Temporary Fix For Minor Steering Rack Leak?
yucaton_tom replied to prix's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
I agree on the Lucas additive: it is about $6 a bottle at O'reilly's here in Houston, but you will notice instant improvement. They offer a money back guarantee after using two bottles of it - I was skeptical even though it slowed down the leak right away. Now, at about 1.5 bottles being run through, I think the leak has stopped. What do you have to lose? Tom -
Want To Trade - Ls400 For Gs400
yucaton_tom replied to yucaton_tom's topic in 93 - 05 Lexus GS300 / GS400 / GS430
Anyone have a good 98 GS400 for trade or sale? -
Before going into details, I want to trade my 1 owner LS400 with cash diffference for a 98 or newer GS 400 My Car: 1993 LS 400 - 192K miles - one owner - all documents, receipts, records Silver with black interior Mobile 1 Synthetic and Toyota filter every 5K. Major work recently done - replace all 4 struts, rebuilt transmission, Tune up (both distributor caps, new spark plugs and wires). This car is excellent condition with wear normal for this kind of mileage. Main reason for trading - want a more compact body style - want to get a newer car, and willing to pay for the right deal - It must be the V8 GS400. I'm in Houston,TX but willing to travel anywhere for the right deal. I can always be reached at tomshort@houston.rr.com Thanks, Tom

yucaton_tom replied to SUPRAboy80's topic in 93 - 05 Lexus GS300 / GS400 / GS430
I just ordered the in cabin air filter for my L4 1993 from Irontoad.com for $36 - part# 8888-50010 + about $6 in freight. -
Can you guys tell me where to locate the cabin filter in my 93 L4. I looked all through the owners manual, and it doesn't even mention this. It has 190K, smells fine, but know it needs attention. Thanks, Tom

190k - Too Late To Go To Synthetic Oil?
yucaton_tom replied to yucaton_tom's topic in General Maintenance
Thanks for all your info Steviej - I haven't tried to find more of the -20004 filters since I have a stock, but are you saying they are no longer available at Toyota dealers? What filter are you using? -

190k - Too Late To Go To Synthetic Oil?
yucaton_tom replied to yucaton_tom's topic in General Maintenance
Well, I took the great feed back from you guys, and changed to Mobil 1 10W-30 green cap today. My 1993, 190K mile LS4 is already idling smoother - about 6000rpm at idle with the AC off! Incredible for a high mileage car - Truly a masterpiece in auto engineering! Steviej said it right "Sythetic oil does not cause leaks - it will sometimes uncover problem areas.......". I don't know about you, but if my LS has worn out seals, I want to know about - plan on going to 500K with this one! Just for the record, I used Toyota Filter 90915-20004. I bought a case of these about a year ago for my old 93 SC400 (sold) and 01 Tundra - all use the same filter. Great feedback guys! Thanks! -
I just replaced the air regulator valve assembly on my 93 LS400 - my mechanic cross referenced parts between Toyota and Lexus and found that the Toyota Tercel uses the same valve assembly - Part # 17630-16040 - $92.00 over the counter at Toyota in Houston, Texas. Good Luck!

190k - Too Late To Go To Synthetic Oil?
yucaton_tom replied to yucaton_tom's topic in General Maintenance
Thanks Blake - I am catching up to your 225K - isn't it incredible to have a car with this kind of mileage, and still be tight as new, and still fun to drive? I've probably owned thirty cars including a pristine BMW635, and the LS is my favorite. I am still debating using the High mileage 10W-30 or the viscosity you are using. Why did you choose the 5W over the 10W? -
Source For Trailing Arm (carriage) Bushings
yucaton_tom replied to wucantstop's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
Hello, I plan on looking into replacing the trailing arm bushings on my 93 LS400 - 190K miles. What are the benifits and costs involved? Thanks, Tom -
190k - Too Late To Go To Synthetic Oil?
yucaton_tom replied to yucaton_tom's topic in General Maintenance
Steviej, Thanks for the info - we kinda drifted away from the original subject. My LS has 190,000 miles - one owner and well cared for. With this kind of mileage do you still suggest the Mobil 1 High mileage formula? Which viscosity would you recommend? Thanks, Tom -
I also am considering changing to Mobil 1 Syn at 190K miles on my 93LS. What viscosity do you all recommend? Take into account this is Houston, Texas where it seldom gets below 40F. Summertime average is about 95F. Thanks

190k - Too Late To Go To Synthetic Oil?
yucaton_tom replied to yucaton_tom's topic in General Maintenance
Thanks for the comments guys - I'm in Houston, Texas (very hot). My 93 LS doesn't leak or burn any oil, and am seriously wanting to go with Mobil 1. I spoke to my very good mechanic about his opinion today and it was: His first choice - go with Castrol GTX 20W50 or next 10W40, but change every 3k miles. I am still seriously wanting to convert to Mobil 1 at 5K changes. What viscosity would you recommend for Southern US climate? Thanks again for your thoughts - the more you know about these LS models, the more you appreciate what a fine auto they are! Want to keep it a long time? Tom -
Hello, I know it's been covered, but would appreciate hearing about anyones experience in changing to synthetic oil at high mileage - in my case 190K on my 93 LS400. I guess my biggest concern would be that leaks can start that will not using regular motor oil. Thanks, Tom

I have the OEM wheels for sale from my 93 LS400 - make me a reasonable offer. I am in Houston, Texas 77055. Tom

Looking for a replacement two way speaker for front passenger door on my 93 LS400. It has the premium system, not the Nakamichi. Any aftermarket options would be appreciated. Have had good luck with Boston Accoustic, Infiniti, and Polk. thanks, tom

Hello, I am probably a year to late, but am in need of door speakers (front) for my 93 LS400. thanks Tom

Are there any tips on removal and changing of the two interior cabin air conditioning filters? There is nothing on this in the manual. I am wondering if this is only on the second generation LS.
-
My 93 LS400 is at 188K and I would really like to change to Mobile 1 at 5K oil change intervals. What viscosity should I use? Here in Houston it rarily gets below 40F . I am concerned with oil leaks developing. thanks, tom

Just inherited an LS400 from a relative with 190K miles. Excellent condition overall (all services done) but the transmission is in bad shape. From what relatives have told me it started slipping a few months ago, got worse and worse, to the point that you could not move it. Sounds like serious neglect! Monday I'm expecting my mechanic to tell me it needs a new one. I plan on keeping this car, so want to fix it right (for the next 190K). My options: - buy a rebuilt transmission from someone like www.rebuilt-auto-transmissions.com . They offer a great warranty. - locate a used transmission from salvage yard LS400. - open to any or your suggestions One question: In searching for a used trannie, what years of transmissions are interchangeable? I would like to get a low mileage unit, so a 1996 - 1998 would be ideal if it will fit. Thanks for your help.
