  1. Searching the Lexus forums there have been comments about the risk of changing ATF in high mileage vehicles with poorly serviced transmissions. I honestly don't know how real this is but it is certainly not something I made up. Over at clublexus.com there is a mention of a link to TrannySlip The most 'risk' (if it exists) seems to be with flushes and not the drain and fills per people's opinions. Does anyone here have an experience to share regarding fluid changes in a high mile RX. I'm not a mechanic and can't offer personal experience on this matter, I just remember reading about the subject in the past on forums.
  2. What are people's oppinions on changing 'old-old' transmision fluid as I know from past threads that there may be concerns of transmission failure when changing to new fluid as the 'particulate' nature of the burnt fluid increases friction for the transmission to grab. Any concerns changing fluid that may be 60,000+ miles old if there are no problems. Not really a question for myself but I know concerns have been raised in the past. Thanks
  3. Just wondering if anyone has tips on cleaning under the rear seats as my kids on occasion will drop things down the sides or between the seats. The bar to move the seat forward makes it extremely difficult to reach under there with an arm or vacuum extension. I tried folding the seats and popping off the fabric in the back which allows you to get behind the seats to some extent. My kids recently spilled some round candies and everytime I decelerate I can hear them rolling along the tracks. I tried parking downhill to try to clean better with some limited help. Not a serious problem by far, but just interested if someone has tried something creative. Can the seats be removed without too much difficulty? Thanks.
  4. I was just wondering what the end result of this problem was for osetleo. I am having the same issue. Once the car sits for awhile (overnight) the car does not start on the first attempt. When turning the key the lights, fans, radio are on with seemingly no hint of weakness. Typically I turn the key all the back (left) and re-attempt and it typically starts right up and runs normally. The clock has been resetting to 1 AM. When I searched the forum the clock reset consistently gets the same response of changing the battery by the responders. The battery is about 2 1/2 years old but was purchased at Wal-Mart (I have no idea of the quality of their batteries). Am I dealing with a battery problem or a starter problem? Obviously I'd much rather just drop a new battery in there than replace the starter. The car is a 99 RX 300. Thanks for your advice. Curt
  5. I agree. The floor mount is not the best for everyone. The unit that was purchased for me was not the unit I had wanted. I had wanted one of the newer, smaller replay models. The Audiovox PNP3 is a larger model and I didn't want to clutter dash / window area. I also considered mounting next to shifter (Crutchfield sells a vehicle specific mount for the RX) but I still felt unit was too bulky for that location. The PNP3 comes with a nice remote that is easy to navigate by feel. Once presets are in it is easy and safe to move to stations you would like. Certainly a floor mount may not be best for models with smaller screens. I've seen a picture of a nice clean mount in the glasses holder (ceiling) using a custom fabricated piece of plastic which really looked great.
  6. GSSS, Thanks for forwarding the email to the last request. Didn't check site last night. Hope no one had trouble with installation. It really is quite easy. If anyone still has any uncertainty let me know. If you wanted a visor mount you can take the wire across the top of the doors instead of coming down at back of the backseat doors. Running power there may be more problematic though.
  7. I am not sure if this is what you are experiencing or not but I recall reading a post that the transmission is programmed to rev. higher when the engine is cold to warm up the engine quicker. I notice this with my RX for the 1st couple of minutes driving then it functions normally shifting from stop signs / lights etc... I can't recall between which gears it occurs but it maybe something you want to test out yourself. Certainly the AWD's have history of transmission problems but it would be nice if this is all it is. How long have you noted this? I see that your are in Syracuse, certainly it's been cold there for a few months. I am not a mechanic and can't verify with certainty my statement is correct but I have read it here on different posts and my car certainly behaves predictably in this manner. If engine is off only for a few moments after driving (e.g. getting gas) in the cold weather the car behaves 'normally' as engine is still warm. I only note it with cold starts.
  8. Drew, Will send when I get home tonight.
  9. LexNYC - I did a search about satellite radio and tunnels and found an article from CNN.com in 2001 that said the following ---To prevent dropout for motorists driving around mountains, through tunnels, or between tall buildings, XM is setting up as many as 1,500 repeaters on the ground to boost the satellite signal. Sirius has three satellites in orbit and also will use ground repeaters where needed to push the signal around tall structures. Both companies say their signals will be better than current FM signals. Capobianco with Sirius says the sound will be crystal clear. ----- I would imagine Sirius would definitely want to make sure NYC drivers stuck in tunnels are able to hear the signal, especially with the loyal Stern fans in that city. Also, Sirius is based in NYC. I wonder if any Sirius users could comment on driving in and around NYC.
  10. Mike - I'd be happy to send you the pictures. The site only allows a 100KB picture which didn't allow me to give much detail. I tried clicking on your name to email you directly but it would not allow me. Did you want to post address here? I'll get the pictures out to you. Curt
  11. I just installed a Sirius satellite radio. I attached pictures to show how I ran the satellite wire. The antenna is mounted on rear roof, middle. The wire is easy to enter into car at the rear door and pass inside molding along roof to the back of the rear passenger door. Then go down to the floor from there and to the front of the car by the front passenger feet area. I have a floor mount which works ok for me but once you get the antenna wire to front, center console you can pick where you want it. Any questions about the pictures let me know. The quality is limited by the attachment size allowed. No molding / plastic had to be removed, it is extremely easy to run the wire this way and is completely hidden when inside the car. Antenna wire can be seen when loading groceries, etc.. in the rear with door up. When you go into a tunnel or if stopped at a light under an overpass, I do lose signal. I believe some of the models have a feature, similar to the anti-skip of CD players, where it stores the signal and broadcasts a few moments later. I doubt it would be helpful if you are passing through long tunnels though. The power I took from the rear cigarette lighter and ran wire under floor console (tucks very easily underneath it).
  12. Just wondering if anyone has installed a wood dash kit on their RX. I was doing some searching and found several sites that offer them (mostly around $200). Wooddashexperts.com offers a real wood set that is OEM (LSRX98A-ROEM). Does that mean that the set is made by Lexus / Toyota (more likely made by someone else for them) and would be what you would get had you picked the option at time of purchase. Is Lexus simply sticking on inserts for the full wood option? In my oppinion the full wood (especially around the center / radio is a bit overkill but to dress up the vents, speakers and some of the console would give a nice effect. If anyone has used one please comment on your success and how easy it is to undo if you are unhappy (I heard it was tough). Any pictures would be great. Thanks
  13. I have a 99 RX as well and my passenger front just went. I posted here last month or so and got suggestions but ended up taking it to the Lexus dealer after I read my after-market warranty actually covered power dook lock actuators. Lexus wanted to charge $340 for the part and $85 for labor but the warranty company said the part is $260 and would cover $45 of labor. Fortunately the dealer adjusted the charges and I was left with paying only my $100 deductible plus tax. Good luck.
  14. lenore, Thanks for the information. Did you do the work yourself and the $285 reflects the cost of the replacement motor or was that the cost of a dealership repair. I guess I'll try getting the door panel off and maybe I'll be lucky and there's a loose connection there. The thing I don't understand is that the door will unlock with the key on that side but I think that is still an electronic unlocking and not a manual (meaning that the turning of the key is not directly causing the lock to open and close). To me that suggests that the motor must work to some capacity. Thanks
  15. I own a 99 RX 300 and just recently noted problems with the passenger door lock. I first noted that when locking the doors (with the remote) I would hear the doors lock but no longer heard the beep indicating doors were locked. Didn't figure much of it until recently noted that passenger front was not locking. The passenger door will lock and unlock if using the key on that door only. Using the power door lock buttons (driver and passenger side) inside the car will not make the lock on passenger door move either. Moving the lock manually on the passenger door works fine and seems without resistence so I'm not sure why this will not rock back and forth with the power controls (especially since using the key on the passenger door still works). If I eternally let my passenger door stay locked then when I lock doors with remote I hear the familiar beep (as all doors are locked). So driving back and forth to work by myself is not a problem but to let my wife in I have to manually unlock door now. Any ideas would be great before I inquire with a Lexus dealer. I briefly looked at taking the door panel off to take a better look but I guess I got nervous to proceed further. I noted 4 screws (2 on bottem, 1 at door lock and 1 at handle). I also noted the plastic plugs on the sides. Is it as simple as taking out the screws and the plugs to remove panel. Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks
