  1. So the upper glove box in my 2001 LS430 won't latch. The male end, which is a metal loop inside the glovebox that the catch on the front of the door grabs broke off. The "loop" is really a "U" shape where the open ends of the "U" were welded into the glovebox somewhere. Now I was able to get a light in there and see that there is a screw which appears to be holding on a small backet (maybe 1x1 inch) that the catch was welded to, but when I removed the screw that plat won't come out, and I'm not sure it looks like it supposed to come out. Any thoughts? I saw the process for removing the glovebox on my repair manual, but I really hate removing trim because I always feel like I am going to (and sometimes do) scratch / chip / break the pieces. I can post pictures if it will help anyone.
  2. Any update on this? I think I might need to replace the front bearings on my 2001 LS430 with 105,000 miles.
  3. I've got a 2001 LS430 and I'm trying to replace the rear tail light (the third / top brake light on the back deck) and I can't figure out how to get to it! I looked in the trunk under the blub but all I see is rivited panels. I also tried to remove the plastic cover from inside the car, but it doesn't seem to budge. There don't appear to be any screws or screw covers from inside the cabin of the car.
  4. Any suggestions? I've got a 2001 LS430 that will be needing a timing belt replacement soon.
  5. So I thought everything was fixed, but every so often all of the buttons go disabled again and I can't enter a destination (I'm in park). Forcing a re-install of the software seems to fix the problem, but it's very annoying. I've recently moved to NC and it's happening more often (can't decide if that's because I'm driving it more or because I changed locations?). Any thoughts?
  6. I managed to get an OEM 7.1 DVD, and it fixed all of the problems.
  7. So I bought one of those 7.1 navigation DVD's on eBay for $50. I threw it into the unit in the back (after some trouble realizing that there is a button behind the sliding bit. I kept sliding it back and pushing the sliding part in trying to get in to eject). So needless to say, it shows the screen saying it's updating and not to turn the car off. Once that finished, it went to the map and sure enough, I had version 7.1 installed! I can see the version number under the options, and then it seems to show new icons (at least I don't remember seeing these before) for parks, golf courses and shopping centers. So now the bad part. I can't enter a destination. All of the buttons to enter destination (by address, intersection, previous destination, marked point, etc...) are all "disabled". They look like they do when the car is moving. I can't even change the area of the US I'm in, that's all disabled as well. The only button that works is the "Next" button and I can enter a destination by map. It will route me if I do something close (although it takes way longer than before), but it won't find something far away. I tried using the voice commands to send me home, it says that home is not registered. I tried telling it to turn POI on, it says that POI is only visible when zoomed in more (despite the fact that I'm zoomed in all the way). I've tried taking the disk out and putting my old disk back in again, and it says that it can't read from the disk. I've tried pulling the fuse for the navigation unit, turning the car on, turning the car off, putting the fuse back in, then turning the car back on again. This resulting in large amounts of sweating as the unit was black except for climate controls for a few minutes. Then it came back to it's previously hobbled state. I thought maybe it needed more time running to update itself, so I left it running in the driveway for 45 minutes, not go. I've driven it around, and it knows where I am. A couple of times, I've turned it on, and some of the buttons suddenly are there (but never all of them). I've managed to confirm that all of my marked points are still there, I was even able to get it to take me home once. But the next morning I started it and that didn't work anymore. Help! Did I kill my baby?
  8. Thanks for the reply. I've seen a couple of different tips for the LS400, but I'm not sure how similar these are to the LS430. The installation from one model to another could be very different, or at least enough to make it not a DIY job.
  9. So I've got a 2001 LS430 with 76,000 miles on it; and it's just started spewing steering fluid (I go through a bottle a week). It is out of warranty. The dealership says it will cost $2,700+ to replace the rack. Has anyone here attempted this before? Any thoughts, tips, anything? I've replaced things on other cars like brakes (pads, disks, calipers, etc...), half shafts, alternators, etc... I guess your typical "shade tree mechanic". Remanufactured racks (some with lifetime warranties) are much cheaper, like $500 range.
  10. So I took it to the dealer and they said that there are 3 sensors on the back, and the one with the textured paint is a dummy sensor, hence why it doesn't look exactly like the others. The reverse sensor is bad, and it will cost $500 to replace it. I told them no thanks for now. It's $150 for the part they said, any idea how hard it is to replace? I'm not sure how to even get in there.
  11. So when I put the car in reverse, the display shows all red lines straight back behind the car and says "Check the condition of the sensor". It was a hot day out, so I ignored it for a number of hours. When it got cooler (75), it continued. So I looked in the manual, and made sure there was no ice or mud. I washed the sensors in the rear (they appear to be those 4 nickel sized circles on the bumper) and no go. I've searched Yahoo and this forum to no avail. The only post I found said to bring it to the dealer but my '01 is not under warranty by any means. Any thoughts anyone? When I looked at the sensors, three of them are shiney, and one appears to have a textured black paint on it. Is this normal? Do you have this on your car? I purchased the car used and it was like that when I got it and the sensors worked fine then.
