  1. Absolutely not!!! I got mine redone here: <http://www.american-stitches.com> and they did an amazing job! You have to send them a steering wheel core and shifter knob, but their work is excellent. My interior is tan/brn, and I had my shifter knob redone in the brn leather instead of the stock black. Also had the wheel done in wood/leather. Both matched my interior perfectly. Haven't posted any pics, so I need to do that. I had to buy an entire steering column from a salvage yard (they won't just sell the core), so that's what I sent 'em. Then just replaced the old with the new when they came back. I don't have an extra shifter knob - lost it somewhere along the way. But I do still have the extra steering column if you want it. You can have it for $80. Like I said, their work was excellent!
  2. I'll letcha know on the core only. There're a coupl'a other folks interested in getting both pieces, and I'd like to move both of em at the same time. As for the cost, it was $456 for both. I'll take some pics in the next day or so, but they did a really good job. Looks factory.
  3. This is absolutely crazy. I had to have a body shop do some work on my '96 LX450 (one of my employees ran into me in the office parking lot!). A little work on the driver's door and front fender panel. While in there, I had em repaint the hood, straighten the front bumper, a little PDR, and basically a few other cosmetic things. Since I've gotten it back none of the roof elements work: the sunroof, the dome & map lights... none of 'em. It's not a fuse; I've checked all that. And the shop doesn't have a freakin' clue. They don't know what they did. P*sses me off to no extreme, but that doesn't help. Anybody in here have a clue? Oh yeah, and my check engine light just came on at a little over 130,000. I've been readin some of the other posts on here about that, and they've been helpful. I know Honda trips their MIL at key odometer readings (30, 60, etc), 'cause the dealer showed me how to turn it off. Does anybody know if Toy/Lex does the same thing?
  4. I just had my steering wheel (96 LX450) recovered by American Stitches. Went from an all leather wheel to a wood/leather and had the knob recovered with interior colored leather rather than black. They did a great job! But now I have an extra steering core and shifter knob. I bought extras at salvage to recover so I didn't have to put on a temp before I had the new ones. Let me know if you're interested.
  5. Anybody got a good resource for the contacts? I've been told by the Lexus dealership that Lexus does not offer the parts - the contacts themselves. Talked to a pretty unkowledgable yahoo at a Yota dealership and was told the parts aren't interchangable - that contacts for a Yota starter won't work. I don't believe that for a minute, so if any of you guys can give me a good resource for the contacts I would greatly appreciate it. I could just tell the Yota guys that they're for an FZJ80 and be done w/it.... just wanna see what you guys have to say.
  6. LS, Thanks so much for all the info. It was pretty frustrating to be turned away time after time by all the "professional" installation folks. I've looked briefly through your notes and the sites that you recommended, and I think that's gonna be the way to go. I'll let you know how everything turns out, and if I have any more questions I'll post 'em here to see if you can help. Thanks.
  7. The kit SHOULD be easy to install, but the plugs on the kit are wrong. I bought the kit second-hand, so that's probably the start of my problems right there. And, believe it or not, I've taken it to 5 different shops - from cellular to car audio - and nobody will install the thing. I could wire it myself if I had the pin-out for the factory radio for my truck. Can anybody provide any help here?
  8. Nelson, How'd you hook up the Parrot handsfree? Is it into the factory head unit? I got one and can't seem to find an ISO wiring harness. Man, I don't want to get into hooking it wire to wire.
  9. Lexi98..... One word: shocks. When I bought my 96 LX450 it did the same thing. Bounced all over the freakin place. Flying through the interstate in New Orleans, all I could do was just hang on. Got new shocks, and all is right with the world. Fixed every bit of it.
  10. I know I've seen a couple of folks on here talking about their liking the Parrot bluetooth handsfree kits, specifically the 3000. I've got a '96 LX450 and the 3000 kit. My qstns: Did you install it yourself? And if you did, where did you get the adapters necessary to connect the kit w/the stock head unit?
  11. Thanks for the info, DJ. B/t what you've said here and the other discussion you posted, it sounds like that might just be my problem. I at first thought starter problems, but it just wasn't quite cosistent w/other starter problems I've had w/older vehicles. And I didn't want to get into searching blindly for the problem. I figured somebody on here would've had a similar experience. Thanks, again for the info.
  12. More and more frequently, when I attempt to crank my LX450 absolutely nothing happens. There is power... all electronics work fine. The motor just doesn't attempt to turn over at all. It's not a dead battery. If I turn the key several times, it'll eventually crank right up as normal, but I may have 5 or 6 attempts with nothing. Sometimes it'll give a quick turn and simply stop. It's like the key's not connected to anything at all, and then all of a sudden it cranks. Anybody have a clue what this might be and what I might be looking at in repairs? And any help on the steering wheel post I made below would be greatly appreciated.
  13. My leather steering wheel is in terrible shape. I'd love to replace it with a wood/leather wheel, but can't find one anywhere. Any suggestions on where to look? No one locally refurbishes, so I have to look elsewhere. I can get one from a 2001 LX470... anybody know if that'll fit my '96 450? I know some of you guys have used American Stitches... were you happy with their work?
  14. I went from an Infiniti with a Bose system to my '96 LX 450 with the Lexus Premium Sound system and was greatly disappointed in the lack of quality - not in the truck, I love the 450 just not the audio system. Virtually no bass and even distortion in the highs and mids. I'm not wanting to blow the doors off, so I looked into just replacing the speakers throughout and was told that because of the way Lexus builds their audio you can't do that. It's all or nothing. Is that true? Or has anyone else figured out a way to replace just speakers? What's the deal here?
