  1. sc300newbe, Thanks for the advice. So by removing the system altogether this will actually IMPROVE gas mileage?? I thought it was there to improve it to begin with. BTW, I drive a 1992 and I could care less about emissions. I think Kyoto is a piece of garbage. And to that note, I recycle anyways and walk when I can so any tree-huggers out there can take a hike. Just curious, how much do these kits typically cost?
  2. For all the veterans on the forum here, my apologies if it seems like I'm just asking without looking for the answer myself. I tried searching numerous times this afternoon and for some reason, the search parameters won't allow a term like "EGR" to be searched. Had the check engine light on for some time. Finally took it to the stealership to get this diagnosed. They mentioned error code 70 (I think...please correct me if I'm wrong) and that my EGR sensors need replacing. BTW, does anybody have a code list they can email or post? Thnx. So I ask the parts tech what this thing is for and get some ignorant rhetoric about "It helps your engine..." no lie. (How is this helpful service??!!) Read up on it online and found the EGR system recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine to improve fuel efficiency? (View at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas_recirculation). They charge damn near $500 for one sensor (I'm to the understanding that there are two?), just the part, not even installed. My questions are: 1) Is this critical to proper engine function and will my car do something horribly wrong that will cost a lot of money if I don't fix it? (I've driven it for close to a year like this now, no problem. Scold me if I'm being a fool...) 2) I heard somewhere you can get aftermarket replacements that are far cheaper than the OEM unit. Is this wise? What's a reputable source? 3) When replacing the one, should I do both at the same time? Thanks for your help!
  3. I'm not trying to be Dr. Phil or anything, but I agree with JH - you have to figure out if this car is for you. I had looked at getting my sc3 for a while before I decided to buy it - fully knowing that although Lexus is top quality, it's also damn expensive to fix even if you DIY. Because I'm from Canada and they're a lot rarer up here than in the US, I paid a bit more than what most people south of the border pay for theirs (I'd JUMP at the chance to pay less than $4000 for a newer sc3. I paid just over $11,000 US for my '91...that's right, a '91). But I love the look, the performance, and the potential. And to me, fixing up issues is totally worth it as it's the car I've wanted for a couple years now. Honestly though, what do you expect to get paying $3200 for luxury a car that, brand new in the early 90's was tens of thousands more brand new? And by the sounds of it, a good portion of your issues are cosmetic. I'd say just deal with it if you really like the car. If these issues really upset you that much then make it a priority or sell the car to someone else who can truly appreciate it, especially if it is your second car. But I'd say you'll certainly not regret spending the time and money to fix your ride up. It's more than worth it.
  4. UPDATE: Have not had a problem since I took the car to my independent mechanic (last time I took it to a dealership, they charged me close to $500 just to flip a switch I never knew about in the glove box which activated the trunk release which I thought was broke. Stupid dealerships...) Anyways, Regarding this post here... That's exactly what happened. My mechanic couldn't find any problems when he had the car as it never acted up around him (typical luck). So I took it home myself and after buying a fresh battery and installing it, that solved a lot of the issues. Also, my Nakamichi 12 disc changer was giving me hell and never worked so after removing the unit completely, I have since found that the alarm doesn't go off anymore. It's only done it once since and that's because I accidentally flipped the hood release and then came out of the gas station 10 minutes later to open it and it thought I was breaking into the car. However, between the battery switch and removing my CD player (I don't know if it would have anything to do with it) I haven't had any more problems. I did read somewhere on another forum that removing a disfunctional Nakamichi unit will aleviate certain electrical nuisances. I'm not an expert - maybe someone else with experience can expound on the subject but I think that's what fixed it.
  5. Are the headlights uncracked/still intact? if so, how much are you looking at to part with them (and ship to zip T5T4J5 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)? Thanks!
  6. Just bought a '92 sc300 last year. Has really given me no problems and drives smoothly and wonderfully. I drive it quite a bit as I'm a realtor, so I understand I'm going to encounter problems sooner than most people who don't drive as much. Recently, the alarm has been going off for no reason, unless the car is left unlocked. This becomes quite an annoyance when picking up groceries or leaving the car for an extended period of time (let alone while showing homes to clients). But the worst happened just this evening - After driving back to my place and turning the car off, the lights illuminating all the gauges stayed on, would not shut off, and basically every accessory in the car would function if I turned them on, yet the key WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE IGNITION. Does anybody know what kind of effing problem(s) this may be? I need to get this stuff fixed by mid-week otherwise there's no hope in hell I'll be making money and selling houses. I can be reached at justin@edmonton-real-estate-online.com Thanks for all your replies/posts!
