  1. Are you flushing the tranns or just doing drain/fill? Either way mind saying how much it costs, I am doing d/f at 10-15k in the future?
  2. WW, thanks, interesting thread, wish I knew more about these things.
  3. WW, In trying to drive to protect this '03 transmission then, can I infer from your last sentence that if I kind of drive more slowly with a more steady throttle rather than rapid jump accelerating that the clutches will seat better with less torque applied by the engine - and maybe last longer?
  4. Does that advice apply to the 2wd models as well? I'm going to drain/fill every 10-15k or at least once every 2 years to try to keep the fluid fresh. right now it is looking and smelling pretty good.
  5. Last things first, you should change your oil somewhere between 4000 and 5000 mi if you use synthetic oil IMHO. Also IMHO you're nuts to use dino oil in an RX since they run so hot normally. At the rate you mention of 400 mi per month you'll end up changing your oil about once a year, $23, $25, even $30 is just not that much money to spend once a year to know you're engine is being protected properly. Also, you should invest in a top-notch oil filter as well since it may be sitting on there for a year, spend the $10 and get the Mobil1 filter. Fwiw, I make the same assessment and only use synthetic at about 5k, a few bucks a year to protect an engine worth thousands is well worth it to me but i leave the filter selection up to the dealer or local fast oilchange place that has Mobil1.
  6. Presume you have checked the obvious and the O/D light in the instrument panel is out, button is on the shifter on mine to turn it on/off. (I wish this car had more O/D, at 65mph it turns nearly 2800rpm, a 5-speed I have runs about 2100rpm at 65mph.)
  7. WW, thank you for chronicling your experience with the VSC. I was wondering how to check to see if it is really working as I never see any indications on the instrument control panel and one rarely if ever has it function in normal vehicle use, unless in icy weather. I would guess the 2003, that appears to be the third year of this feature, has any upgrades available. I rarely get to test mine, as you did in a parking lot in snow, but I plan to do so as soon as the snow arrives.
  8. See if they are providing the 2003 engine that presumably has the fix for the issue causing the sludge buildup as that year is not included in the class action suit.
  9. WW: (emphasis added to quote) 1. So is every Lift-throttle event when I approach a red light or stop sign causing this same excessive wear and tear then, or as you say the extra wear is only if one quickly needs to reaccelerate? It sounds like coasting to stops is not excessively wearing on the clutches? 2. Do you think I should flush my FWD trannsmission and replace fluid @~40k? Mine basically says no fluid changes until 90k or something - similar language is even on the dipstick.
  10. RC, $1200 is nice, is yours AWD? Very nice look inside, how'd you do that light color wood interior?
  11. I don't like those short holders either and have spilled drinks often, same in the rear console holders. Good luck with your "fix" that is about the best I have heard. [edit: I hate wasting my Starbucks! :)]
  12. If you mean the small tweeter speaker in the front corner of the dash I had rattles there on a '99. By moving the speaker around on its mounting plate and squeezing in some cushioning material under the its sliding plate you might get it - and might not. I think there was also some other rattle in there near there I couldn't get at. Check the TSBs, I believe there was one that described fixing rattles in that area, I think they put extra padding in there. No rattles there on my '03 - I hope they built it with a mattress in there!! :)
  13. thank you for replying Tang... yes, I have my car in service at local Lexus now...... I only have this rx300 for 3 months and I just changed my first oil at Toyota and found this problem, rightnow i don't know whether I should keep this rx300 or trade it? any advices... So will this problem happen agian? What do you mean that changing oil at Toyota they found this problem, did they see sludge?
  14. I don’t think that disclosure eliminates liability for actionable issues, does it? Also, in this case it might be relatively easy to show by examining some engines that harm was done by sludge accumulation, even though the engine didn’t totally seize or fail, which shortens overall engine life. I’m not taking sides here, so far my car seems ok, but with this potential issue I am not really sure how it’ll be long term and the last time I saw post somewhere on replacing engines, they aren’t cheap.
  15. Karl, thank you for that post, hope it works forever for you!! How did you get into the door though, I'd never believe I could get into that impenetrable door panel? We all owe you a beer(s) !
  16. WWest, I really enjoy reading your informative posts. Any idea if this potential for overheating (I emboldened that section of your original post) warrants shifting to neutral while parked and/or standing in gear? If Ford got there first, wonder what the patent cost is on that innovation?
  17. Can you install an autostart mechanism to keep from having to run out in the cold!?
  18. Do you have a spoiler, could the water come in through rusting mounting for the spoiler? Does that water drain outside the car or inside if the hatch is down?
  19. Thanks for posting that fix!! :) So far my "03 is ok fwiw.
