  1. Hey guys, I'm needing to replace my ECM but I remembering seeing to get within a certain serial # for a revised ECM. Did a bunch of searching but cant find nada, but I know it's here somewhere! Numbers are something like "89661-50303 through 89661-63733" is the one to get. Anybody on this one?
  2. Hey guys! I've searched for a while and still cant find a procedure to drain the gas tank on my 1996 LS400. Car sat for about 10 months and is smoking horribly, running super rich and check engine light flashing. Before I start throwing parts that I cant afford at it, I wanted to eliminate the possibility of condensation in the tank. Any help is super duper appreciated!!!!
  3. Condensation in my tank was my first thought. In addition to the 10 gallons of fresh gas I put a bottle of some water absorber stuff in but doubt it did anything. Looks like I might want to see about draining my tank. I've been searching for a while and havent found anything on the procedure.
  4. Funny you said that, I thought about that as well. I went out to check them only to find that there are some covers half way up in the way and then ran out of daylight. Guess I'll snoop around here to see what it takes to get to the distributor caps.
  5. Hey guys, need some help if you can! My poor '96 LS400 is running horrible. It sat for about 10 months while I was away. The gas was pretty much empty when I left. I added 10 gallons of Supreme and started her up. There is white smoke coming out of the exhaust (see video) and a very bad smell of fuel from the exhaust. Autozone Scanner gave these codes: p0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire p0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire P0396 Cylinder 6 Misfire I drove it again around the block and it started smoking worse and it gave me the same codes above plus 2 new codes 4 & 8 Cylinder misfire. It's running rough obviously and check engine light is blinking. Kind of weird that after driving it a second time it said 4 and 8 now misfiring. Could it be bad gas even though it was just about empty then I added 10 fresh gallons? I havent pulled the plugs yet, it got dark but will inspect and replace all plugs tomorrow. ANY help or suggestions are GREATLY appreciated! VIDEO OF SMOKING:
  6. I'd like to relocate my HVAC for a project and would like to tap into he HVACs wiring harness. Anybody got a diagram or schematic?
  7. Bradenton is too far North for my referal down here in Miami. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
  8. Yeah, LexLS.com is a great source! I wouldn't recommend having someone flush your transmission at that age. There is a great DIY procedure at LexLS.com: http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/transmission/transflush.html They title says flush but it's not a pressurized machine flush and would be much safer on your tranny. Just make sure to use Toyota T-IV ATF fluid only, available at your local Lexus or Toyota dealership.
  9. Well I'm sure they're almost all true! Oh and crazywakerboarder, don't feel bad I did the same thing trying to find my amp the first time, I even tore out my back seats!
  10. That's true, otherwise he'll be all cramped up, upside down and feet danglin outside. I think we've all been in that position one time or another (I mean working on our cars)!
  11. Blake beat me to the post! See we all try to help around here! You're seat does not need to removed, just moved all the forward and all the way up. If you look under the passenger seat from the back seat you'll see an a/c ducts system. 1. Remove the 2 blanks from the a/c duct system with a flathead screwdriver 2. Remove the 2 screws where the blanks were 3. Remove the duct itself 4. There's you're amp
  12. Gotta agree with NC211 on this one. Many people have used the Hunter system after failed attempts with other systems on their LS's with great success. Most companies will also offer a 3 year or up to lifetime warranty for a couple bucks more. Make sure you get the 4 wheel alignment and printed report after completion. And don't forget balance is just as important as alignment. Haven't used them personally, but their on the Beach and have the Hunter system: MARTINO TIRE CO 1850 ALTON RD MIAMI BEACH, FL 33139 Phone: 305-532-4807 Good luck and let us know how your issues turn out.
  13. The 95-96's had problems with some of the ECM's that have caused probs like your describing. They had a recall at one time, but that's long gone by now I'm sure. On the ECM itself there is a part number. The problematic one is p/n 89661-50302. The upgraded fix p/n is 89661-50303. Check your original and replacement and see what you've got. Who knows maybe you got one of the bum ECM's when you ordered the replacement. When under warranty, they replaced the ECM, Cruise Control Computer and Plugs.
  14. I think all the documented maintenance is a huge plus for potential buyers. I was shocked to only see about 5 maintenance reports from the dealer when I had them look up my 96 before I bought it back in February of this year. There wasn't even anything major done which made me very uncomfortable about buying it. I had the dealer do a full inspection before I bought it, came back with only a few common minor probs which have since been addressed. I almost didn't buy it due to lack of documented service. Lots of luck with the sale and your new car purchase, but don't get lost!
  15. Not sure about what suspension you have, but shock selections depend on what ride quality you're ultimately looking for. If you're looking to keep the Lexus plushy ride here is the order: 1. OEM 2. KYB 3. Billstein If you're looking for performance, here is the order: 1. Billstein 2. KYB 3. OEM Shocks may not be the only contributor to a rougher ride. There are other suspension related parts to consider. A good search on this forum will yield a wealth of information.
  16. Seeing the temp sensor has already been replaced, I'm with everybody else on the thermostat, don't forget the t-stat gasket and go OEM for sure.
  17. Not sure if I remember correctly, but.... 1. Put your key in the ON position (with engine off). 2. Press and hold the AC "OFF" button for 4 seconds.
  18. Don't worry a lot of the people that do these procedures have never done much maintenance if any before either. The LexLS site makes it real easy with great write-ups and pictures. All the ones mentioned are pretty simple and straight forward. Oh yeah, Good Luck!
  19. Well I guess a picture IS worth a thousand words and quieted down the debate to change or not.
  20. Good job on properly maintaing your LS! That's pretty much the big one on these cars. I find it strange they didn't mention the caps/rotors. There is a great DIY site that you might want to look at called LexLS.com, that will show you how to do some common maintenance yourself and save some $$$. Some things I would have on your list to do yourself: 1. flush power steering (good preventive maintenance) http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/steering/psflush.html 2. clean your solenoid screen (part of the P/S service) ---> do a search 3. flush brake system (brake fluid breaks down over time) http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/brake/bleeding.html 4. clean your throttle body http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/EFI/throttlebody.html
  21. I downloaded it on my Mac with no problems. There are tons of PDF's!
