  1. Use oil or wd40 or silicone. i would wrap a cloth around the valve, and grip the valve with a needlenose plier and turn. A new PCV valve costs only around $7 or so and a new grommet, which you should replace anyway, costs only around $3. There is a grid below the PCV valve so any pieces will fall onto the grid and can be removed. If not for this grid i would have had to remove the entire valve cover - big job.
  2. 1995 ES300. When i tried removing mine, i had to lever it up with a screwdriver and it broke into pieces which fell into the valve cover. Keep a pair of long tweezers handy, just in case. I had to improvise using two pieces of a coat hanger as a long tweezer. Don't forget to change the grommet - available at NAPA
  3. A clogged PCV Valve is known to cause rough idle. Verify if the valve has been changed recently. The valve and grommet in my car were never changed and they broke into pieces and fell inside the valve cover when i tried to remove them. Took me an hour to fish out the pieces! Seafoaming the valve train should help if there are deposits in the valve train. However, these deposits provide sealing in older engines and cleaning these deposits out may cause oil to leak through the valve seals, piston rings etc., causing oil consumption and smoke from the exhaust. I suppose this is a risk that you will have to take. There is a Hirschmann brand antenna kit for $46 on ebay. I am planning to buy that for my car. Does the car whine when the ac is turned off? If so, it is not the compressor. Try spraying plenty of wd40 into the compressor bearings. this should clear any deposits after the engine runs for a couple of minutes. Then use lubricating oil to lubricate the bearings as wd40 will evaporate after a while. A loud whine is not normal and must be diagnosed. If the ac cools, but insufficiently, it could be that refrigerant is low. Check the pressure with a gauge and recharge if necessary. If the pressure is low then there is a leak somewhere. The purchase price is a steal and even if you put in $3500 into the car, you are still below the blue book - for a car that is known to last for 300K miles!!
  4. In the 1995 ES300 it is near the air filter, mounted on the driver side fender. Also just next to the fuel filter.
  5. I bought my 1995 Lexus ES300 at 165,500 miles and replaced the oil with Mobil Clean 5000 petroleum base oil. After 3000 miles, I changed the oil to Mobil 1 High mileage and the engine became a lot smoother during about 150 miles of driving. Recently, i started seeing blue smoke from the exhaust after an overnight cold startup for a few seconds or so. There is no oil in the coolant, and no coolant in the engine oil. The engine oil level appears to be the same. I just want to know if changing over to fully synthetic can cause the valve stem seals to leak? Or is it possible for the high mileage additives to cause this? I have read all other posts on engine smoke and i will run Bardahl No Smoke additive later.
  6. Very Interesting!! The 1995 ES300 users manual inside cover reads: 'Fuel Selection: Select Research Octane number 91 (Octane rating 87) or higher. For improved vehicle performance, the use of premium unleaded gasoline with a research octane number of 96 (octane rating 91) or higher is recommended.' After reading - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating - i found out that US gas station 87 gas is the minimum recommended for the ES300. The number 87 is not the Octane number after all, it is the mean of the Research octane number(RON) and Motor octane number (MON). It is best to use the user manuals recommended octane rating, as there is no benefit in using a higher octane rating gas. If your car pings or knocks at the recommended octane rating gas, then move up one rating level. The higher octane rating gas burns more slowly to prevent knocking. Check out: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/041008.html The quality of gas is less at the cheaper brands, especially at no-name stations, so more gas mileage with the better brands. Try each brand and measure the fuel mileage. I prefer Chevron or Shell.
  7. The PCV valve located on the valve cover may be clogged. This valve allows the gases that escape into the crankcase to be recirculated into the engine thro the intake manifold. A clogged PCV valve causes rough idle, high fuel consumption and sludge formation. This valve and mounting grommet would have become brittle with age and will break and fall into the valve cover when removed. Tweezers are required to remove the broken pieces. Napa stocks both the valve and grommet. The fuel filter becomes clogged, causing poor fuel delivery and poor acceleration. The fuel filter in the older Lexus' use a flare nut at the inlet end. I just stripped the nut today trying to take it off with an open ended wrench. A special wrench called a flare nut wrench is required to open the fuel filter nut. The torque required to open this nut is very high and only a power tool can unlock the nut. You will need to take it to a mechanic. Ask the mechanic to oil the threads before installing the new filter. Use a good brand complete fuel system cleaner for high mileage engines to clean the fuel injectors, valves, and combustion chamber. Good luck - let me know how this goes!!
  8. The 1995 Lexus ES300 does not have a computer chip or transponder in it. I made a duplicate key at a local locksmith in Fresno, CA for $45!! as it is a side cut key.
