  1. Those of you with the 6 speed automatic, how does the manual mode work with the paddle shifters? I mean are you in complete control of the car in manual mode? All input would appreciated.

I haven't read all the responses to this post yet, but just wanted to say that I tried using the paddle shifters for a while. I find it's easier to just use the automatic and put your foot into the accelerator.

I’ve tested it out a few times. It seems like the car will give you the freedom to rev out the gears before you shift but once you shift, the shifts feel laggy. Its not an instant response unlike the BMW SMG gear box which gives you total control with 5 different sport modes and the trans reacts precise with no sign of lag. Its not something i will be using often but when I feel the need to take a spirited drive, I will be sure to use it as it does give you a pretty good sense of control.

How is that SMG transmission as far as reliability goes? Man, I'd hate to see what a replacement costs...

I haven't really used it at all. Our car only has a couple hundred miles on it though.

Never really heard any problems with them, they do come out with upgrades now and again. All you have to do is go to BMW and they re-flash the trans ecu with the new program. The Farrari F1 is the most advanced auto-stick on the planet, they say BMW is like the second.

My husband had the biggest problem with our M3 SMG. He couldn't figure out how to drive it. I, however, had no problems with it. It could be a little quirky, but it was cool.

  2. I have an IS250, with 18,000 miles on it. It has the smell of eggs coming from the car. I've taken it to the dealer, and I think even mentioned it in this Web site before, when the car was still new. I was told it should wear off, that it's just a new-car smell. Well, after 18,000 miles, shouldn't the smell be gone? Lexus can't diagnose it until they actually smell it, and it, of course, won't do it when I'm at the dealer......

  3. Hey, my friend got his car tinted today....The Job looks phenominal, but some things just didn't quite seem normal to me: He comes to the house and does it by hand (he's been in buissness 18 years, so that's not even the strangest part) but he said that the tint will bubble because the water needs to evaporate and he said the bubbles will go away, is that normal? And he also said not to roll the windows down for five days, is that normal as well? He charged my friend 137, something along those lines. He gave him a lifetime warrenty though, not from him but from the company who manufacutres the tint. The tint was premium charcoal, 18% percent or something (he said that was the darkest you could go in FL is that true?) SO I was wondering is that stuff that he said true? I think it would be best that if I get it done to go to a store, like tint world, don't you guys agree?

I had somebody come out to my home several times to tint my car windows. However, he no longer does home-visits. He now has his own shop. Yes, don't roll down the windows for a few days. I've not heard of the bubbling.

  4. Does anybody who has an IS350 or IS250 has a rattling noise when they first start up the car for about 3-4 seconds? It sounds like it's from somewhere deep inside the dash board on the driver side or somewhere around there in the engine compartment. It's hard to tell. I have to close my door, turn off the radio, and roll up the window to hear this.

    Haven't had that experience.

  5. Keep in mind that the ML system you heard most likely had very few hours on it. Just like home audio components, especially the speakers, they need to be run in before they sound their best.

Get 100 hours on the stock system before you give up on it.

Personally, I like the stock system in my 250. I like it better than my BMW 325.

  6. Hey Iam taking my IS 350 to the dealer tommrow to get the seatbelt's fixed....And I asked them to check that cracking noise (the one that sounds like stones hitting the hood) But the thing is I can't control when it comes, so I was wodnering if any of you have fiqured out what it was so I could tell them, or if anyone has narrowed it down to where it's coming from exactly so that way I can tell them what to check....So does anyone know? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've complained about numerous things, to which the dealership can never find it when I take my car in. Oh, the last one, I told them when I had recirc on, I could still smell exhaust coming in the car. The service tech told them to check the a/c, that exhaust from my car was coming in. Oy. I guess I should've explained myself better.

Anyways, I had complained about the sound of rocks hitting the windshield, whatever. They say they'd have to take the whole dash apart to find it. I told them forget it. I just live with the sound. Sorry, not much help!

  7. OTOH if low mileage is due to many short trips and not much highway driving, it would be considered severe service and should be on the lower mileage/time schedule. Cars that never get fully warmed up, sit around alot, etc can still have contaminant build up, moisture, etc in the oil, which may be more detrimental than lots of highway miles. I go by the 6 months service always if I don't get the miles. It isn't expensive and it's good "insurance". You don't have to pay Lexus prices just for oil and filter changes. I think it's especially important if this is your first service since breaking in your motor.

I have 17,000 miles on my car, and I've only had it 9 months. I do what Lexus suggests..........

  8. I have an IS250. My average mpg is about 26.8. When I decided to try and drive it slow for one tank, I got 32 mpg on that tank. But I couldn't stay at 60.........I had to drive!!!! lol.

My wife and I bought an IS250 last weekend and when I filled up yesterday we drove 288 miles on 12 gallons of gas. That equates to 24 mpg, and I've been romping on it a bit when I've driven it. All city driving with no prolonged highway stints. I'm thinking the IS250 might be the luxury eco friendly car of the year.

I live in the O.C. and work in Long Beach. I drive at the best time! 3am to work and 12 noon home! I get very little traffic on the freeway and I keep it at 75-80 MPH round trip is close to 75 miles!

    I average between 23 to 25.5 MPG!

I drive from Claremont to Riverside every day 30 miles one-way, and always have traffic. I thought I was getting bad gas mileage with the 26.8 average I'm at right now.........

  9. I live in Southern California. Claremont, to be exact. I work in Riverside.

    I am a court reporter.

I have had my Lexus IS250 since August '05. My husband drives an E-55 AMG, Mercedes. We also have a third car, if you can tell by my id name........

Like the topic says, just wanted to get an idea what you IS guys and gals do for a living, where your from, and what other cars you drive besides the Lex.

I’m from Nutley, New Jersey been here almost my entire life, aside from some 7 yrs in Florida.

I’m a Financial Specialist for the 4th largest bank in the US.

I’ve had my Lex for 2 months now, its my first one :D I also have a 06 Acura TL (my g/f and I)

By the way im Vito. :)

  10. LAMBOBABY,

FYI, a regular bra will scratch your paint if not careful, that is just as bad as rock chips. The bra will actually wear the paint right off. This is another enlighting fact about paint repairing. My son's friend ran his bike down the front fender deep enough to need the fender repainted professionally. The estimate is $1,200.00. I'll gladly clear bra the front for $650 than pay 2k to paint the front end in 18 months.

I know a regular bra can scratch a car, Toby. Thus the reason to keep the car clean.............

    Sorry about your fender.

  11. I am convinced. Made an appointment for the xpel guy to come out and have the clear protection put on my car. Included is...hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors.. $650.00. Materials are genuine 3m scotchguard products

www.xpel.com put in your zip, most come right to your house to do the work.

I have been telling EVERYONE that my car is a rock magnet. The first week I had it, got a rock in the windshield that I had to take to get fixed because, of course, the car was too new for a new windshield. Last week I had a rock hit my SIDE window and scratch it. That won't come out. I have chips on the front as well.

Anyway, I'm not really happy that Lexus decided not to make a regular bra for this car. I would've bought it instantly. It just seems that $650 is a heck of a lot of money to spend........

  12. I have come to actually enjoy my car. It just took me so long to get used to it after coming out of my BMW 325i. I now have owned my is250 since August and have 11,000 miles on it. Yes, I'm a mileage hog.

Anyways, anyone notice a popping noise coming out of their dash? It can be so loud that I think a rock is hitting my windshield. I've asked my tech about it, and don't really want to attempt to get into the dash for fear of it not getting put back together correctly........

  13. Huh?

    Huh what?

Huy, as in, what are you talking about? Perhaps some more details as to hos this handle caused accident or injury.

It hasn't caused injury. I'm worried about in the future, if I'm in a car accident, and somebody is holding onto it, and it doesn't hold then........it's been fixed as of today.

  14. I have a brand new IS350 and have noticed a few problems. This is my first Lexus and I'm somewhat disappointed that I'm already experiencing some rattles and buzzing sounds in the dashboard. It's hard to figure out where exactly but it's the front left and right side.

I've also noticed the notorious problems that BMW used to have with the front wheels turning black. I assume this is break dust. I'm experiencing the same thing. I clean the wheels on the weekend and by Tuesday/Wednesday they are completely black.

Anyone else have similar problems/issues with the IS350?

    thanks

I have an IS250, and the brake dust is acceptable. I'm used to BMW as well, I guess. However, the rattles are driving me nuts in this car. I've got one in the seatbelt area on the passenger side. And, yes, the rearview mirror vibrates when I play my music too loud. But so far, the engine is holding up great (10,000 miles almost already). Lexus has been great as far as service.

One question: should the overhead hand-holder thing have come off when my husband was pulling on it?? He was just moving around in the car, using it to adjust, and it half came out of the roof of the car! Lexus has the part on order, but it seems to be a safety issue to me. Should I be concerned? Now I have to take it in as well due to the recall of the accelerator pedal.........

LOL! im pretty sure that should not have come off. it was not properly installed im guessing. Are you talking about the handle above every window?i wouldnt say its a safety condition since those things are not that heavy. lol im pretty sure it wont fall down on itself and land on your head and cause you to faint, thus resulting in loss of control of the car etc. lol

"Safety issue," as in my husband was using the handle in his Mercedes Benz when I crashed into someone at 40 mph, and it held. Yes, the handle above each door is what I'm talking about.
