  1. Where did you get instructions for reading the code? My light is on and I can't figure you how to proceed. - Dan
  2. The clutch turns free when it is warm. When it is hot it becomes viscous.
  3. I would like to put a rack on the roof of my LS400. What pointers can anyone provide as to options? Thank you in advance - Dan
  4. I took the vehicle to the local auto shop. The R12 system had been converted to r134a. The system holds a chargs but apparently has a small to medium leak. There is dye in it so the next step is to look for the leak. - Dan
  5. Good morning, The vehicle is a '91 LS400. The AC is low, the site glass shows almost no fluid. The pressure is high enough to allow the compressor to run. My question is: What is the Schrader valve fitting? R12 systems (and I believe r134a) have the fitting threads on the outside of the valve stem, like a normal tire, etc. The fitting on this system are on the inside of the valve stem. I have not seen this type of fitting before. What is it? What does it imply as to the coolent? Thanks - Dan
  6. Thank you. Both lights came one and off twice today. They were on for about 15 minutes and then went off. It is not necessary to clear the diagnostic codes to clear the lights. Still no clue to the cause. - Dan
  7. All, The vehicle is a 1991 LS400. The check engine and trac off lights come on and off together intermittently. Is this a code? Does anyone know what it means? Thanks - Dan
  8. All, They are a simple low flow filter to allow air into the EGR control circuit. They seem to be cotton or felt. They could be washed or blown dry. They are not a low tolerance part, cleaning should work. You might try finding one of similar size from another car - a trip to the junk yard? The only important dimension is diameter; thickness could vary quite a lot and work. - Dan
  9. Thanks for the tip. FYI - The '91 LS400 takes a CR1216 (3V). $4 at the local HW store (they did not replace it for me.) - Dan
  10. I am not familiar with 2 wire sensors. If you have a DVM and a butane torch you can heat the sensor and measure the voltage (to ground). It will read between 0 and 1 volts when hot. 0 to .2 will be a blue flame and .7 to .9 will be a yellow flame. The lead that shows those voltages should be the same as a one wire sensor. Sensors are sensitive, they require a high impedance meter such as a newer DVM. I use a one wire sensor in an MG to 'dial in' the carbs. They will find the neutral mixure point, and will even pick up the difference between regular and E15. - Dan
  11. All, The vehicle is a '91 ls400 with air suspension. Car is generally in excellant condition. However one of the 3 or 4 issues is the air suspension system . Is there a basic source for information on air suspension on an early ls400? Where is the air pump on the ls400? Is there documentation on testing the air pump? Is there a way to test the individual air shocks? Do the air shocks have springs or are they air only? Thanks - Dan
  12. All, The car is a '91 ls400 that is generally in excellant shape. However - the speedometer is pinned at -30 mph. It shows a very small tick when moving at 55 or 60. The tach and odometer all work. The trip meter works, but does not read tens of a mile, only miles. Has any one seen this? Does anyone know the cause? Is this a unit replacement or can it be repaired? Thanks in advance - Dan
