Last year I had the pleasure (exagerrated) of replacing the starter on my 1996 LS400. It turned out that my EGR tube was damaged as well. I can tell you that I did not have to drop the tranny and/or the CAT. Obviously you will have to remove the front passenger tire. I had enough room to loosen the two bolts on the bottom of the EGR tube. I sprayed Liquid Wrench on the bolts and waited about 30 minutes before attempting it. I managed to reach the bolts by working my right hand from the front area of the EGR tube. I then used a deep well socket to loosen the bolts. Actually it was mor difficult to loosen the top bolts because the firewell is so close. I then fed the new tube from the top. You may have to wiggle it a bit but you will get it. I was amazed at how easy it was. On my first attempt, I attempted to loosen the CAT and it wasn't pretty. The bolts are not easy to break. Thank God I took a break. I could have created some unnecessary damage. Just take your time. Hope this helps.

I have a 1996 LS400 and I also made the mistake of replacing my original struts with the KYB GR-2 strut. The ride is hard as well as bouncy. I have been researching the Strutmasters and Arnott conversion kits. Basically, you would be replacing the strut as well as the spring. Although the price is not bad (these companies sell their product on E-bay for less), I have yet to confirm the ride quality (do these kits produce the Lexus 'smooth' ride). If anyone has any feedback regarding this issue, I would greatly appreciate it if you can share with us. FYI - KYB makes oem struts for Lexus. Unfortunately it is not the GR-2.

I have a 1996 LS400 as well. Can someone please tell me if I will need a special socket to remove the caliper bolts? I was under my car (draining the coolant) and I noticed that the caliper bolts have a star-pattern head. The head appears to be round and the inside is the form of a star-like pattern. Am I looking at the caliper bolt or something else. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I recently changed the battery in my '96 LS400 (118k miles). A few days later I noticed that my temperature gauge would move just above the "C". The normal position of the needle is 2 lines above the "C". I replaced the radiator cap (as advised in previous posts). The coolant level was a little low so I added some distilled water. I even checked the HTR fuse located near the parking brake release. No luck with any of these fixes. I know the gauge works because when I start the car in the morning the gauge is below the "C". The reason I mention the battery change is because I am wondering if I touched anything, near the battery, that has to do with the gauge. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I recently replaced rotors and pads on my 96 LS400. I used cross-drilled & slotted rotors and oem ceramic pads. When applying the brakes I am hearing a humming noise from the passenger-front brake. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Would it be okay to Seafoam the oil first and then follow-up with the brake booster method in a couple of weeks? I am waiting for my new ignition wires/plugs. In the meantime my oil is due for a change. Thanks for everyone's response. I really appreciate it.

Your information is invaluable. I have a 1996 LS400. I would like to do a full tune-up (Distributor Caps & Rotors, Fuel Filter, Plugs & Wires). Regarding the ignition wires, would you recommend that I purchase original Lexus wires (Part No. 9091922379 for $121 @ Park Place Lexus) or aftermarket OEM wires (ProSpark OEM replacement wires for $69 on Ebay)?
