  1. I was wondering if anyone with experience could comment on this? I have heard everything from very good to very bad regarding oil additives that swell gaskets to stop oil leaks.
  2. I'm afraid they did send me the engine filter, but when I called them he swore up and down that I had the correct part # to match the cabin air filter. They said I could send it back for a full refund, no problem. But that still leaves me without a cabin air filter. I called my local Toyota dealer, and they don't even carry a cabin air filter for a 2001 Lexus GS300. I don't know who posted the previous message, but I'm not sure a Toyota cabin air filter is the same as a Lexus cabin air filter, seeing as they didn't even carry a Lexus cabin filter. They told me to call the Lexus dealer Here is my receipt from ElAutoparts.com for the cheaper of the two filters for a 93 GS300 shipped to upstate NY: 1 Acc Cabin Filter Activated Charcoal per Car Qty:1; NPN R2060-138489 $17.97 $17.97 Subtotal: $17.97 Shipping - UPS Ground Residential: $9.16 Total Weight (0.3lbs. ): FL residents pay 6.00 % Tax: $0.00 Order Total: $27.13
  3. Repair Manual After you get to Auto Repair Reference Center: 1993>Lexus>GS300>Repair Procedures>Engine Performance and Tune-Up>Engine Electrical>Alternator ;) Thanks for the link. I actually competed the job right after my last post but I will save the link for future jobs.
  4. Why are you replacing the alt ? You really want to fix it cheap, just buy the 2 contacts or brushes as they are called and pop them in. I do this for Alts and starters and have never replaced the entire unit. $10 will do it. Excuse my ignorance but what are brushes? Contacts... I have to assume you are speaking of the contacts on the unit for the cable and connector to the unit. How do you fix something by "popping" it in? Basically what I am asking is, can you be more descriptive? Your solution is too ambiguous. I wished it were that simple. Also, is there a tension pulley I am missing. I have the bottom bolt off and the top bolt is stuck due to the tension on the belt and I cannot remove the belt from the pulley. Thanks again for the help.
  5. 93 GS300 150K miles. I have a slow oil leak coming from the top of engine on pass side that is dripping on alternator which eventually caused alt to fail. I suspect a bad head gasket and I have read this is not uncommon for this model at high miles. How much would a head gasket replacement cost roughly? Are there any good stop-leak oil additives that may help? I cringe at both options. I imagine it's expensive to replace the gasket and I am afraid any oil additives could potentially compound my problems (I also read this model is also known for excessive oil build-up which causes issues with the gasket). Any information and advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  6. I guess it's too easy for a step-by-step. Disco the battery, loosen the tension bolt, remove the belt, remove both bolts and the alt, then reverse that for installation. If there is anything else I may be missing, maybe someone will let me know. Good day. By the way, I did a search for this here before posting and found nothing.
  7. I have determined my alternator is dead and I am going to replace it myself tomorrow. I have replaced alternators before so I am fairly comfortable doing it. However I would be grateful for any links to a step-by-step so I don't miss any "gotchas" and I do it right. Thanks.
  8. I think that color is illegal in most states.
  9. I totally agree. There should be separate forums for each generation. Please make the change? :cries:
