  1. No roos in the U.S. but plenty of deer. I know several guys who have hit deer with their ARB bull/roo bars. No damage to rig nor bar -- some deer have exploded on impact.

Good point! All those guys are over on ih8mud tho, right? Too bad this site doesn't get more posts. ;)

  2. Your better off with the OEM part.

I've never done the swap, but I have the FSM and read the instructions just prior to reading your post (and I don't have the FSM's here at my office). The FSM only lists about 5 steps, so it seems that it would be a simple job. It is not an auto tension system and I think you need some sort of tool that will gauge the tension on the belt (something about tension between A and B, or ???). Wish I could be more helpful.

I hate to say this but this Forum is not the best place for mechanical advice. You might want to try www.ih8mud.com. There's a forum dedicated to the UZJ100 (or 100 series) Land Cruisers, which is what our LX470's are. I've got some great advice and learned a hell of a lot about my 100's ('98LX470 and '99 TLC). Also, one of the forum members (CDan) is a Toyota parts manager for American Toyota and sells OEM parts to forum members at a discount (I bought my FSM's and other stuff from him). So, basically you can get great advice and parts in the same place.

I really wish this site would pick up, but I've been lingering here for quite some time and there's really not a lot of posts (or posts with substance).

  3. thats good to hear they doing research on their products to make it safer overall.

I am not sure what the purpose of the bar would be other than holding the winch ?Is that what it is made for ,or to protect the bumper also?

ARB designs Bull Bars to protect the front of your truck when hitting Bull Kangaroos, small trees, bushes, etc. It is made out of stamped steel vs my plastic cover.

The bull bar is also specifically designed to mount a 10,000lb winch while allowing the air bag deployment sensors to work. It is designed to handle the strain of winching a 6000lb vehicle out of anything.

    Thanks,

    George

I grew up in Arizona and I don't recall coming across many kangaroos? :P

Make sure you post some pics of the LX with the Bull Bar!!!

  4. Whew, any damage?

I think maybe lockers would have helped, I have one on my '99 Land Cruiser (rear and center) but not on my wife's '98 LX470 (only center). And it really is effective. I'll drive into the deep sand at the beach with the TLC but not the LX, I just don't have the confidence in the LSD.

So which bull bar did you get? I'm hoping to put a ARB Sahara bar on the '99.

  5. IMHO, I think the best (and cheapest) option is to get the factory deck fixed. I know it's not as fun as buying new toys, but nothing is going to look as good as the OEM deck. The way they have designed the bezel that goes around the deck, it's going to be expensive to have something fabricated to make an aftermarket unit look good.

    1) See above.

    2) I don't.

    3) Yes

    4) I've heard good things.

    5) No thanks.

    Good luck!

  6. I have the same problem in my new-to-me 01. I'm getting the wheels rotated and balance, plus a 4-wheel alignment. It's being working on right now. That should fix it.

If you paid for a 4 wheel alignment on your UZJ100 I beleive you got ripped off. There aren't any adjustments to the rear wheel alignment. You can only do thrust angle alignment on the front.

  7. They both went bad at exactly the same time??? That sounds fishy. Backtrack the wiring, could be a simple fuse (which the dealer should have caught). If not, maybe a bad switch?? I would guess that both mirrors wouldn't go bad like that, maybe one, but not both.

  8. Save yourself some money, go to a reputable shop have 'em do a transmission flush and replace with synthetic trannie fluid ($125). Replace the center and rear dif fluid with synthetic (about $40 ea). Flush the cooling system (?$), get a new serpentine belt ($100). Do the rest yourself and save a lot of $$$$$. If you haven't already, replace the motor oil with Synthetic, I do these myself it takes about 20 mins. and is super easy! Do the rest of the stuff yourself. $$$ quotes are guestimates.

  9. Preface: I'm learning too, so I'm no expert. Here’s my take……..

The salesman is right. You will most likely only need 4HI 99% of the time (depending on your plans with this vehicle). Just remember that the LX470 is a Toyota Land Cruiser all gussied up. The TLC has a long history of being a very capable off-road vehicle. http://www.tlca.org/trails/articles/history/landcrsr

OK, the 4WD HI vs LO. Refer to the manual for shifting between the two. But, if you are going to be driving through deep snow, mud or sand 4Lo will give you added traction and torque. Use the center differential lock to gain traction if the either the front or back wheels do not have traction, this will send equal amounts of power to the front wheels and the back.

This link will demonstrate how the whole thing works.

It's written for the 80 but a lot can be applied to 4WD in general. Big difference is the LX is not going to have front and rear diff locks. A center diff lock only.

  10. You have to remove the entire center console cover (area around the shifter). It's not screwed in, but rather held in place with clips, so you have to remove it slowly and methodically in order not to break anything. You'll have to unplug the switches for the heated seats and hight control as I recall. To get it all the way out you have to unscrew the 4hi/lo shifter knob.
