  1. Check and clean your battery terminals maybe replace the negative, make sure you have your battery tested. Replace your fuel filter it will never hurt to do so. If the problem continues you will need to see if you can test the starter. Use 93 octane plus gas in it. Make sure you have the recommended engine oil in the car for the temperatures in your country, and clean all your ignition plugs with electrical car parts cleaner. Last make sure you stay on the ignition swicth the time is necessary sometimes we baby this cars too much and retract the key before we give time to the engine to start. My two cents. CPR
  2. You need to replace the packings or O rings in the valve lifters, it should not be a super expensive job and while a it check engine compression just in case. Toyota uses those o rings in the valve lifters to prevent the smoking, also you may want to do a valve job if you want to do a complet job. Also it could be the valve in the PS Pump, but your PS fluid should be getting burned if that is the case. Maybe your valve guides are bent and do not seal properly. CPR
  3. HI; The sensor I do not know what it is and other members will address it soon enough, but the starter thing is real and is going out of business. They are couple of ways to fix it. The dealer about a 1000.00, an independant about 500.00 and your self about 300.00 or less. If you are not the the mechanic type go with the second. If I were you I would start reading on what you need in the parts department and start choosing between a rebuild, a new part from Lexus or a replacement; they can be obtained as cheap as 200.00 at Advance Auto and others. You want to put the best part possible because of the hard-to-get procedure to replace the said part. If you are thinking on an after market part, get one with lifetime warranty that way if it breaks before its time you only have to worry about taking it out. Nicodenso replacements have been said to be of pretty good quality. I would get one the is exactly as the OEM, that way no cables or mods have to be performed. Call the dealer and see what they quote, or try a Toyota dealer and compare it, it should be close to an Avalon, (but not quite), so they should know how to do it. CPR
  4. You need to check your PS fluid quantity in cold and hot settings. If the fluid is good, then you need to bleed the air out of the system, if that results good, then you need to also check or replace your engine acessory betl, the one that runs the pump and electrica gen etc. If none of these are then you need to rebuild/replace your PS PUMP. I understand that to bleed the air out all you need to do is loose the cap and start the car and move the wheels from side to side people say as much as 50 times but it should not take that long. Then the cap needs to be closed before you go drive. But it is very likely you need a new pump. When you replace the fluid put mobil 1 synthetic is the best. Need to check your rack is probably bad too, so it will be a good time to have it rebuild replaced if you want to keep the car if not just deal with the PS for now. CPR
  5. I am in total agreement with the above poster. The 01 had some issues. Just look the tsbs on the car and you will see. I have a 1998 and have no complaint great cars. The problems the 98 has are wear and tear after ten years on the road. I would buy a 2004 if the fuel pump tsb has been fixed or is not applicable or the 98-2000 which are bulletproof cars by all accounts. The 2001 I would buy it if it has low price, miles and an impeccable maintenance record to go with. I would pay no more than 9,000.00 for a 2001. If they want 15, or 20 thousand they are just trying to pull a fast one. But as usual there are others that would disagree and you need to see the reasons they have to validate their claims, mine are problems reflected on investigations I made on the net. CPR
  6. Replace the old battery is going to cost you more in the long run. CPR
  7. My two cents: It is like everything in life, you have to gain some respect and respect at the same time. But once you let the members understand the reasons why we are here, because we love our cars, usually everything is just fine again! To the new members use the search feature, use the knowledge articles, if after looking all of it,nothing makes sense, shoot with the question, somehow, somewhere we will find an answer, or you will find it at the end for all of us. I mod my exhaust system making it a double pipe and the car feels great. I would encourge everyone to do so if possible, the engine in my humble opinion, if it was going to last 300,000 miles now it can go for 600,000 miles with the drop of pressure. Cannot say the same for the gaskets that have become brittle. CPR
  8. Just see the attachment. You will get the info you need. I would either try to find out if there is another Toyota product that uses it, or try a junk yard, I feel that you can use one from 1998-2000. Also try to buy one from Autozone etc. CPR ac_13.pdf ac_30.pdf
  9. ATF for the PS, and the gear lube for the differential. CPR
  10. Hi: Call the Lexus or a dealer and ask. They usually will not know much but it is worth a try, specially and old Tech. CPR
  11. Hi: Most likely is O2 sensor short bank 1 sensor 1. If you have it read it should be an easy fix once you make sure there lies the problem. You could also put some emission test passer that cleans the whole system and see what happens, but most likely is the sensor. It happened to mine at 74,000, the dealer said is pretty common you replace it and never hear of it again most likely. CPR
  12. Hello: Look in the net for tips on how to clean that sensor, It may all you need to do. www.lexls.com may have info on how to do so, or the articles of the club, if not look into the uk lexus forums they have it there also. But is a very simple procedure to perform. CPR
  13. Hi: I you want faster starts and have not replaced your fuel filter do so at this time. Also clean all your spark plug cables and ignition tips and if you have not replaced your rotors maybe a good time to do so. Then it also could be that you do not want to crank the car the extra two seconds and you abort the start just before it began, it happened to me a lot. CPR
  14. http://www.batterystuff.com/tutorial_battery.html#5 Hello: You need to have your battery tested and clean the terminals. After that you can see what is the problem. In the above site there is a wealth of information about battery life and other nice details. CPR
  15. Hello: Are you sure the High Pressure hose needs replacing and not the fitting and gasket that connet to the pump. I had a similar issuge and the dealer watned to replace the house when what was bad bad was a fitting and gasket the cost about 14 bucks, is the one that connects to the pump from the high pressure hose, take it out and replace it unless you have a hole in the hose that you can actually see. It saved me about 800 bucks and the repair in my case was free. Make sure you only need this part number 96341-41603 bolt union. of you know basic plumbing you do not even have to buy a new part. Just fix the fitting with sand paper and ATF fluid, it not just spend the money and you should have no problem, if the leaks are only at the bottom, if not then you may have to replace the hose and be sure to check the valve cover for leaks they are notorious for that, they might just need to be tighten or the gaske replaced. CPR
  16. Try to hit the top of the dash gently, if not have a good tech take them apart and clean them. Worked in my case. CPR
  17. In my opinion the first thing you should change is the faulty O2 sensor, reset codes and go from there. If they come back, you will have to have it diagnosed by an expert. You could also read up on the WT controller and see if it can be cleaned etc. Usually when codes say something in a bank failed is that the component needs replacing as the 02 sensor went in mine. CPR
  18. As they pointed out even in this Gen II is easy to do being careful, I never changed a pad in my life and followed the lexls.com tutorial and it was simple, just be careful not to remove the brake wear sensors or damage them. CPR
  19. After you change the plugs check your engine tranny mounts, that might be the problem if the plugs cable do not resolve the issue. After all it is a 1991, if you have not had them replace by now they are more than due. CPR
  20. Fix your valve cover gaskets first, they may just need to be snug, you can do that yourself use a small combination wrench and will need socket and ratchet and an extension 1/4 diamater. My car is a 1998 and had to do the covers a couple of times, but no leaks at this time. Them after that is fixed check again for leaks. Many times the leaks from the gaskets get confused with the leaks from the valve covers, bolts that become loose with time and vibration, and this indicates that your rack is probably leaking and needs rebuilding or replacing which should be the other source of leaks. Your PS pump is probably good as new for 300,000 miles it might make a humm sound this is not with much more consequence than it being a bit noisy. I also snug really tight the main pressure line that goes into the PS pump, you could loosen it and replace part *96341-41603, bolt union and gasket, but it might not be necessary it costs about 20 bucks, but the dealer will tell you to replace the high pressure hose, something that costs about 700 at the dealer without talking about labor, unless your high pressure hose has a hole in the rubber area do not worry about it. CPR
  21. I had my car filled with nitrogen, is the best thing and cheapest I done to improbe my Lexus. I recommended to all the members. 10.00 in Costco CPR
  22. What about a crank sensor going bad? I had one going bad the car would not start but would crank normally. Also inpect cables in areas close to the the said sensor and in the engine in general. CPR
  23. Have they used Disc Brake Quiet? CPR
  24. Hi: The humming noise coudl be the PS PUMP, which is typical because of the wear on these cars after a lot of miles/years. But besides that It should be no problem for a lot of years. Mine has it. Mitsubishi cars do get it in their PS Pumps but it sounds horrible compared with the LS which is just a little noise really CPR
  25. Hello: The humming noise could be the PS Pump, like in my case. My mechanic noticed, but with that noise it can go a long time, it is typical in these cars and the Mitsubishi, they more or less use the same type of PS PUMP. The Mitsubishi sounds even more than the one on the LS, like a growl.
