  1. I have replaced my antenna 3 times due to stupid stuff like putting the garage door down to soon. I used a kit on e-bay for 20 bucks that installed easy and worked fine.
  2. Your swap is probably fine. I as able to by a set of 2006 SE wheels an tires with 15 miles on them. They were 18" and looked great. I put them on my 1997 SC400 and the car does not handle near as well as my original Toyo's did. The road noise is greater, the ride is stiffer and they catch every rut and groove in the pavement. I may be selling them and go back to original wheels and Toyo tires.
  3. I have had good luck with the replacment antenna on e-bay for about 20 bucks. I keep closing my garage door before the antenna is down. They sell a complete unit for 29.95 including motor. They are easy to install. The second and third time goes real fast.
  4. I have a 1997 SC400 and was running stock wheels with new Toyo tires. It ran real good. I had the opportunity to buy a set of new 2006 IS 18' wheels and tires for a very low price and they only had about 45 miles on them. They look really good but they do not handle as well as my stock set up. They seem to be noisier and are prone to wander in the hiway grooves. Also the ride is much firmer. The car feels more like sports car now but I really think it was bettter all around with the stock Toyo's. Before you spring for the big bucks for new wheels and tires be prepared for a much firmer and different ride.
  5. BY shims do you mean the spring clips that the sqaure ends of the pads fit into?
  6. I have 2 problems. 1. When changing rear brake pads I could not figure out how to get the little wishbone springs that snap onto the pads bsack on. I tried doing it before putting the pads in and I could not do it. With the pads compressed all the way I have to force the caliper back onto the rotor and I am sure it will drag. Is this normal. I had previously purchased a set of drilled rotors for a 1998 CS300 that I had for a short time. I was going to put them on my 1997 SC400 as they are the same size. The problem is the OEM rotors are about .200 thicker than the drilled ones and have webbing between the outer rotor surfaces. The drilled ones are solid. I checked the forum for brakes and every post made it seem like a piece of cake to change pads and rotors. By the way I am using OEM pads.
  7. I changed my truck shocks for $40 bucks on ebay. I used a dremel tool to remove the old bolt and ball from the old shocks and they worked great. Almost too much lift.
  8. Does anyone know if the brake rotors are the same size on a 1997 SC400 and a 1998 SC300. I bought slotted rotors for my 1998 SC300 and I sold the the car and bought a 1997 SC400 because I wanted a white car.
  9. I think there is a post on this. You have to take the front wheel off and the spalsh pan. Be carefull about dmaging sockets ect.
  10. You can get the motor on e-bay for about $30.00.
  11. I did not have vapor in my headlight but in my tailight did. I took the light off and found a crack in the housing I used the outlet of a small vacume cleaner that the exhaust was about 90 degrees. I set it up to blow through the light housing. It took about 8 hours but the lense cleared up. I sealed the crack with silicon and have not a problem since. The crack looked like someone had used a screwdiver to pry the light assembly out and cracked to housing.
  12. I could not find a decent SC300 or 400 in the Pacific Northwest. I bougt 2 on e-bay. One was a 1998 SC300 with 69 K in Dallas. i was so paranoid I flew down to look at it. It was a plumb color and everytime I saw a white one I wished I had not bought the plumb. I sold the car in Seattle form more than I paid for it including shipping. I bought a 1997 SC400 from Florida for 16,900 plus 1200 shipping. It had 70 K and complete service records. the car showed up in mint condition. There were no similar cars available in the Seattle area for under 22K. That was a year and a half ago. From what I get from the posts is that I may have paid too much but in this area ther are few SC's for sale. If you buy one from e-bay make sure the seller has a good feedback rating and definatly get a car fax report. I checked out the first one flying red eye to Dallas but took a chance on the one in Florida. If I had it to do over I would have held out for a 98 SC400. The extra HP and the transmision are better. Also a few other things like the visor garage remote were available on the 98. I still love my 97. I think you are better off buying a cherry car at a premium price than looking for a deal. Most SC's seem to be in Texas or Florida
  13. 1985 300ZX 275, 000 miles. Sold it to my son in law for !K. Have an 1997 SC400. Love it. Bought used with 70K no problems at 80 K.
  14. This may not be revalent but my son in laws Dodge ram V-8 had the same symptoms. 1000,000 miles. Catalitic converter was plugged. New converter ran perfect. Computer codes did not show this. Found it by removing O2 sensor and it ran better but not as it should. ← I meant 100,000 miles
  15. This may not be revalent but my son in laws Dodge ram V-8 had the same symptoms. 1000,000 miles. Catalitic converter was plugged. New converter ran perfect. Computer codes did not show this. Found it by removing O2 sensor and it ran better but not as it should.
  16. I had to use a dremel tool to remove the ball from the old lifts. I purchased the lifts from E-bay. The e-bay ones had a lot more power than stock.
  17. I have spent most of my life as a Marine Electritian and boat mechanic. I am an old !Removed! with years of experience in electrical trouble shooting. 99% of the problems are due to poor grounds. Make sure all ground connections are clean, tight and not covered in grease. Dont forget the connections. Any crimped connections can be suspect. If in doubt cut the wires back and recrimp the wires. Battery terminals are the most likely culprit. Also where the negitive cable connects to the frame or engine. Adding a grounding kit can do no harm. Be suspicious of any oily or frayed connectors. Do a voltage drop test with a cheap VOM. If all else fails take it to a reputable shop.
  18. I tried to research this subject a while ago and remember the exact instructions on this issue. I purchased my SC400 (92) a couple of months ago and the original transponder key had no battery in it. I purchased a spanking new battery, did the whole set up thing and it didn't work. I tried today to try it again and it didn't work again. I know that the alarm is working - a few days ago AAA guys unlocked my car and it went off... quite loud alarm... I stopped it by unlocking driver's door with the key. The battery in transponder seems to be fresh. The dealer said that they don't program transponders even ones that came with originally... smells like BS... Has anyone else experienced difficulties resetting their keys? How did you resolve it? ← I have a 1997 SC400. I bought a remote on e-bay from some place in NY. The instructions tto program were similar to the above except it said to turn the key on and off once when inserted the first time. I tried it once with the above instructions and it did not work. I tried it again with the change noted above and it worked. The remote cost me $42.00. on e-bay. The next day tanother one came up and it sold for $25.00. There appears to be several solutions for key problems on e-bay. Buy the way I have purchased 2 SC400 on e-bay along with numerous parts ans have been satisfied with all purchases.
  19. I ordered a kit on e-bay for $19.95 plus 19,95 shipping ( I thuoght that was excessive). I ordered it to us on my SC400 even though the kit was listed for a SC300. The kit does not fit the SC400 because the battery post adapter is too hign and interferes with the hood. I had to mount it on the frame. I noticed better cranking speed but I have not driven the car yet. The previous post is correct. Go to a stereo store and have them make up wires. Pre measure for a neater install. I would go to a marine store to get a grounding buss to terminate the cables and then run 1 cable to the neg battery terminal. The kit I ordered had seven wires. They suggested intake manifold, cylinder head, engine block, transmision and headlights. The cables were not long enough to reach the alternator or transmision and I could not figure how to connect a cable to the headlights. I spent $40 for the kit and could have done the same for $15. I have been a Marine engine mechanic and have found that 90% of all electrical problems can be caused by poor grounding.
  20. Just for comparison last November I purchased a tan SC400 wit 69K. One owner. all service records. Immaculate car. I paid 18K for it including shipping. I could not find one in our area for under 24K exept one that flunked carfax as a total. By the way it needed new tires, another grand. I would say your price price is in the ballpark.
  21. Thanks Those pictures really help. It sure saves a lot of time when you know what you have to do to work on these SC400.
  22. I would apprecite pictures. I stared at mine for about an hour and could not see how to do it without removing splash pans.
  23. I ordered a replacement antenna on e---bay for $25.00 delivered. My old plastic antenna end busted inside the antenna. I had to remove the motor and take it apart and put in the new part. It worked perfect and it took about one hour. If your old antenna is not broken you can change it about 15 minutes
  24. What is a BG treatment. I have always flushed and adde amsoil in my oyher cars. I have never heard of keeping old fluid.
