  1. I had a leaking a/c. Did you get that part of this problem fixed?
  2. I need a right front ball joint. Is this a repair that's worth doing myself? my quote is $248 + tax. what kind of special equipment would I need to do this? What would the replacement parts cost? How long can I wait on this repair... I only put 5k miles on the car per year, and the play in the wheel is not excessive at this point. thanks!
  3. The gasket between the engine and transmission is leaking (slowly). I was given an estimate of $686 to replace this (from a Lexus repair shop that does work on out-of-warranty Lexii). They said the repair requires the removal of the engine. Is this true??? If so, should I view this as an opportunity to replace my motor mounts? (the car has 101k miles). How long should I wait to do this repair? I only put 5000 miles on this car since I bought it a year ago, and will likely put the same number of miles on it this year.
  4. Can this operation be used for the process of replacing a fuel pump? it's located in the gas tank, is it not?
  5. Yes, please post your findings here. I am eager to fix my trunk as well. thanks!
  6. Is this the best plug to get for a change? they are two electrode (and seem to be) platinum. Should I go with Bosch? NGK? Isn't $10/plug a bit much? who has them cheaper than lexuspartsonline.com? thanks!
  7. I'm not sure. I am a total newbie on this subject. What is "OBII"? What about the ability to troubleshoot down to the spark plug level? Can this be done? thanks!
  8. LexusPartsOnline has one for $299.95. I have a bunch of questions: Is this the thing I need to generate the codes I've seen mentioned here? Will my 1999 GS300 have the appropriate connection port to support this item? Is this what I should expect to pay for one? Does someone sell a comparable one at a better price? How finely can this thing troubleshoot (e.g., will it be able to tell me that a particular spark plug needs to be changed, or that the starter / thermostat / water temp sensor / oxygen sensor etc. is about to fail)? In other words, are there parts it cannot get data on/from? thanks!
  9. Same thing that happened to my driver seat...I think that the switch. Is this an easy do-it-yourself fix? can parts be found on eBay?
  10. My stepson's 1994 ES300 cannot be opened at the driver's door with the key (he only has a valet key). He has to unlock the passenger door, then reach over the passenger seat from the inside and open the driver's door manually and then get out and walk around to the driver's door to get into it. Is this the same problem you are having? If so, does this clarify the problem for anyone out there that might chime in with a solution? thanks!
  11. Be sure to take it to a good mechanic and have the following checked: motor mounts, CV joints, timing belt, brake line integrity, of course brakes and make sure that you don't just get a single key (especially if it's the valet key and no remote keys).
  12. Recently, the control that lets me move the seat closer to or farther away from the steering wheel would stick and the seat would keep moving in that direction until you forced the handle the opposite way. It was also at this same time that the seat would not move at all during the push of one of the saved settings buttons (1 or 2). When the forward/backward seat control resumed working properly (i.e., no longer sticking), the seat adjust function again resumed being part of the overall routine saved in the saved settings buttons. What component is getting ready to fail? thanks!
  13. My wife had trouble starting the GS300 the other day, a very cold day here in Dallas. It took her about 5 attempts. The engine was making a turning-over sound, but it would not start. Since then, there has been no problem starting it. What impending problem does this indicate?
  14. This problem is only getting worse now. In addition to the driver's floorboard getting wet from this, the rear passenger-side floorboard is now getting wet (not the one behind the driver though). I saw lots of water dripping under the car the other day from area under the center of the interior, probably right below the AC vents for the rear passengers. Does this help shed new light on what the real problem might be for anyone reading this?
  15. Did you mean Flatbush Ave.? Too bad he's not here in Dallas! what a great value both for the car and for the work... what part of Jersey are you in? I used to live in Eatontown in the mid-1970's. We were within driving distance of NYC and went there often (I have tons of relatives in Brooklyn). We had that nice black-tarred driveway there - in Dallas they don't do that - car would get stuck on the melted tar in the summer!
  16. Total bill for the repairs? done at the Lexus body shop or an independent one?
  17. I had only a temporary victory with this repair. I poked a wire into the hose and the condensate resumed falling on the driveway for a short time. Then it stopped again. I removed the hose and poked around some more (gently) with a screwdriver tip, then (with difficulty) put the hose back on (all the way, like it originally was) and have had no condensate dripping from it since. The water still collects under the driver's floor mat. Would there be any benefit in blasting compressed air into the hose? Or, shall I purchase a fleet !Removed! and squeeze it up this hose, hoping to loosen the debris? I cannot envision what the inside of this drain area must look like and how big or small the constipation is. Am I at the point where I have to let a qualified technician fix this? I am driving without the floor mat (but with a towel on the floorboard to soak the excess water up). This is really annoying... I had posted the same problem as few weeks back on this site. I am glad you are getting some answers. Turns out I know a tech. that works at the Lexus dealership by my house. The rubber drain hose attaches on the passenger side under the carpet at the very top, by the back of the glove box. There is the rubber hose that comes through the firewall and attaches to a plastic tube that come from the condenser. Simply pull it apart and clean the rubber hose out. My hose was completely clear by the way. So if yours is too the next bit of information will make you very upset. The problem is the seal on the condenser drain is bad, not the part the seal. This really bites because you have to take the whole dash out to reseal the drain. My friend told me he would do it at his house but it would take him all day! I will keep you posted on whatever solution I reach because I am tempted to do it myself. I am wondering... if the seal on the condenser drain is bad, why would I have had a brief success in getting it to drip properly after the first time I attempted to clean it out? It stopped soon thereafter, but the fact that it was draining at all could mean that it might just be a stubborn clog?
  18. this sounds like something worth trying... thanks! I wonder what would happen if I inserted a high pressure wand in the end of the drip hose and blasted water in, !Removed!-style?
  19. The pictures show a fine looking car - not too much in the way of body damage that I can see (the fourth picture would not load, so maybe it shows more). What a steal! I am thinking that lots of similar deals may be in the works as the foreclosure tide sweeps the nation... Just curious - how was the car advertised (or was it someone you knew)?
  20. My car came with receipts that show the timing belt was replaced early (at 61k miles). The service receipt does not mention a water pump being replaced (a Toyota dealer did the work). As the water pump is out to the side, it seems that on this straight-6 engine, it would be relatively easy to replace it separately. Do you think this was why it wasn't replaced? Does anyone think that it should be able to last until I need to replace the timing belt again (I assume at around 140k miles)?? thanks!
  21. I also wonder the same... the flip side of the trunk not opening on its own is that it seems to close like dead weight falling. Is this normal behavior, or are the springs in the hinges weak/worn out?
  22. Be nice toys!!!!!! This attitude will get you nowhere! :chairshot: So how would downloading WinZip benefit me, a MACINTOSH user? Why does everyone always assume the user has a Windows box? BTW, I shouldn't have any problem opening the files as the Mac OS has .zip decompression built in. thanks.
  23. My 1999 has the usual LCD display problems. There's a Craigslist seller near me with a Nakamichi system from the same body style era GS as mine; can I pull out the standard cassette player/tuner/CD controller module from the center of the dash and replace it with the Nakamichi without any issues (i.e., leaving the standard speakers and amp)? will it connect right up with the existing components? thanks!
  24. The GS300 I bought a few months ago was missing its valet key. I know Lexus would be ready to rape me good if I was missing the remote keys instead; so in theory cutting a valet key should be no big deal. Can someone confirm this? Are there other sources for the cutting of such a key than the dealer? Would the remote key serve as the master for this process, or would they need to use a lock or some special code? thanks!
