  1. yeah the noise was so krazy i actually thought sumthing inside the engine was messing up. i was scared like a mutha!! it was fixed though. the starter was pretty expensive i must say, much more than i've ever paid for one on a nonluxury car. i went ahead and got a new battery while i was at it.
  2. ok, i had the exact same problem and guess what happened!! i turned my car on this afternoon and the starter would not stop turning. it stayed on whether the car was on or off. it just didnt stop. i couldnt get the battery loosened up in time and my starter just burned out completely. smoke and everything!! i took it to a mechanic immediately to see if any other damage had been done. he said that most likely it was just the starter and my car needed a new battery. he said that a weak battery can tinker with a starter and make it do exactly what maddox's problem does. anywayz, he said i would have needed a new starter anyway since it was acting up and a new battery. i'd normally do this work myself but i need the car fixed asap so i just told him to fix it while i'm at work. anywayz, i hope this helps some of yall. fix it cuz trust me, its not a pretty sight havin ur starter burn up on ya!! good luck.
  3. well, i have a 96 es300 and i took the radio out by undoing the screws that u have in ur pic, plus taking out the air vent right over the stereo unit. i used a flat screw driver with a tshirt wrapped around the tip and carefully pryed out the vent. i found 2 screws on there that were holding the stereo unit in place. soon as i undid those the stereo just pulled out. i know its a different model lex but i hope this helps some.
  4. actually, i was told by the crutchfield tech help that that was the wire i should use. do you know which wire is from the stock amp? i hope i didnt use a power wire. how can i find out? if u know the color of the proper wire at the amp let me know so i can make the adjustment. thanks a lot.

  6. i have a 96 es300 and came across numerous things that made me waste time when i put in my 2 10's. i kept the stock stereo and when i took it out, i found out there were no plug ins for the amp. it turns out the stock stereo has an external amp under the passenger seat, towards the back. i had to splice sum of those wires on the amp to make it all work. don't even bother touching the stereo if its stock though. all wiring has to be done through the stock external amp. i have to find a new REM hook up though cuz every time i turn my car off the subs give a thump. as far as rattles, i dont have many. like lex's, the rattles seem to be in the area where the stock 6X9's are located. i'm going to see about putting sum of those rubber washers on there though and see if that works....one day. also, my tail lights seem to rattle a lil bit. i might put sum rubber washers there too. anywayz, running the wires wasnt that difficult. i pretty much followed the area along the door well where the plastic is and just lifted up the plastic strips. i ran the wire there and used a clothes hanger to pull it through the carpet under the seat. my power wire to the amp is hooked up directly to the battery. that was a serious !Removed! to run into the car. i couldnt get through the fire wall so i ran it through the front quarter panel and through the hole in the driver door well. i'm sure there's probably a better way but i couldnt figure it out. anywayz, let me know how you progress. hope this helps some.
  7. Just in case you dont know, the doors lock automatically even though a back door is opened too, not just the trunk. i tend to open the front door to prevent it from locking on me. this feature sux to be honest. i prefer having complete control of when the alarm arms and disarms.
  8. hey bb, do you have a pic of what the cluster looks like now? i've been considering putting in neon gauges but i'm not sure what it would look like.
  9. I actually had that problem on an old camry. i sprayed it from time to time but i also rode with the vents open. when one smokes in a car sometimes the smell goes through the ventilation and it just stinks up the whole system. it took a while but it eventually left. sorry i cant help with the air filter deal but i figured this might help you too.
  10. yeah i know i should normally wait about a day or two for good responses but sumtimes there are people online during the day. i still find this a great sight though. i used to use automotiveforums.com when i drove a honda but i find this sight better in that it concentrates on our lexuses....or is it lexi?
  11. okay, i'm finally done. turns out that all i had to do to put on the new belts was place them as best as possible and then turn the engine manually by using a ratchet on the engine pulley and presto, they just role right into place. i know what u belt replacing experts are saying, "DUUUUUH!!" but hey gimme a break its been years since i changed a belt. anywayz, i'd like to thank me for being the only one to help me on this forum. thank you, me...your welcome!! hopefully this forum will help anyone who's considering changing the alternator and power steering belts on their ES300 for the first time. thank you for your time ladies and gentlemen, this is rapidito signing off.
  12. ok, i figured it out. it turns out i had to jack the car up, take off the front passenger tire and take off a panel thats held on by 2 screws. it gave fairly easy access to the PS pulley. I saw an adjustment screw there, loosened it, and used a screwdriver to pry and move the PS thing-a-madingy. i was able to take the belt off easily but putting on the new one is a . i'm still in the process of making it happen. its cold, i'm tired, i've spent my whole day off at my house messin with this belt, found out my cv joint boot needs to be changed, and the pulley to my a/c condensor might have a bad bearing.... the stuff i have to deal with to save a buck.
  13. ok, i searched up and down this sight and couldnt find out how to actually do it. there are 2 belts of interest: the alternator belt, which i've managed to remove, and what i suspect is the power steering belt, which is located at the opposite end of the alternator belt. i figure since i'm changin the ALT belt i might as well change the PS belt so i dont have to take the ALT belt off in the near future. anywayz, to take off the PS belt, do i have to jack the car upor sumtin? in lookin at the PS from the top, i can see a bolt which looks like may regulate tension for the PS belt but i'm not sure cuz i cant seem to get in there enough to see what it actually does. any help will be appreciated. rapidito
  14. actually i have the stock stereo. i spliced the REM wire to the stock amp under the passenger seat. should i look for a remote wire behind the stereo itself? where else can i find a remote wire hookup?
  15. I hooked up two 10's and an amp in my '96 ES300. recently, every time i turn the radio off or shut the car off completely a hard bass thump comes out of the subs. i checked the main ground to the amp and it's connected directly to the chassis. what else could be causing this?
