  1. I am looking to buy a used Lexus. Normally, I would think low miles means good things. But when we are talking about a 10-year old car with only 40-50K miles, does it really make a difference? For example, if I bought such a low miles used car, can I really wait until I actually hit 90K to change the timing belt etc or should I have it done anyway? Also are parts on a car mileage dependent or age dependent. What do I really gain by lower miles (in a 10+ year old car)? Very basic question but I am wondering whether to pay more to buy a low miles car or just go with a car with more miles. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.
  2. I've always had oil changes done at the Lexus dealer, and he only recommends changing every 5k miles. Recently, I was at the Toyota dealer to get the timing belt replaced, and since the guy assured me that they use the same "Toyota" oil that Lexus dealers do, there would be no difference in an oil change either. So to save myself time, I went ahead and had that done also. Thing is, the sticker on my windshield now says my next oil change is after 3k miles. Does this mean that the Toyota dealer actually used a different oil? or can I continue to go 5k miles between oil changes? FWIW, the car now has almost 100k miles. This is for a 1998 es300. Thanks.
  3. The Lexus dealership wants $650 for just timing belt (it's $1400 for the 90K service). This guy wants $250. And you are right, I just called the Toyota dealership and to my delight they quoted $250 also. That sounds pretty good to me.
  4. My 1998 es300 has well over 90k on it and needs the timing belt replaced. As everybody knows, this is way too expensive at the dealer and even at local shops. I found someone on Craigslist who quoted a reasonable price. Any suggestions on what I should ask him in terms of his qualifications or experience to judge his ability to do the work? btw, he will be doing the work at his house. Thanks for any pointers.
