  1. Just over 100,000 miles and the hybrid battery failed. $7000 forked over. Last Lexus hybrid for me.
  2. The rep at the company who repairs my GS400 said that they have replaced cats with aftermarkets on Lexus's and Toyota's, and after that is done the check engine light eventually comes on again. He speculates that the aftermarket bolt-ons don't have the platinum level to make things work as original.
  3. I have 230k on my 1998 and I keep it in top shape. My shop just changed out a bank 2 O2 sensor after seeing a P0430 code and found that sensor slow in responding. They said the next time the check engine light comes on with the P0430 code they will need to changeout the right cat at $1350 parts and labor. I am wondering if I can just swap out the cats with the much cheaper after markets found at sites like autopartswarehouse.com ? Just a side note: I have been looking at a replacement for this car, namely a 2006 GS300 and have driven two, each with over 80k miles on them. Owners of these obviously didn't keep up on maintenance and both cars were junk compared to my 98 gs400.
  4. Just went over 217,000 miles this week. Last time I posted I had 169,000 miles. I was planning to buy a 2006 GS300 with lower miles, but the GS400 beast is a much better car and I will stay with it.
  5. I had the leveler light come on a few weeks ago, but I am theorizing that it is the built-up moisture inside the lens from all of the soggy winter weather that messed up the leveler. That light went out on the next drive. Off topic a little. If anyone knows how to get the lenses off all four light assemblies in order to clean the moisture and scum out, that is my question. 6. I have a '98 GS 400- Black/black in excellent cosmetic shape. It has 170,000 miles and I drive it everyday. It is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned and receives lots of stares. It has plenty of power and gets almost 25 mpg on the highway. I have regular maintenance done on it and am proactive in changing out components as I can afford it. Recently I had the lower ball joints replaced. I do not use a Lexus dealer for maintenance as I have found a very good shop with reasonable rates that specializes in Lexus and Toyota. I have used them for 3 years now and this has made it possible to afford the car. Do your homework before buying the car, such as using Carfax. Take the car in for a full diagnostic, including a look at the front end. Check previous repair records for component replacement such as the serpentine belt, timing belt, water pump, ball joints, etc. You can do your own oil changes. Just drop the plastic pan and the filter and oil pan is accessible. This forum has been invaluable in troubleshooting a few problems, namely the door locks. Good luck with your purchase. CitationCapt
  7. I have a '98GS 400 that had this same vibration problem a few years back and I replaced the shocks due to tire cupping. This symptom which ultimately led to steering vibration. The tires are Zexius 326's 245 ZR 17's and they are rotated and balanced every time I change the oil (about 3,000 mile intervals). My car has 158,000 miles on it and no vibration problems for 2 years. Good luck. CC
  8. I have a '98 GS400 with 156,000 miles in very good condition. Last night I noticed that the radio display backlighting (light green) is out on the left side. How do I replace any bulbs in this? Sorry, moderator that I posted to the wrong forum..... CC

  10. My GS400 has 147,700 miles on it. Black/black, regular service and very strong. My best vehicle ever.
