  1. See this page: http://www.lextreme.com/alternator.html Although it is entitled "How to replace Lexus LS400/SC400 alternator, it also has some good tips on how to test the charging system as well as including a simple circuit diagram. Note in the diagram that there are two fuses shown in the regulator circuit. You may have a bad one. FWIW, that page explains how to R and R the alternator from under the car. I was able to change the one in my 95 SC400 quite easily from the top and in less time. It was much easier and cleaner as well as faster. (The pulley that provides the tension for the serpentine belt must be removed in order to lift the alternator upwards and out of the engine compartment. One bolt holds the pulley on, but be aware that it is backwards threaded.) Here are the steps: Disconnect battery Remove belt by relieving tension (14mm socket) Remove tensioner pulley (IMPORTANT--backwards thread) (14mm socket) Remove alternator top nut (from stud) and then lower retaining bolt (14mm socket) Move bracket that holds transmission cooling lines out of the way Slide alternator forward off of stud Turn it to get access to wiring, removing both connectors. (13mm box wrench and small flat bladed screwdriver) Lift alternator towards center of car and up, turning as necessary. Reverse process to reinstall. It can be done in well under an hour. (FWIW, I'm tall and bending over and lifting at the same time [i'm also old!] was difficult so I jacked up the right side a bit to make the connections easier to reach, but I did not try to access anything from under the car) John
  2. I need a driver's side arm rest, the one in the door panel. Please pm me if available
  3. Thanks so much. Local dealer had one. A little higher in price, $49.95, but they're close by and the item is in stock. J
  4. At the beginning of this year (08) I had to drive round trip through some serious cattle farm country every day for about two months. The odor was horrible and some of it still lingers in the car. Most was in the trunk liner so after trying some ineffective remedies it now it stinks like bad perfume. I have a solution for that, but I still get the awful cowpoop odor from the AC system. It's fine with just the fresh air vents on, but when I turn on the AC compressor, the stink begins. So my question is, isn't there a charcoal filter or a filter of any sort that I can get at and clean or replace to rid my otherwise cool ride of the smell? If so, where is it? Is it expensive to replace (am retired, fixed income)? Or can I just wash it? I guess the biggest question is, is there a filter and can I clean it? Thanks, John
  5. 95 SC4. Same problem here. I even removed the throttle body to make sure I got all parts of it really clean. No difference. In addition to plugs and replacing some hoses to eliminate leaks, I also replaced the fuel filter and PCV valve. Had it put on a computer at a dealer. They said that the O2 sensors were 'a little slow', but couldn't assure me that changing them (about $900) would fix it. Another dealer told me that it was a typical issue with 95s. They said that 95 was the first year of drive by wire and they didn't get some things exactly right. They suggested replacing the TPS, (throttle position sensor), another expensive part. Again, they couldn't assure me that it would be a total fix. I wonder about the EGR valve, but have not yet removed it to inspect it. Along with the 40mph surge, I also get hesitation when accelerating normally from a dead stop. I don't get it under hard acceleration. It makes me dislike this car.
  6. Yes, just solved this yesterday. There is a fusable link right at where the power connects to the lighter socket. You need to remove the top of the console to get to it. Then look carefully at the small piece of wire (about a half inch) that runs from the center connector post to a crimped connector that actually makes the connection to the lighter itself. There is a thin fiber washer separating the two sections to isolate them. On mine the link looked okay, but I removed the fiber washer and it works now. Now my radar detector has power...
  7. NEVER MIND! Sorry, but I can't see a way to delete this post. It's okay now. Some dumb guy (me) installled the motor backwards so it ran in reverse. So cancell all of the below. ================================= I just installed a new mast in my 95 SC400. The plastic leader was broken completely off. No big deal, I had to do it before on an LS400 I used to own. But now, the antenna retracts when I turn the radio on and it extends when I turn it off. It functions completely backwards! I've tried removing and reseating all the power plugs, but that didn't do it. Also tried removing the shaft and feeding it in again, but when I try to feed it, the motor is definitely driving it in the opposite direction of what I need it to do. I.E., when I power down it tries to push the mast up. It's like the polarity is reversed somewhere. I am sure the plugs are connected properly (they only go one way)
