  1. My car gave me the same code when the front oxygen sensors went bad. From what I learned here, when that happens they tell the car's computer the air/fuel mixture is too lean, when it is actually fine. That's probably why you are getting the code 25. I believe the car switches to the richest mixture it can then, which is what gives you much poorer fuel economy. If the oxygen sensors are what is causing your problem, they are a pretty easy and inexpensive fix if you are a do it yourself maintenance kind of person. I bought universal Denso oxygen sensors off eBay for $50 total, cut the connectors off of the old ones and soldered them onto the new ones. Following the instructions listed in the service manual and www.lexls.com, I installed them in about 1 hour. They work great and I saved about $200 buying the universal ones and installing them myself.
  2. 1400RPM sounds like a high idle even if it is cold. At what speed does your car idle at when it is fully warmed up? When was the last time the spark plugs in your car were changed? My car idled close to that speed when cold, and had a similar starting problem, before I changed them.
  3. Might have killed the oxygen sensors. Would probably be a good idea to take it to Auto Zone and have them pull the computer codes.
  4. I could use the window switch panels from the front and rear passenger side doors. What kind of stereo does your car have? I am also looking for the Nakamichi amplifier that is in the trunk, and possibly speakers also. Thanks, Thomas
  5. Owner's manual states you should leave it in "normal" mode for better fuel economy. I have left my car in "power" mode for a couple of days before, the only time I noticed faster acceleration is going onto the highway. It is a noticeble difference there, but not worth it in my opinion if it affects fuel economy. I did not notice much difference in acceleration during regular city driving.
  6. Hello, I have a 1992 LS400 which needs a new power steering pump, and possibly pressure hose. Does anyone know of a good, fairly inexpensive source where I can find a rebuilt pump/pressure hose? Also, are the instructions for changing the pump out best found in the factory service manual, or is there another place online where I might possibly look? Thanks for your help. Thomas
  7. Thanks for the response. I have been told by several local folks the only amp that is a compatible replacement is another Nakamichi one, although I thought I had seen a couple of people on the forum that had successfully installed an aftermarket unit. I am not in a big rush, as I still think the stereo sounds great, probably because I don't listen to much music that has a whole lot of noticeable bass. I would just like to know what to do if it starts to get progressively worse. Anyone out there who has successfully installed an aftermarket amplifier?
  8. Hello, I have a 1992 LS with Nakamichi audio system. It seems to me that I am having some kind of bass issue. Sounds normal to me when the bass knob is turned all the way up, but when it is in the middle-preset position it sounds like there is something wrong. I don't think it is getting any bass at all, actually, when it is in that position. I would think, that the type of sound I am getting with the knob turned all the way up, would be the sound I should be getting with it in the middle position. There is still sound coming out of the subwoofer, as when I get in the back seat I can hear it and feel it when I put my hand on top of it. My question is, what part do you think is bad, subwoofer, or the amplifier? Does anyone know of any aftermarket replacements that would work? I am not looking for "boom boom" kind of sound, just would like to make it sound like it is supposed to. Any responses would be much appreciated. Thank you, Thomas
  9. It is very important that you or anyone else does not cut your wiring harness behind the head unit. Instead you need to buy a connector with your LS's stereo connector on one end and bare wires on the other end to be hooked up to your new head unit. I know someone who had an inexperienced shop damage the harness in his 1994 LS, the replacement cost for it is around $2500 plus labor. Sorry I cannot help you with stereo install instructions, maybe you want to try lexls.com.
  10. My local Lexus dealer, Superior Lexus in Kansas City MO, says they use Quaker State Synthentic Blend oil when they do oil changes. I am not sure if that is true for all Lexus dealers. I have not been able to find that particular type of Quaker State oil at my local auto parts shop here in K.C., but I am probably just not looking hard enough. It might be a good idea to see what kind of oil was used by the previous owner, if you can, so you can continue to use that same kind. It is really pretty easy to do the oil/filter change on these cars if you have a little mechanical ability and some basic tools. You can save yourself a lot of money if you don't mind spending a short amount of time doing the work.
  11. Unless your drive motor is broken, why not just replace the mast? That's what I just did on my 1992 LS. It is much easier, and does not require any new wiring. Thomas
  12. I am not sure which hose is which. There is just crap all over the place around the pump. Probably a combination of me (and the previous owner) spilling trans fluid when filling. Never thought it would be important to clean it until now. I may just want to replace all the hoses. Could you tell me what the return hose looks like? Thanks for your help. Thomas
  13. Hello, I have a 1992 LS400 with 137000 miles. After a while trying to figure out, I have discovered that my car has the common dreaded power steering pump leak. I would like to try and fix this myself if I can. I do most all of the other maintenance on this car myself now. My question, is there a specific part of the pump that usually causes the leak? Is it one of the hoses, or does the whole pump need to be rebuilt/replaced? It seems like the leak is coming from fairly high up in the engine, I would think it is probably coming from one of the hoses as they and the area around them are very dirty. Has anyone else had similar issues and care to share their experiences? Thanks, Thomas
  14. Check your Trac Control fuse. I had the same problem and replacing that fixed the issue for me. Hope you figure it out. Thomas
  15. From what other people have said it sounds like you might have a catalytic converter problem. Someone else more knowledgeable than myself can probably confirm if that really is the case. Oxygen sensors are cheap enough that you may as well replace them, it could also be them causing the problem if you are running lean. I did both my main ones on my LS400 with universal Denso sensors purchased off eBay. Total cost was about $50 plus 2 hours of my time installing them. Greatly improved my car's performance and fuel economy. And the air-fuel ratio mixture is correct again. Hope you solve your problem. Thomas
  16. Jim, I am in the Kansas City area as well and would like to know where you took your car to have the body work done? I would probably like to have the front bumper on my 1992 LS re-painted at some point in time, and would like to know of a good body shop. I have seen work Eveland Brothers in Merriam has done for a couple of friends' cars, I could not even tell it ever happened! Is that where you took your car, or do you know of a better place? Thanks, Thomas
  17. When I was doing some research about the catalytic converters, a couple people said that could be a symptom of one (or both) of them being clogged up. Don't know much about them, maybe someone else here can confirm if that really is the problem.
  18. I am the new owner of a pearl white 1992 LS400. What type of oil did this car come with, and what should I be putting in it? I believe the previous owner just put regular Pennzoil in it, should I keep doing that or use synthetic/semi-synthetic? Thanks, Thomas
  19. Thanks, Steve, I think that link will be a great help. Absent some specific advice, I'll pick out a Toyota compatible OBD-II code reader and I should be able to figure out what ails my car. If you take your car to your local AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts store they can hook up their code reader and pull the code for you. Doesn't cost anything.
  20. Got it fixed after a while, thanks for the responses everyone.
  21. Hello, I have a 1992 LS with the common power seat back problem. The left side moves back and forth fine but the right side is stuck. I have taken the seat apart, actually removed it from the car completely. After looking at some other threads it looks like the black plastic rod between the gears on each side needs to be moved over to the right. It does not appear to move easily. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the seat working again? Thanks, Thomas
