  1. Not "bad ground" as in rough road terrain. Check the grounding strap on the battery terminal. It could be corroded or loose at the battery or at the connection to the engine block. While you are there, check the positive terminal as well. It is not likely this is the fix because the alternator supplies enough voltage while the car is running. If Kragen Auto Parts, or one of the affiliates, is in your area then you can have them check the battery and the alternator for free - as long as the parts are out of the car. To have both components go out at the same time along with all of their warning lights is a very low probability. Might as well plan to take it to a good mechanic or to a Lexus dealership if you are rich.

  3. Try checking the battery connections first. Sometimes a bad ground will cause such things. After that it will likely have to be taken in for service if there are no error codes popping up. Today's electronics are unsolvable by an untrained DIY mechanic.
  4. This issue has nothing to do with hybrids but rather slow drivers in "go fast" lanes. The same criticism could be made for a '52 Chevy pick-up carrying a passenger that pokes along. Even in non-carpool areas there are slow drivers in the fast lane that seem oblivious to the cars streaking by on the right. Using a phone in the car contributes to the problem from my observations. C&D's point is to get out of the left lane unless you are willing to do left lane speeds. Most hybrid drivers are concerned about the environment, their gas mileage, and keeping the planet green. The rub comes when they impose that viewpoint on others by going slowly in the carpool lane. There are probably even a few of those drivers that think they are contributing to saving the world by slowing everyone down on purpose. There is quite a bit of difference in that view than the idiot who clunks along in an old car, or any car, just because a passenger is present. Hybrid drivers are welcome in the fast (commuter) lane as is anyone else willing to "go with the flow" rather than impede the flow. Perhaps C&D has observed that a greater percentage of hybrid drivers are more cautious than the general driving public. As those of us who drive the commuter lanes are aware it only takes one slow driver to gum up the works. If that driver happens to be in a hybrid then "profiling" comes into play and all hybrid owners are painted with the same brush.

  7. I don't drive much at night but recently drove a very dark, undulating, and curvy road in the rain at freeway speed. It seems that the sharp cut-off at the top of the headlight's low beam limits the view of the road severely. Upcoming turns cannot be seen and when going down into a dip the road ahead is not illuminated at all. Oncoming drivers must love it but it is disconcerting on an unfamiliar road. Has anyone replaced the OEM lights with something that has a bit more forgiving top edge? If so, what was used? If you have a brand name and/or part number it would be helpful. The high beams are fine and seem to light up the road for miles. Thanks.
  8. Last week, while blazing across western Washington state, a sneaky speed trap was run into. The road was long, straight, lightly traveled, and fairly flat. The officer was parked behind an overpass hill in the center median pointed my direction. Yes, my speed was probably somewhere between 90 and 100 mph as is my habit on an open, clear road and is the reason a radar detector is used. Anyway, the radar was blocked by the overpass hill and the signal was picked up late. The brakes were slammed on and then the signal hit fully and the detector was screaming. The officer looked right at me from his car and started to pursue. Of course then I went the 70 mph speed limit but he pulled me over. My crime was going 64 mph! He tried to get me to admit that my speed was much faster but playing dumb put him off that track. My speed was never actually checked by me but giving a number would have allowed him to write a ticket for 5 or 10 mph under and then claim that I made an admission of speeding. Then he started in about giving me a ticket because of a "sound" and he knew that I had a radar detector so speeding must have been an issue since nobody goes 64 mph on that stretch of road. Radar detectors must put off a small signal of some kind that can be picked up by the police. Does anyone know some facts about this? The bottom line was that he let me go but his frustration showed as he asked me, "What will it take to get you to slow down?". I told him that I was getting off the freeway in a few miles and that it is hard to go fast on side roads. My wife was aghast at this answer. He just shook his head, gave me back my license and registration, went back to his car, and drove off. I've never been a liar and wasn't about to start to save my rear end. Thanks for "listening". BTW, the 111 mph speed limiter on the RX350 works just fine. :(
  9. Try the WIX filter website. Remember that NAPA filters are WIX filters without the first number so any NAPA dealer should be able to get the filter you are looking for. They have the oil, air, and cabin filters for an 08 RX350 so they should have one for your RX400h. http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp NAPA is having a 25% off sale this weekend so now is the time.
  10. First, check the manual. Then see if an orange light showing a tire cross section with an exclamation point inside it shows up on the instrument panel when starting the car. On an RX350 it is next to the gas gauge. It goes out after about two seconds. If all else fails then deflate a tire to 20 pounds or so and see if something shows up on the dash. Don't forget to fill the tire back up - duh.

  12. Just returned from a 3500 mile trip with the bra. The results were not so great. At 80+ mph the bra starts to flap and at 100+ the Bernoulli effect lifts it off of the hood about 6 inches. It resembles a "stuffed" bra. It starts out as a 28A and ends up a 42DD.:whistles: I will try punching some holes with grommets in the "T" section that fits under the top of the hood and use some heavy duty bungee cords to try to keep the bra tight and down on the hood. It is doubtful that the modification will work but it will be better than trying nothing. If anyone is thinking of a Colgan bra, it might be best to get the style that has the "bug deflectors". They are actually wind deflectors that hold the bra down at higher speeds. BTW, the RX350 engine does cut out at 111 mph as stated in the manual. The speed was verified by a Garmin 2720 GPS as well as the speedometer. All three (engine/manual, GPS, speedometer) matched perfectly. The best gas mileage during the trip was two days in Yellowstone National Park at park's 45 mph speed limit or less. The RX 's display showed 26.9 mpg and the gas fill-up calculated 27.1 - well within error range and almost as good as a hybrid. There is probably a lesson to be learned here but it will be ignored.
  13. I am about to do my first DIY oil change on a 2008 RX350. The wrench that I plan to use is the chain/link style that fits around the filter housing and is adjustable for size according to what link is secured. There are also wrenches with plastic straps that are infinitely adjustable. The fly in the ointment is going to be whether or not there is enough room to fit the chain around the filter housing and then enough clearance for the handle to rotate. It will only need to go an inch or so at a time. I'll report back when it is tried.
  14. The tire light is in the instrument cluster near the bottom. It is amber and looks like a flat tire if I remember correctly. The owner's manual should show you all of the lights and their locations. It also appears when the car is started. Look next to the gas gauge.

  17. OK, finally took the two seconds it takes to figure out resetting the average mpg. Technique: 1. Let the fuel get low. 2. Get fuel. 3. Watch the average mpg setting go to 0.0 after about 50 yards of driving. :P
  18. My tire pressure light goes on at 30 psi. It doesn't matter if all the tires are the same pressure, one at the threshold will set it off. It resets when the psi in all of the tires is over the sensor setting. Try pumping up all of the tires to 34 psi, or higher if necessary, and then bleed one down until the light goes on. That will tell you what sensor setting will trip the warning light. You might even try it on all four tires to see if one sensor is malfunctioning. Then it is a replacement issue. Since you have a 2007 RX it should be under warranty.

  20. Check out Consumers' Reports SUV ratings. Then drive them all - no cheating. We did and the 2008 RX350 had it over everything else in just about every category (Acura MDX, Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX9, even the Porsche Cayenne, and more of course). I made an Excel spreadsheet of all of the attributes that we cared about and the RX wiped out the competition. If you are at all concerned about styling, the RX is "subtly elegant" according to my wife.

However, the poster's statement of it taking an hour for the whole process may be a bit of an underestimate.

  23. The lights are LED instead of standard 12V so the backup alarm would have to be specifically designed and wired for that type of circuit. There are also electrical converters for standard trailer lights so maybe something like that could be used. The Lexus/Toyota part number is in a post about trailer hitches on this site. Calling a Lexus dealer with the question would probably confuse them but it is worth a try.
  24. To put it in perspective - what if the shoe was on the other foot. Like if you paid $4000 too much. Would you want your $4000 back from the dealer?
