  1. Hahaha I do most of my posting at work too :P Regards, Bryan
  2. And I already asked the dealer about installing customer-supplied used parts, and they are OK with that. Hopefully they are OK with aftermarket too (although there is less chance). Bryan
  3. They won't change your oil?! Do you mean they wont change your oil with oil that you supply, or they won't change your oil at all?? Regards, Bryan
  4. They are the exact same symptoms as when I had a dead cell in my battery. What's strange is that he has already replaced his battery a couple of times, which kind of rules out the battery being the problem . . . Regards, Bryan
  5. I already had the cap and rotor and plugs replaced . . . that is when the hesitation started :P Well, with regards to my gas, I only use Shell fuel, which I believe is supposed to be one of the better fuels. The rusty gas line is due to all of the friggen salt here in Canada :( Kind of unavoidable :( I should have had my car undercoated, and am now feeling the pain :( I am taking my car to a Lexus dealership today to see what they have to say. Hopefully it is minor. Thanks, Bryan
  6. You might find this helpful: Problems Thread Everyone lists the problems they have had and the cost to repair. It is one of the "pinned" topics (you will see the pinned topics at the very top of the thread list). You might also want to erad skperformance's FAQ in the pinned topics. He is one of the super-posters here, and seems to know the ES in and out :P skperformance's FAQ Regards, Bryan
  7. Do a search on the board for common ES problems. It would probably be handy to know these so that you can check them out specifically tonight. I know it has been discussed many times . . . Regards, Bryan
  8. Well, being a mechanic sure makes things convenient, eh? :P In your case, it should be a lot cheaper to maintain the car as you can do a lot of the stuff yourself. I could probably tackle a few things on my own, but prefer to have other people do the work. I am slowly learning . . . :P Where is the ES from? It would be preferable if it isn't from a climate like mine. that darn salt on these roads is causing me a lot of grief! Good luck with the ES! Bryan
  9. Hey Everyone, I am going to the Lexus Dealership for my first time in my 2.5 years of owning my '92 ES300. I was just wondering . . . does your dealer allow you to bring in aftermarket parts for them to install? Would it be insulting to even ask? Thanks, Bryan
  10. And, by the way, a friend of mine had a 1992 Toyota Camry (same car) that he drove to 440000kms (275000 miles) before he sold it for $1500 and bought another newer Camry B) Regards, Bryan
  11. You can probably find a used mirror already in the same colour as the car at the following website: Car-Part Website This website tracks the invetories of many scrap dealers across North America. Good luck! Bryan
  12. Also, another nice thing about the ES300 is that it is pretty cheap on insurance :) A deifnite bonus if you are a younger male like me :D Regards, Bryan
  13. Hey man, The engine in my '92 5-Speed ES300 has never failed me. It is all the other things that can go wrong (which is mainly wear and tear in my case). - brake pads - ebrake pads - rotors - a/c leak - exhaust leak - power steering pump leak (replace unit) - brake line leak - replace fuel filler neck (rusted off) - body rust Basically, my car's main problem right now is rust, especially on the lines underneith the car (brake and fuel and exhaust). This could be attriuted to the fact that I live in Canada where they put salt on the roads during the winter :( I also have some pretty bad body rust now . . . My car has 213000 kms (133000 miles) and I have been pleased with it overall. Don't expect a free ride though. . . even though it is a Toyota/Lexus, it will have problems too. The car you are looking at is newer, so it should have fewer problems (especially rust related) than mine. I am averaging about $1000US/yr on repairs. The price you can get it for is excellent!! I say go for it if you have it checked by a mechanic and it all turn out OK. The great thing about the ES300 is that many of the parts are interchangeable with the Toyota Camry :) Saves a lot of money . . . Good luck, and let us know how it goes! Bryan
  14. Hey tckcumming, There is another thread that discusses HVAC error codes: HVAC Error Codes Thread It looks like it is your Solar Sensor circuit that is giving an error. This doesn't necessarily mean that your solar sensor is bad, it just means that it is triggering the error code. I had the same error code "21" on my ES300 when my A/C was not blowing cold. I filled up the A/C with freon and the A/C blew cold and the error code went away. Good luck, Bryan
  15. There are A/C diagnostics built in to the climate control unit. Do a search and you should be able to find it. I think you press and hold the AUTO and RECIRC buttons while turing the key to ACC or something like that. Do a search and it will give you more details. Good luck! Bryan
  16. You might be better off just going to a wrecker and buying seats with the heating wires already in them. It would sure be a lot less hassel. I have seen these seats go quite cheap on Ebay. Check out the following website which tracks the inventories of scrap dealers all across North America: Car-Part Website Good luck! Bryan
  17. I have a '92 5-Speed ES, and I wouldn't really give it high marks in the "fun-to-drive" category. I don't think the car was designed for steller sporty performance and huge accelation in mind. It is mainly about the comfort, and with that in mind, I think they succeeded quite well :D Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say the ES is sluggish. It does have some pep. But if it is "sporty" you are after, then the GS may be more your vehicle. Now, if you classify "fun to drive" as a smooth, quiet, rattle-free experience, then the ES is really really fun! B) Regards, Bryan
  18. Maybe you should try taking it to a Lexus dealership and see what they say . . . having a dead battery all of the time is EXTREMELY frusterating! Are you currently going to an independent mechanic? Regards, Bryan
  19. The lower the speaker impedance, the higher the load it puts on the output stage of the amplifier therefore affecting the output volume. That's why I said it'll make the amplifier work harder to get up to the same volume and therefore cause the amplifier to "clip". Clipping means you're pushing the amplifier into the distortion range. ;) OK man, I'm not doubting your knowledge as you seem more educated on the subject than I am. I have been trying to learn all of this stuff over the last month or so. Anyways, I thought that the lower the impedance, the lower the load it puts on the output stage of the amplifier? For example, with my current amplifier, I get 350W RMS at 2ohms and only 175W RMS at 4ohms. Thus, increasing the impedance (i.e. load) on the amp to 4ohms from 2ohms halves the amount of power output. Have I been wrong about this the whole time, or am I just getting screwed up on a definition or something? Regards, Bryan
  20. No, I didn't change the speaker wires . . . I just hooked it up to the stock wires to see how it would sound. Maybe that is my problem? Bryan
  21. But the weird thing is that the factory speakers powered by my 26x4W RMS internal Alpine amp sound better than with the higher-power capable Sonys Weird . . . Bryan
  22. I think this is the other way around. If you put less resistance to the amp than qhat it is expecting, don't you increase volume? Hence why it is so important to have a 2 ohm load to a 2-4 ohm capable amplifier (to get maximum output from the amp). Regards, Bryan
  23. Personally, I could never leave something like my glovebox open. Little things like open cabinet doors and stuff bug me :P They msut be shut! :P I am weird, and a stickler for neatness and organization :P So, I guess I read the original post wrong. I guess I forgot that the parking lights are on when the headlights are on, so the glove box does indeed light up while driving at night . . . Regards, Bryan
  24. I wonder why Lexus would only have the light come on when the parking lights are on? Are they trying to discourage you from rummaging through your glove box while driving? Weird . . . Regards, Bryan
  25. Hey Lex, You sound like you are in the same situation as me (except that I swithced to an aftermarket Alpine Head Unit). If the door speaker is indeed 4ohms resistance, then I find it really strange that the Sony speakers performed so poorly. Also, the fact that the stock speaker is a woofer also compounds to this strangeness. (I did notice that the stock speaker had a LOT more bass output than the Sony). Really, the 2-way Sony speakers built for higher pitches should have been way better than the stock speakers using my aftermarket head unit My Alpine head unit has a built-in equalizer, and when setting it up I assumed that the front door speakers were to output treble. I thus set the a high-pass filter at 200Hz for the front speakers to force them to receive high-pitch signals. Maybe I should be lowering the signal to 120Hz or something (because they are woofers)? But then the signal will be too low for the tweeters, which runs off of the same line . . . Hmmm . . . Now I am in a situation :( I do know that my system sounds pretty good right now. I have the front and rear speakers pushing out all of the high pitches and all of the bass coming from the sub in the trunk. Well, I guess I'll just have to play with the settings again and see if I can improve the system some more :) Regards, Bryan
