that there are three "R" wheels and 2 "L" wheels. More than likely because the "R" side is likeliest to get damaged on a curb. It is the radial tires that keep it from being an "x" pattern or tire rotation. More than likely all 4 tires got changes at the same time, it is a very easy rim to get backwards by accident, especially with more than one tech working on them, but I imagine you are better off leaving it facing in that direction until your next tire change, and flipping it to the other side may create some nasty tire issues.
  14. Did you purchase the stickon wood trim kit for that? If so, is that the ebay one? I always thought about it but figured it would cover my stereo scontrol wording so I knew what the buttons did on my radio. It looks awesome and I would love to get that for my 91. Let me know, thanks.
  15. Yeah, and they also have the steering wheel on the wrong side ;)
  16. 1991 LS400 Hey guys, long time no see. I have a code 71 here. I have the manuals on disk, the only problem is that the troubleshooting section for this code hooks me up with an electrically controlled EGR troubleshoot, rather than the pneumatic(basic) EGR system that my 91 has. If you have the manual, it is on page EG600 - to about EG610 I think. I haven;t officially doen the test on EG603, but that is what happens when my code appears after clearing it... Warms up, gets to highway speed, and on. I will probably just troubleshoot the temp sender anyways when I have time, but since I will have the EGR off for that anyways(again), I figured I should be ready this time. i have little EGR experience whasoever. It was cruddy inside last time i took it off(1 week ago), but I used a screwdriver to push up on the diphragm and it would move, but i am unsure how much pressure it is supposed to use. It definitely moves when I push it, but by no means is it super easy... Let me know if any of you have a quick troubleshoot for these EGR valves so I can hopefully rule it in or out soon. Thanks guys!
  17. Thanks man! LS is good, I have some nice summer rims and tires now, time for a pic, polished and waxed last spring as per your instruction, but it needs another treatment for this summer, just no time yet. LS went from Vancouver BC to Sydney, NS in one trip and then back to Manitoba, check it out, thats a fun trip, long with a kid... Finished that off last spring. Still rides oh so nice, but going to take care of some minor tedium, and, I think I might put myself into gear to buy some of these eagle-eyes and try to swap the glass lens over, just so much work on my new old house to do still(such is why I have been absent). Anyways, I will let this thread be now, and post my own pretty soon for my EGR issue (YUCK)
  18. Speaking of back from the dead, hows it going J-chrome? My Pops just bought an RX so I thought i would come back here for a while, that, nd I have some work to do on the 91 this summer ;)
  19. Speed ratings can be researched at most tire sites, your Lexus manual prefers a V-rated tire. Alot of owners on here from what I can tell really like Bridgestone Turanza's. I just got my set on (don;t ask, we have late summers and I had new wheel buying issues), and I like them so far, but a good long drive is needed to qualify that. H-rated is a safe bet, but it will(according to speed rating nomenclature), possibly lower your avoidance and reaction speed from steering wheel to road. Anyways, lunchtime is over, good luck, and let us know what you chose!
  20. EPR Valve. I have done some research about this little beauty.... I have a leak when i put it on the tester, it holds to about 250 lbs and then leaks out of the flange between the EPR valve and the piping body that the valve attached to.(4 little phillips screws). I took it apart, the o-ring looked fine, and the rubber that is attached to the shuttle looked fine, and no problems with the flange... Added some ester oil to the seals anyways and reinstalled. Result: Holds to 250 again and then leaks from the same spot. From what i understand is that this part is obsolete. The o-ring on the shuttle seems to be the only thing possible to change on this piece, but I am not so sure that will fix the leak, as the o-ring seemed to be in very good condition still. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
  21. I think you have narrowed your two choices down well... The LS is a real Luxury automobile, top of the line in every way. The Buick is one of America's last remaining stalwarts of reliability, with a supple ride feel, and usually a quiet ride as well. Gm has a brand called Cadillac, and dollar for dollar, Lexus surpasses it. Cadillac is considered superior to Buick in all ways except reliability and fuel economy(please correct me if I am wrong). Both will be good cars, but I feel that the LExus is a GREAT car. My Gen 1 91 LS400 rides nicer than most brand new cars, including Buick, and the depreciation will not be realized by my wallet due to the likely longevity of the car, as well as the low price I paid. I hope you make the choice thats best for you, and I think we all look forward to seeing pictures of your new Lexus!
  22. I changed my main O2 sensor witht hat code. www.lexls.com shows the resistance that should be reading on the O2 sensors in their O2 sensor tutorial. I got a Denso O2 sensor, same as the one they came with, but no plug on it off of Ebay for $30. I also got a universal one at the same time, and sent the universal back as it's resistance reading was way different than the denso, which was close to bang-on. In Canada, I got quote $410 for the O2 sensor part, no install from NAPA, and at Canadian tire the same deal is $295 but for a universal, so I have to recommend Ebay for them.
  23. Do you have a zero avenue on that side of the drink there Jcrome? i know we do along the mainland, unsure about on the island there though. As far as the flaps, I know what it's like driving through the neverending rain out there, and also whats it's like behind the dickheads without flaps....., i say keep em!
  24. I am having the same issue with my LS, please keep me posted with your results..... I found this link though that may help you out... http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...lfunction++code
  25. On my 91, I just burnt a fog light, and no indicator at all, however, when any of my 17,000 bulbs in the brake assebly burn out, I get an indication, so if I were you I wouldn't expect one, even on a new LS, although, I could be wrong?
