  1. If you are getting close to 90k miles the whinning on your rx300 is probably the transmission....there is a problem with the screen filters clogging.....the dealer can take care of this for you for about 300 bucks you may find a service center cheaper....make sure they flush your trans completely it takes 15 qts of toyota type IV fluid and you may want to try what I used for 30 bucks I added TRANSMATIC it thins the fluid and helps it get to the torque converter and clutches to help prevent these parts from creating shavings that clog the screen. Usually you will start to see the transmission begin to act like it is in neutral when you have it in drive or reverse also when this starts you will need to turn the vehicle off for a few minutes let it set and start it back up and plan to get it to a service center soon this is typical of a clogged filter.... good luck] roanokebarry
  2. To Teslex The transmission problems you are having with your rx300 seems to be all to common....you did not list the symptoms or problems of the transmission..... I have a 99 rx300 awd it now has 110k on it but at the 80k mark I began having transmission trouble I was told the same as you 4500 to5000 dollars to replace it .....I thought this is rediculous for this vehicle this is a Lexus the transmission shud never give us this kind of problem... after a lot a research and trying a few different avenues this is what I found.... If your symptoms are neutralizing, it is in drive or reverse yet acts like it is in neutral..... most likely the screen filter is clogged......if you dont mind getting under you vehicle and getting alittle dirty you can drop your own fluid and clean the screen yourself and replace with new fluid....note the dealer charges about 300 dollars to do this they will also flush out all the old fluid which is about 15 qts......when I did this it was good for about 8 to 10 thousand miles and my rx started doing the same thing again....what was happening is the metal clutches were not getting the proper lubrication and the torque converter was not either.....so I had the dealer flush the transmission again and clean the screen filter and this time when I had them replace the fluid I added a product called TRANSMATIC this product thins the transmission fluid to help it get to the critical parts it should. So far I must say my transmission shifts like it was new..... Now I admit we should never have had this problem until after many more miles but we have it and I hope this helps you and others out there....good luck.. roanokebarry
  3. To FobinTX When you say your transmission failed what is it doing....what are the symptoms....does it act like it is in neutral when you have it in reverse or drive????? does it clunk when you put it in gear..... If you had the transmission fluid changed and flushed regularly check the color of the fluid is it redish looking or does it look brown or black....... You also may need to have the screen cleaned...these transmissions do not have a filter persay they do have a screen that will get clogged from time to time.....usually it starts after the warranty is out around 80k but it all depends on your driving habits..... Unless you have damaged your tranny....and you have the sypmtoms I mentioned above you have what is called an enternal problem...most shops want 2500 to 4500 to pull tranny...this may not be needed....if you flush all the transmission fluid out and it is about 15 qts clean screen and replace with new fluid type IV your transmission should be ok.....I have used a new product called Transmatic....it thins the fluid so it can better get to all the critical parts.... my RX has never shifted better...it is smoother in shifts and I have 110k on my 99 RX... Whatever you do good luck ....but if this will save you from big tranny expense its worth the try... roanokebarry
  4. Monarch and RX in NC You both are correct....I always have had my dealer service my 99RX if you check the manual and according to the service tech the fluid in the transmission should be changed every 30k and on the 2001 RX it actually says that you never have to change it.....lets get real.. I know they have now sent out an update to this and it is recommended every 15k....all that aside I want to try to help anyone (and it seems like we have alot) out there that is currently having problems to see how we can help them... The slipping and hard shifting and just not working transmission on the RX300 and RX330 is from a design flaw just as RX in NC states but we can use a product that I have found that helps tremendously and extends the life of our transmissions it is called TRANSMATIC and no I do not work for them or sell for them I only purchased and use the product. It costs about 30 bucks and is avail by just typing transmatic on google. I put it in my RX in December and for the first time since I can remember the transmission shifts properly and performance I was not expecting. The problem with the design of this transmission is getting and keeping fluid to the clutches and torque converter to keep it from failing. When fluid does not get to these points the metal rubs against the moving parts and thus shavings gather in the metal screen called the filter. This robs the transmission again of proper lubrication and so the transmission neutralizes...it shuts down. If you take your vehicle to a dealer or a transmission shop more than likely they will tell you "its internal" no kidding......if you flush your fluid and clean the screen filter and add a pint of TRANSMATIC you should really see a difference. Again I am only trying to help....I dont think any of us should have ever had this problem to begin with but we do and we have to handle it.... I now have 110k on my RX If I had listened to the dealer at 80k when I first had the problem It would have cost me 5 grand and my warranty would be gone as it is I have spent 300 to flush my transmission and clean the screen and 30 bucks for the Transmatic... so I ask who is the fool.? good luck roanokebarry
  5. To all RX300 and RX330 owners...In reply to RXinNC's comments I agree totally if your vehicle is still under warranty follow all the instructions in the manual and the dealers recommendations, but most of the RX300's are now past the 70k mile warranty period unless you purchased extended warrantys and I have experienced personally the dealer here not wanting to fix the transmission only to replace it. I personally think when you pay 40k for a Lexus the transmission should not even be an issue of a problem until maybe 200k miles or more....instead we are all having problems at 80 or 90 thousand miles just as the warranty is over.. I am only offering a possible solution to a problem that should not exist in the first place. My transmission in my RX300 AWD has now 110k on it when I first began to have problems at 80k or so the only dealer answer was replace the trans at a cost of 5 thousand or so... if I took it to a transmission shop the price for repair was anywhere from 2500 to 3000 with a 6 month 6000 mile warr. ... the problems I experienced was the screen filter clogging and the fluid was not getting to the areas to lubricate the transmission properly therefore the neutralizing kicked in and I was stuck. For all the owners out there that have had similar problems or if your RX lags in shifting or has hard shifts then you can purchase a product that will help and that is TRANSMATIC... Now if you are worried about voiding your warranty dont use it....but I have to ask how would the dealer be able to tell...it does not change the color of the transmission fluid... and if it works and you dont have to replace the transmission you are dollars ahead......if you just want a new transmission buy it....5 grand if you want to repair what you have repair it 3grand...if you want to try an additive that just might work 30 bucks... duh ...this is a tough decission. Good luck to all of you and hope whatever you do your RX will continue to perform properly..lets face it none of us should even have to have this problem with the transmission in the first place with this quality of a vehicle but we are experiencing it and I hope you all make the right decision. roanokebarry
  6. bObo Ive been there and done that....the main problem it seems with the RX300 and RX330 transmissions is getting the fluid to the points that need it...I receintly tried the product TRANSMATIC and it has made a world of difference in the way my RX300 shifts and performs....I have 109k on my vehicle and at 80k or so the dealer said it needed a new transmission....the problem was the screen filter was clogged..and what was clogging it was shavings from the clutches and parts of the transmission that were not getting the lubrication that it needed. Transmatic costs about 30 bucks and to me it has been a blessing...I have recommeded it to friends that used it in Hondas and american cars and they cant believe how it helps the shifting and performance. anyway good luck roanokebarry
  7. Congratulations......if you are approaching 80k miles be sure to watch for transmission problems.....change the fluid every 15k miles ..have the screen cleaned and only use the correct fluid for the Lexus......you may also want to try the treatment called TRANSMATIC... you will want to add this when you put new fluid in.... Good Luck roanokebarry
  8. I have a 1999 RX300 and have experienced transmission problems over the past 2 years and I think I have discovered a product that will help most of us. My problem started at about 88k miles I noticed that when I put it in reverse sometimes it acted like it was in neutral....this progressively got worse. Eventually as I would drive along it would stop, not engage the transmission....this was caused from the transmission fluid not getting to the torque converter or clutches and therefore as a protection of the transmission it more or less shuts down. If you take it to your dealer they of course want to replace the transmission at a cost of about 5 grand.... The screen filter needs cleaning.... and have them flush out the old fluid in the transmission...this should cost about 300 dollars.....I have also discovered that you need to do this every 15k miles and I found that there is a product on the market called TRANSMATIC it cost about 30 bucks but since I put it in my vehicle back in December my transmission does not have that lag between shifts, when put in drive it pulls the vehicle forward, it just changes gears like it should have when it was new. The transmatic thins the fluid so it gets to all the parts that need to be lubricated. Hey what do you have to loose, 30 bucks.... or pay out 5 grand.... Your dealer may say that this wont be a permanent fix, but of course he does want your 5 grand..... good luck roanokebarry
