  1. The car "thinks" that the valet switch is set. You'll have to get to the wiring behind the switch and verify that the switch is working using a meter. This is fairly easy to do if you have a meter. You can check the switch by removing one of the wires and then short it to the other wire. If the fob and button works, replace the switch. Good luck -
  2. Yes, it's in the center console - lower compartment... remove everything and then lift-up the mat. You will see a small plastic door at the rear under the mat... remove the plastic cover and pull the wire loop... almost instant trunk access!
  3. You may have a point, I usually notice when I first start the car, and it is always too high. I know if I'm in a traffic jam it will read even higher as you noted, but it still would be nice if you could set it. I'll keep searching for a way, if I find it I'll post it here since now everyone is probably checking the accuracy of theirs. :whistles:
  4. Here is one. how do you it is wrong? I go by weather.com (says one thing). I go by banks etc and all are diff. It never agreed with the radio, so I brought a calibrated thermometer home from work and placed it in the garage next to the car. Next morning they differed by 3 degrees...
  5. I guess it shows how few and minor the problems are with my '02 430, but the only problem I have yet to figure out is that the outside temperature reading on the console is always about 3 degrees warmer than the actual outside temperature. Call it being picky, but does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the calibration so that it reads correctly?
  6. Both plastic pieces turn 90 degrees (top toward front of car) and then pull out of the sides and the glove compartment falls free. They are not screws and can be turned easily by hand. Once the glove compartment is down, the cover to the filter can be removed by pulling gently on the tabs with your fingers. The filter and cover are marked with an "UP" arrow for reassembly.
  7. I've always considered dropping the RFTs but being cheap, I was waiting until they were nearer to the end of their useable life. That is, until last weekend. I was driving on a highway and had the air pressure alarm go off. Sure enough, when I pulled over and checked the tires, the right rear was at zero. Being only about 25 miles from my dealer, I decided to limp over and get the tire fixed. WRONG! After about 12 miles the tire started to disassemble itself. I had to call Lexus towing and wait over an hour to get towed in. I no longer trust the RFTs to get me anywhere in case of puncture. The Lexus dealer informed me that there is no actual warranty for how long the RTS will hold-up and he thought 12 miles was pushing it! From reading the many posts here, and my own research, I already knew I would buy Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires, so I ordered 4 from Tire Rack and had them delivered. Picked the car up on Saturday and all I can say is DON'T wait to drop the RFTs! I can't believe the difference in noise, handling, and comfort with the new feet. BTW, I also purchased a 12V compressor/fix-a-flat combo unit from Tire Rack. I'm sure I'll get better than 12 miles if I ever get another flat. It's called CONTI COMFORT KIT-12V PORTABLE and costs $79. Add my voice to the pack.... don't keep the run flats!
  8. I replaced the starter on my '92 SC400 about 2 years ago and there is no difficult steps, but it did take 3 days, and you will need intake and TB gaskets. There were two difficult steps as I remember - disconnecting the injector harness (the plastic was VERY brittle broke two connectors and had to replace them) and reaching two of the rear facing bolts (one for the harness and one for the coolant pipe). I would certainly do it again if necessary, but I also hope it's not! I recommend you go for it. :whistles:
  9. I would also have to say "Advanced" I've owned an SC400 and now a SC430 for over 10 years with a single in shop repair (on a trip with a non-starting SC400). Interestingly, one of the most difficult repairs was to replace the starter motor on the '400. Who would ever put the starter under the intake manifold???! - Indio
  10. With my '92 Sc400 I used Mobil-1 with Mobil-1 or Pure-1 filters changed every 10,000 miles (it's easy to tell when you are due if you go every 10K on the odometer). I sold the car with the engine in perfect shape with 190,000 miles on it so I am fairly convinced that this is a good change interval. I will be doing the same with the Sc430 but my first change will be sooner so that the odo is exactly on a 10,000 multiple. In my case that is 30K. I have switched to the new extended service Mobil-1 with this car, but I do not know if it will make any difference. :D
  11. Thanks - - -Doesn't seem likely though - - the space is pretty skinny. ?? Could someone with a SC430 take a peek in their trunk. Thanks. You got me thinking so I took a peek at my '92.... and the slot is empty in mine as well. Next time I'm at Lexus I'll sneak a peek into a new one to see what's there. B) Thanks - - it sure does make me curious. Finally got back to the Lexus dealer and looked into three new SC430s and ... they all had an open slot there and no one could tell me what goes there. Fortunately I was there to get a few moulding clips and I mentioned the quandry to the person behind the counter who simply looked it up on their parts DVD. And the answer is ===> IF you do not have run-flat tires and have a spare in the trunk, that slot holds an air pressure gauge!

  13. Yes, stitch52, there are a few of us with rattles in the roof or passenger seat of our SC430s! If you get the chance - see if you can find out what they did to fix them. I've had mine back to the dealer twice and although they are sympathetic, they have been unable to find and kill the noise. Thanks for the help (from all of us!)
  14. A company in San Deigo makes good covers with slits in the side for the airbag. They aren't cheap, but they are really well made. The only problem I have is that they do not have covers for the back seat. If you need these you must pay them to make a pattern first and then the covers. Superlamb Auto Accessories http://www.superlambauto.com/ If you decide you want them and also want the back seat, perhaps we could split the cost of having them make the pattern? :)
  15. I experienced the same problem with my '92 SC400. The problem is with HOW your mechanic installed the new timing belt. Unlike most cars, the timing marks on the block for the cams and the crank are for a rough guide only. After the three shafts are set to these marks, the final position is set by the marks on the timing belt itself. You will get these two error lights as an indication that the two cam sensors are out of sync. Once the timing belt is installed properly, they will go off. Best to get the tech manual and follow the procedure EXACTLY. It doesnt make sense until you realize that the belt itself is where the timing is set. First time I changed my TB, I had to repeat it twice :o
