  1. Seller traded it in this weekend...so, this one's gone. Thanks for all of the advice. This forum is a gold mine!
  2. He has no receipts for any of the work. He told me that he has done the oil changes every 5k, changed the a/c filter and replaced the brake pads. The tires are original, he said that they were Michelins and would get about 75K on them. He mentioned that he used torque wrench to tighten lug nuts back on (after changing the brakes) and has always done the maintenance on his Lexus cars. He said that the dealers made too much $$$ on the maintenance. The lack of maint records is the main drawback I have against the car. The car has 52K miles on it, a clean carfax, and he is willing to come down to $17,500 at this point. He has it listed at 18,500. He said that the dealers only offer him so much for trading in. Since he is buying a new ES, he felt that he could do better by selling it himself.
  3. Ok, here's where I am at this point on the 01 RX 300 1.) I test drove the car and liked what I saw. It is a one-owner, garaged, all maintenance done at dealer. 2.) After my test drive, the seller agreed to let me pay for a used car inspection at the local lexus dealer. The inspection noted that the vehicle will be needing new brakes soon, the front and back were at about 3mm. Also, the owner did not get the full 60k service done..only part of it. The fluids still need to be changd and some of the belts are getting close. 3.) The antenna needs to be replaced (not motor, just assembly)...thanks to a recent car wash by the owner. 4.) The front tires are ok for now, the back will need to be replaced soon. My question is this.... I can buy from the seller for $16,500...knowing that I have to get the vehicle up to par on the items mentioned above. IS THIS A GOOD DEAL OR NOT? Everything else checked out at the dealer. Thanks!
  4. 2002 ES 300. The seller has "supposedly" done all of the maintenance work himself. The car is at 52K miles. Would anyone here recommend getting the $99 used car inspection performed on this at the Lexus dealership? Do you think that they would be biased? The prospect of saving a couple of thousand buying from an individual is so tempting! I would however prefer the maintenance history. Any and all thoughts are welcome. BTW, the carfax is clean.
  5. After my inspection of the vehicle, I noticed that I will be needing new tires right away. I have seen a few postings regarding tires and thought I would see if anyone has used the Toyo Open Country H/T tires? I talked with a tires salesman at a local tire shop and he mentioned that he has had good luck with them so far and no customers have returned them. I also asked him about the Bridgestone Alenza tires and he said that they were good as well, just a bit more expensive. If the Toyo tires are just as good, I would rather get them since they are less expensive. Has anyone had experience with either of them?
  6. tmastres and others, Thanks so much for the feedback. Just curious, how much should I expect to spend to get the trans fluid changed at a Lexus service center? Would you recommed that this be completed every 15K miles? Thanks!
  7. I failed to mention that I did run a carfax and it was a clean report. The vehicle was purchased at a local dealer and that is where they traded it in for a new 07 ES.
  8. Hi, I'm considering purchasing a 1999 ES 300 (coach edition). The car is in excellent shape interior and exterior, however, I'm a little curious as to what I should be looking for before I purchase? The car is located at a local dealer, they are asking 12,500. The car has around 77K miles, the original brakes are at 30% on the front and 35% on the back. The tires are at 5/32 wear (about 80% tread left). It is a one-owner vehicle, nearly all of the service has been at the local dealer. There are a few oil changes that were done at non-dealer locations. The only thing that I know to be nervous about is the oil sludge/gelling issue that I have read about on this forum. If I take it to a local mechanic before purchase, what should I have them look for? Any and all comments are appreciated! Thanks so much. Chris
  9. Hi, I am looking at a 2001 RX 300 with 69,000 miles that is being listed at 17K. It is white and loaded (minus spoiler). All maintenance has been performed at local Lexus dealer and the oil changed every 4,500-5000 miles. It is also a one-owner that has been garaged. Does anyone here think that this is a good deal? The tires have about 10k more miles and the breaks were done at about 40K miles. This would be my first Lexus purchase and my first used car purchase. Any input, comments, etc would be very appreciated. Thanks, cswatson98
