  1. There is one thing about the Original mirror you need to know. The Auto-Dimming button on the mirror (which cuts down headlight reflections in the mirror at night) also activates the auto-dimming on the rear view mirrors on the doors....
  2. Were those antenna's from 'antennaX' by any chance? I also got a replacement antenna from eBay for my non-Lexus car and the same thing happened to me...
  3. I would like to hear from other SC430 owners the comments they get on their car. I drive a 2002 SC430, Silver with 35K miles. I bought it in 2006 with 19K miles after much debate. Previously I had only driven Camaro / Mustang convertibles but decided I was really getting tired of the rumble and harshness of the 'muscle cars' and wanted a smoooooth hardtop convertible that rode well, had rear wheel drive and plenty of power if it was needed. The SC430 fit the bill though I was worried it would be seen as 'too soft'. To my surprise, this car has received more compliments than any convertible I have owned! When I first picked it up, I drove it to a gas station with the top down to fill it up. Another customer walked over and said "Damn man! That is one drop dead gorgeous car!" A few days later I pulled into a "Zippy Mart" to quench my thirst and the young teenage kid looked out and saw my car and said sadly 'Man! I'd never be able to afford a good looking ride like that!' The best compliment I received was when I was stopped at work by a lady who asked me "Do you drive that little silver sports car in the parking lot?" (It's the ONLY SC430 out there) I replied "Yes I do!" She told me "That car is sooo beautiful! When I saw it I told my husband I have got to find one when I retire!" What are your stories?
  4. Thanks for the reply. I contacted another friend who has worked at a Nissan dealership for 20 years and he agreed it was best to leave it alone if all was working well. I think I may do what you did and go synthetic at 40K miles which should be in the fall based on my current driving. (I drive about 200 miles per week unless it rains, I have a beater for driving in the rain and leave the SC in the garage)
  5. The car regarding this question is a 2002 SC430 with 35K miles. It runs great and has not given any issues other than an O2 sensor that needed replacing. One of my good friends is a BG Products representative in another state, he is strongly recommending that I take my Lexus to a local dealer that uses BG Products and have my transmission flushed, have new fluid put in, and also add BG Product transmission treatment. The reason being is that if I do this before the car hits 36K I will get a warranty against transmission repairs from BG. They will pay up to 2K if I have any transmission problems for the life of the car. Before my friend mentioned this, I had the Lexus serviced at the Toyota dealership and spoke to them about flushing the transmission fluid and the Service Manager told me there was no need to do this though they did flush the differential. What do you guys think? BTW - I did find a place that does the 'BG Transmission service' and it costs $175.
  6. Ouch, $150 apiece from my dealer....
  7. Has anyone tried replacing their trunk struts? My 2002 SC 430's trunk will not stay open, it looks like the struts might not be too hard to replace but I have a habit of underestimating how hard something can be... Also, how much are struts? Note: This only affects opening the trunk, the power top works perfectly...
  8. > The only thing that was done repairwise since the car was new was 02 sensor and trunk shocks. > My 2002 SC430 (Bought two years ago with 18K miles, now has 28K miles) recently needed any OXY sensor replacement and the trunk shocks are getting a little weak. That may be the one common thing that goes wrong on the 2002's. Other than that, the car has been great.... If I keep the MPH at 60 (top down, AC off), it delivers 27 MPG, I have gotten over 30 mpg driving at 55....
  9. $600?? I think that's a bit high. My local Toyota dealership replaced my sensor on my 2002 for $270....parts and labor included.
  10. Congratulations on your 430. I use engine braking when going down hills. I don't have a response for downshifting, if I really need to accelerate fast I put the switch on the console to POWER mode. Motor Oil - I use Mobile Synthetic for my 2002 SC430. Gas - Unless things changed drastically from 2002 - 2003, I am pretty sure you need to use Premium.
  11. With gas zooming past 3.50 a gallon for premium in my area, I was wondering if anyone had been running mid-grade in their lexus? I've been running Amaco Ultimate in my 2002 (27K Miles) for 2 years and am thinking about trying Amaco Silver with gas getting so expensive. Perhaps running Amaco Silver and a bottle of Octane boost? Just curious how that would work.
  12. That's what I had hoped someone would say, what I was afraid of was someone would say that it had to be reprogrammed to the Lexus. Anyway, I got a small Philips from my model kit screwdrivers and removed the three screws and replaced the battery (CR1616 - Duracell Replacement = DL1616) and all is working as should. Thanks for allaying my fears!
  13. The key fob on my 2002 SC430 is starting to act funny, when I press the buttons on it the red light does not flash until I keep pressing and finally I get a light and the doors/trunk will open. I suspect the battery is going dead since it is the original one. Q: Is this something I can replace or do I need to go to the dealer?
  14. Well, My 2002 Lexus just hit 27K miles so it is time to start thinking about the 30K service. There is an excellent Toyota Dealership near my house that I believe I will have do the service. The owner of the dealership also owns the LEXUS dealership downtown but that one is 45 minutes away versus 10. Can anyone tell me what the 30K service entails and an approximate cost?
  15. If your dealer replaced the filter he probably cleaned out any debris that existed so the smell must be coming from another source. I have had this problem on other cars, the problem on those vehicles turned out to be mold in the evaporator unit. On both cases, the evaporator had to be removed and cleaned. Now, I have heard of people who have contacted people that do "Environmental Cleaning" for houses that have mold. Supposedly there is some chemical that can be sprayed right into the AC vents that will kill ALL mold. I have never tried it and it sounds scary but it would be nice if it worked!
  16. That looks VERY good! You could start a business selling those!
  17. DO NOT POST YOUR EMAIL LOOKING FOR COUNTERFEIT DVD DISKS FROM TONY OR STEPH . ANYONE POSTING OR PM'ING FOR A BOOTLEG DISK WILL BE BANNED AND THE POST AND PM'S DELETED ! THANK YOU SKperformance....... Car: SC 430, 20K miles. (This will lead into the DVD) I was having slow starting problems over the weekend and yesterday the car would not turn over at all. So I charged it overnight and went to the local Parts store to get a battery and found that you MUST go to Lexus. So, I went to the Lexus dealer and found that the SC430 takes a special battery due to the top mechanism. The bill was $225 which included a "free" wash and wax polish plus a bottle of touch up paint. While I was there, I asked about a GPS update and was told it would be $325 including "installation". Does that seem reasonable G
  18. > Now, this is hardly the end of the world, but I have a sickness. Things like that bore a hole through my psyche and I must find a way to fix it. > And here I thought I was the only one in the world like that! Man, the previous owner must have REALLY been changing stations a lot! I can imagine him driving down the road, top down, left hand on wheel, right hand on tuner knob.. Sorry I don't have a solution, but I was glad to see I am not the only one driven batty by an issue like that.
  19. My mistake, it is MY first oil change with the SC430 but prior to that it had an oil change at the first 1500 mile mark and every 3000 miles or 6 months (whichever came first) after that. When I bought it with 19K, it had just had an oil change and new tires put on.
  20. Well, it is getting near time for my first oil change with the SC430. It will have 22,000 miles and I was wondering what other Lexus owners preferred in an oil? I normally change my own oil, I have done so for years without any issues but I think I will let the local dealer handle the Lexus. For the past year, on my other vehicles I have used Mobile One - 5/30 Synthetic with factory filters. Any suggestions for the SC430?
  21. I am rechecking now, I think the combo remote start/remote top drop unit may require wire cutting.
  22. Has anyone tried this product? I just located a company that sells a product that will allow me to open my top remotely using the remote fob! http://www.luxurymotorworks.com/luxlink_remote_top.php Too bad my local Lexus Dealer won't install it... I'm going to find someone to install this...
  23. Hey hawaiilex, Glad to see I am not the only one who likes his SC430! My wife and I took our 2002 out this weekend on a date. After dining out we got in the car and I pressed the top button to take it down. As it was doing it's thing I looked to my left and a couple was watching and the guy literally had his face plastered against his cars window looking like a kid outside a toy store! It was hilarious! The only thing I wish the car would do is let me lower the top from the key ring, that would be awesome! But I am very pleased with it....
  24. I bought a 2002 SC430 a few weeks ago and have really been pleased with it. This is my first "Luxury Car" so I have nothing to compare it with as you do. But compared to the other cars I have owned (which have all been American brands) the SC 430 is great. I having a POS 97-Tahoe, a 1990 Ford Tempo, and now owning a 96 Buick as my daily driver...the Lexus SC430 is wonderful and I love it. If the LS series is even better, I'll get that one as my next car!
  25. I recently became the owner of an SC430 (2002) and am quite pleased with it. I bought it used with 19K miles on it for 38K. I cannot comment on tire wear as the tires had just been changed but from what I hear the run-flat tires do wear out pretty quick. When the time comes I may try the non-run flat since I mainly use this car as a toy for weekends and going back and forth to work. The paint still looks new, mine was in a garage (still is) and maybe that helped. When I waxed it for the first time it did seem "rough" but I then used a clay bar on it and the paint is now smooth as glass. As far as rattles go, I have yet to hear any, I find the car is very tight and when the top is up I can seen no difference between it and a full hard top. Gas mileage is very good (IMO). I usually average 25 - 27 MPG with the top down. Acceleration is wicked quick. The back seat is pretty much worthless but I knew this when I was looking at the car. I still have my SUV for the kids and a van. Try this: Goto this site http://www.carreview.com/mfr/lexus/luxury-...53_1529crx.aspx and read the reviews on the Lexus. Good luck.
