  1. ahem... from a thread i have over on ClubLexus. and you don't HAVE to remove the whole housing unless you are talkinga bout the one on the C-Pillar.
  2. Lexus never sold Manual CDs, only the hard copy books. (softcover) i know, i have one :P
  3. LOL i have dexron 3 with lube gaurd in it and have had it in there for 3 years...just got back from a 1400 mile trip....although type 4 is recommended by everyone here and im not telling u not to use it....but if u have dexron in it it will not cause the problems u r having.... I just checked with Toyota shop over the weekend and they said Dextron III was fine for my 1990 LS400 in fact they were going to sell me Toyota brand Dextron III. So other than using a newer formula synthetic the Dextron III should be fine for the first gen transmissions. your mechanic is an idiot and will destroy your transmission. the in the 1,2,3 series LS (that's 89-06) all use the current Toyota Type-IV Transmission Fluid. the earlier models may have originally been shipped with T-II fluid, but the Type-IV fluid is the successor to that and 100% backwards compatible. Straight Dexron (Note, DexRON, not dexTron) will cause the trans to slip and not function properly.
  4. having thoroughly driven a couple 1st gen cars, with both single and dual piston calipers, then driving my LS again... 1LS Brakes just plain out Suck. :chairshot: the 4pots are in a whole different league of braking power. oh, and to the poster who suggested SS lines, they don't actually IMPROVE your braking POWER, all they do is improve pedal feel, but even then, will not make it any more firmer than the original (aka OEM) ones will if they were New. save your money, go 4piston.
  5. Thanks for that. I can get a pair of 2000 LS400 calipers on EBay for 250. I know I need to get the rotors that match that year or year series. I know Lexus upgraded the brakes in 1993 but are the brakes from 1993 same for subsequent years or did Lexus do another upgrade and change mounting holes, rotor sizes, master cylinder configuration, ABS computer, valving etc.... in any year after 1995. I assumed that LS 400 93-95 would be a bolt on to the LS400 90-92 years, but are the brakes from 1996-2000 also bolt on to LS 400 1990-92? The Supra TT's are too expensive for me, and I'm looking to upgrade for enhanced safety as my kids will be using the car. Thanks for any specific info and guidance. lexus changed the brake pattern in 06 with the 3GS series and earlier with the 2IS. also, the LS430 uses different bolt pattern for the calipers, so those are out as well. basically, the 95+ 4pots will fit, BUT you will need to either shave down a ball joint bolt or get some roll center adjusters (RCAs) to move them out of the way (has the added benefit of correcting camber on lowered cars and lowering the car a tiny bit further as well) problem is that RCAs are ~$400-600 from japan or ~$300 in the US IF you can find them. both the 1LS and 1,2GS have to this problem. The GS guys get cheap RCAs from several sources but they don't swap into the LS. supposedly using 95+ lower balljoints solves this issue on the 1LS. also, TT brakes don't have this problem at all. the 2LS calipers are actually thicker than the TT since the TT are either all steel or half steel half alum and the 2LS is a 100% aluminum 2pc caliper. thanks for that, I'm trying to figure this all out before I spend on any parts. I checked the part numbers online late last night and the steering knuckle is the same from 1990 to 2000 so I figured the 1995-2000 calipers would fit, but didn't realize they would touch the ball joint, and hadn't known about the roll center adjusters. it may be easier to use the 95+ ball joints as you suggest. Regards, Ed yep, any 95+ lower ball joint set will work fine. the early cars have a step in the balljoints that foul the larger calipers. the later ones will make a difference (slight) to the alignment so make sure to get an alignment afterwards.
  6. sorry, hadn't noticed that you were in Canada. the US market 1st gens didn't have any DRL at all, and in later lexus model, incl. my '99 the DRL were generally separate from the low beams.

  8. Can you send me a URL that shows how to connect an Ipod to a stock radio? Do you just use a FM transmitter or is there a way to hardwire it? I'm thinking of installing XM radio in my 02 LS430 but there isn't a Aux option on my radio. If they use a transmitter won't the quality be degraded? I tried searching the thread for XM but the search tool wouldn't let me... you mean this? http://clublexus.com/forums/lexus-audio-vi...oem-stereo.html though, for your LS430 i'd recco just picking up a vaistech plug 'n play aux. adapter.
  9. really, ,then why did Lexus offer the later LS430's with 18s standard? it's not wheel size as much as it is tire size and quality. The original poster does not drive an LS 430. His LS 400 came with 16" wheels...what it's suspension was designed for. If the suspension of the LS 400 could handle bigger wheels without an adverse effect on ride quality, I'm sure they would have been offered. The LS 430 is not the same car. actually, if you'll note, there is no significant difference int he geometry nor construction of the 2LS vs. LS430 suspension. the reason Lexus didn't offer 18"s at that time was because in the 90's wheels >17" were still mostly reserved for high end sports cars and the like. the GS even only got 17s because the production/tire cost was high and required too much retooling.
  10. DRL is never equal to low beams. you didnt mention exactly what year you had, the 89-92 are known to be worse than average. the later 93-94 used an improved headlight using H4 bulbs and not the stupid useless bulbs in the earlier ones. hey jcrome :P It's a 1991. I've actually upgraded the Headlight unit to a JDM 1 peice (H4 bulb). Time to start troubleshooting. Anyone have any ideas? I'll start with relays and fuses, but perhaps someone else has hit this snag before. Thanks again guys! what bulbs are you running? check the aim, if it is too high then you won't have nearly has much usable light. 9posts ehh...
  11. even if they made a difference, think how much of a substantial difference they would have to make to be WORTH $25/each $25x8=$200 BEFORE you buy some wires/ignitors/caps/rotors to complete it. these cars are cruisers, squeezing at most 5-10hp out of a car that weighs ~2tons won't make it a sports car ;) Hey SK
  12. been there done that :P front: model specific, 95-97, 98-00, and earlier are NOT interchangeable amongst eachother. Rear: 95-97 and 98-00 CAN interchange, but not with earlier models.
  13. not worth it at all, the OEM Lexus cats on the LS400 are of Metal Substrate construction, which is EXTREMELY expensive to produce and also the highest flowing type. this is why the OEM cats are so damn expensive. new OEM LS cats will match or outflow most similar diameter "High Flow" cats.
  14. really, ,then why did Lexus offer the later LS430's with 18s standard? it's not wheel size as much as it is tire size and quality. none of that is true for WHEELS, tires yes, but not wheels. the reason they say use FWD on fwd and rwd on rwd is because of the differences in offsets, which is severely outdated since most common lexus wheels have rather high offsets (>+40) which is normally common on old FWD cars. OP-the RX 18"s will NOT fit on your car as they will not even come close to clearing the big brakes present on the 95+ LS400. a better alternative would be the 06+ GS350/430/460 18" wheels or LS430 18"s as they will clear no problem.
  15. no LS400 pre 97 had an actual engine immobilizer from the factory. most likely, either the battery and/or the alternator is dead. the ALARM may have killed the motor since it was tripped but based on my experiences with the old '95 i had i doubt it. check ur fuses.

  17. just wanted to point out, the 95-97 are indeed INTERFERENCE motors. lexus changed the head design for 95 (hence the tiny hp increase) and made the motor interference. 98-00 are also interference all 89-94 are non-interference.
  18. I've finally got back to the car. I've checked the hoses repeatedly, and they both are extremely hot. I changed the cabin temp sensor, and still no heat. Lets see, I've replaced the thermostat twice, cleaned the heater valve twice, replaced all hoses (plus blew everything out), flushed the system and refilled twice (because I'm clumsy), burped the system I don't know how many times, removed, checked, and replaced all fuses and relays. changed the cabin temp sensor, checked for error codes, and still no heat. I've got the dash in shambles just checking wiring, from what I CAN see, everything on the controls seem to be working ok. SOOOOOOOOOOO I guess I'm going to have to send it in to have it diagnosed. It's snowing here today so driving with NO heat was a bit contrary to good sense. Maybe one day, the problem will be solved. Thanks again for ALL suggestions. Keep'em coming because I've got to wait until I've got the money to send it in, and with it being Christmas, that may be a while. Again, I really do appreciate any and all ideas. THANK YOU! put the temp on max, warm the car up, fan on max. bring the RPM up to about 4000-4500 and hold it there. hot air? if so, you either have a bubble in the system, a leak somewhere (i had one that was TINY), a dead thermostat, or all of the above.
  19. very nice... post it up on CL now :P
