  1. More than you may need to know about oil filters: http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/
  2. The vehicle repair industry makes a ton of money on stolen cars. The average repair cost of stolen vehicles locally is something like $3500. Some dealerships and repair shops need the business to survive, and there is no incentive to stop it. Short story: Christmas one year my wife and I went shopping, and decided to go for dinner on the way home. Parked, walked 50 ft to restaurant, line up too long, went back to van to find it gone, with gifts. We're talking under 2 minutes! Later that weekend cops phoned to say they chased our van, rammed it,thieves ran and they grabbed 'em, claimed the house breaking tools they had were ours (!) They spent xmas in jail, but could NOT BE CHARGED WITH CAR THEFT because the police did not see them steal anything. They were charged with possessing something stolen of value over $5000. Charges were later dropped due to lack of interest.... violent crimes more important. I picked the van up, as directed by the police. On the way home the sliding door fell off! Regan.
  3. Anybody heard of sludging in the ES300 when Synthetic oil is used? Well, once again, I'm thinking of using Mobil 1 this time in my Sienna... Tried it on a few cars since about 1978, cars so loose and worn out that I'd go back to dino oil. (super thin synthetic would leak past rings on a couple of vettes I had, fouling the plugs, convertor and oxygen sensor). Total pain. Whats bugging me now is the Sienna sludge problem... If I extend the oil change interval to 10,000km(6000 miles) then am I more likely to get tagged with The Japanese Emperors Revenge (sludge)? I really like my Sienna, and plan to keep it for years. Maybe I should just change the oil every 5000km (3000miles) and sleep easy. Besides changing the oil is good for a warm and fuzzy feeling. But still.... Mobil1/Amsoil/Royal Purple is top quality.... anybody heard of sludge problems using synthetic in the RX or ES300? Casey.
  4. http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/Saving...acar/P37269.asp I still intend to change anti-freeze every year. It's a cheap and easy job. I know more than one person who have rebuilt engines because of old anti-freeze destroying head gaskets.

  6. My local paper, the Vancouver Sun, did an article just last week on what a waste of money premium gas is. Supercharged and turbocharged cars are the exception, as they can have detonation. The experts they contacted say that the amount of horsepower even a Porsche makes with premium gas over regular is not noticable to the driver. Only a timing device would register the extra power, so they say. Years ago a high horse power engine had to have premium, as there were not any knock sensors. Everybody's engine rattled now and then. Hey, do you know what that pinging is? It's the sound of the cylinder walls vibrating like a bell! ....Ouch. Real detonation is not the same as pinging, and can destroy an engine. Modern knock sensors keep that from happening. I like to fill up with premium when I go on a highway trip into the Rockies. With lots of passing on mountains, I like the extra insurance of having premium. The rest of the time regular works ok, and the experts agree. Regan.
  7. Rich Sweitzer: 294,000 miles ! You have hardly done any repairs to this car ! This is exactly why I want to get a LS400!!! thanks buddy! Regan.
  8. Synthetic is really thin, and if you have a problem now burning Dino oil, it will be worse with synthetic. My experience with high mileage engines ('66 corvette,'86 corvette) is that synthetic will blow past the rings and fowl the spark plugs, oxygen sensor and catalytic convertor. Try 20w 50 regular SL oil in summer and 10w30 in winter. Regan.
  9. Michelin has a new tire 'HydroEdge', that will fit the LS400. The size is 225/60R-16 97T. Michelin rates this tire higher than it's'X'. It looks cool... You can see it at http://www.michelinman.com/catalog/tires/M...html?source=mid The speed rating is T (up to 118 mph) instead of V (149 mph). The tire load rating is 97, the same as original so if you keep things under 118mph, it is a good choice. By the way, I am glad I found this web site. Everybody seems very civil and friendly here. For a few years I owned a Corvette, and the Vette web sites can be out of control! I do not own a Lexus, but am interested in getting one. I have had very good luck with Toyota vans, and because of this luck would like to get an LS 400. cheers Regan
