  1. Check these threads out. http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...aded&start= PF
  2. I looked & there wasn't any OEM rubber mats for my '98 GS400 so I got some from WeatherTech given the excellent quality & fitting products (visor, trunk liner, etc) I bought from them over the years. http://www.weathertech.com PF
  3. My Lexus dealer had to replace the OEM battery of my 98 GS400 one week before the warranty expires with another OEM. I finally replaced the 2nd OEM with an Autozone Duralast 24-DLG (yellow/gold top) last year & that things takes about half the time to crank start the engine compared to the 2 previous ones. Only time will tell it's durability but so far I like it. Btw, there's no aftermarket audio or engine mod done to my vehicle. If you were to do your own battery swap just make sure you wire brush clean the inside of the terminal clamps to create good contact. PF
  4. May be the GS400 & GS300 does NOT share the same type of spark plugs? ;) http://sparkplugs.com/results_app.asp?prod...mp;AAIA=1316103 http://sparkplugs.com/results_app.asp?prod...mp;AAIA=1316113 PF
  5. My 98 GS400 owners manual says car is fitted with iridium-tipped spark plugs & 'twin ground electrode' spark plugs for the GS300. PF
  6. This is what I have saved from an earlier thread on how to program the key remote but haven't had to use it for I've been lucky being able to change the battery w/o breaking it. Good luck. ******************************************** . Close and lock all doors. Unlock and open drivers door. 2. Put key into ignition and remove. Do not turn it on. 3. Using the door electric lock switch above inside handle. Lock and unlock 5 times. (Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock) 4. Close and open drivers door. 5. Using the door electric lock switch above inside handle. Lock and unlock 5 times. (Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock) 6. Put key into ignition. Turn to "ON" , turn off and remove. 7. You will see the door locks cycle by themselves. If the door locks do not cycle (lock and unlock) by themselves then the car isn’t in programming mode and you must start over. 8. On the remote, press and hold the LOCK and the UNLOCK button at the same time for no more than 2 seconds. 9. On the remote, press the LOCK button for no more than 1 second. AT THIS POINT, the locks should cycle by themselves ONE time. This means the procedure was accepted. IF the locks cycle twice it has failed. The most common reason for programming failure is because the car didn’t receive a good signal from the remote. To fix this problem try these tips. 1) Stand outside of the car while you are performing steps 8 and 9. 2) Don’t hold the remote buttons down as long. As long as the car is still in programming mode you can keep trying steps 8 and 9 until you complete the programming. If you wait too long and the car exits the programming mode then you must start over. After you get the remote to program then continue on with step 10. 10. Close and open door to end programming procedure.
  7. Did you say 'overheated'? My previuos experience with other car brands (Chrysler & MG) overheating almost always end up with a blown head gasket. Does the engine oil look or the exhaust fume smell 'normal'? Have you tried to have codes pulled off the ECU to see if it registers any problem? These are as much as I can think of since I'm not that mechanically or automobile (yes, even with Lexus) inclined. PF
  8. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexus_GS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexus_SC See if these help. PF
  9. Looking @ OP's sig I think he probably meant SC400. But $54,700! That was about how much my GS400 cost back in 1998. PF
  10. You mean GS300? I thought the GS400 first came out in 1998. PF
  11. http://www.epa.gov/compliance/resources/ca...caa/toyota.html Tried search to see if this had been posted/discussed but couldn't find any. My '98 GS400 is on the list. PF
  12. K&N 33-2170 ($52 @ Amazon) should work for your GS. As for the key I would start with ebay. PF
  13. Just out of curiosity, how many of you with >100,000K on your GS400 had followed exact maintainance schedule as the Lexus manual & had your timing belt changed? My '98 would probably qualify for the lowest mileage but intend to keep it for the reliability. This past summer I had a friend who drives a MB (5-series I believe) visited from Canada & he kept commenting on how quiet the Lexus is c/w his MB. I didn't even bother to brag about it's reliability. A colleague who bought a BMW 745 the same time I got the GS & that thing had been nothing but problem (averaging twice a year) for him with the car @ times being kept days in the dealership waiting for parts from Germany. PF
  14. Don't have chance to check on my 30000 (major), 45000 (minor) service charges or how much my dealer will charge for the 60000, 75000 or 90000 BUT I have their mailed flyer quoting their 'free mileage points award program' of 500 points each for the 15000, 45000 & 75000 minor services & 1000 points each for the 30000, 60000 & 90000 major services. Does that imply they would be equivalent in prices? PF
  15. Except for the hybrid model that ends in 'h' which I believe has a V-6 gasoline engine. PF
  16. I would definitely check with other dealers & garages to compare rates. Get out your owners manual to see exactly what replacements are called for @ 60,000 miles and see if some outside competent mechanics can do them @ lower rates. There's no way they can charge you that much for 'inspecting' a bunch of fluids, brake pads & belts. Keep in mind you're already out of the basic bumper-bumper warranty & only 10,000 away from getting past the powertrain warranty & is this worth that kinda money? Where I am there's only one dealership & I definitely see them growing leaps & bounds (may be goood news for they either not be able to keep up the work load or competition will come soon). I happen to own a very low mileage '98 GS400 & when I called the other day asking about timing belt replacement, the service manager told me not to worry about age especially since the car doesn't even have 45,000 on it. He said let them check the belt @ my 45,000 miles service (I swear I heard him mumbled something about a $300 charge) before doing anything as the car is still going as smooth & strong as new. PF
  17. Thank you guys for I'm looking forward to doing some of the routine replacement/maintainance if at all possible since the car is way past warranty yet still has very low mileage. In fact after I posted the ? on this thread I began reading some of the other posts & ended up buying a copy of it's service manual (CD-R) off ebay. AS a side note, any of you had test driven the IS350? I was @ my local Lexus dealership day before X'mas, they were so busy that I wandered around for over half an hour without being noticed. After squeezing a quick answer from one of the passing-by saleman about how they kept the IS in another lot away from the dealership I left & went to Infiniti. PF
  18. Hi, I am new to the forum & would like to know if I can change the battery on my 98 GS 400 myself when the time comes for it to quit on me? Reason I ask is 'cause my last one (original with the car) lasted exactly 4 years, 1 week before my warranty runs out. And if so other than loosening/tightening/cleaning of the terminals & the battery swap is there anything else different than that with any other cars do I need to do to avoid messing up the ECU/remote memory storage/setting. etc? For I recall the dealer always asked for both of my remotes everytime when I bring the car in for service with anything involving the ECU. Thank you & glad I found this forum. PF
