  1. Good news, glad it worked out. I think you're gonna love the car. And one more thing, Sewell Lexus in dallas has an online store called Lexus-parts.com, they will sell you original lexus parts for a discounted price (or at least cheaper than other dealerships). I'm not trying to promote them or anything, it's just a pointer to a really good source with excellent customer service. I buy parts from them from filters to shocks to paint touch up, and it's been a pleasure...so good luck
  2. Here's a few suggestions for things that could be wrong: Fuel filter might be clogged with this many miles, so you might need a new one Intake air pressure sensor located on the side of the intake pipe after the filter, could be dirty or could need replacement engine mounts might be worn out and so the engine sort of shudders or vibrates when you accelerate let us know what you think, and good luck
  3. well if you have the tool, then ya of course, that'll be an option to narrow it down, i don't know how hands on he is though, the work involved to get to the lower ball joint, take out the assembly, and seperate the ball is pretty involved. now if it was the upper arm, it's a whole lot easier, or at least that's my opinion...but SK, do you think that could be the reason for slow steering rebound at 45000? it sounds unlikely, but the symptoms are very similar to what happened with me
  4. well i guess you checked the suspension already, my bad i missed that. i don't know of any way to check ball joints other than looking at them externally, so it could still be the cause even though they checked them. are you the first owner or did you buy it used?
  5. Jim, here's what happened with my 98 gs3: when the steering started doing that, it was a sign of one of the lower ball joints about to fail. It also made a loud squeeling noise when turning at low speeds in parking lots. eventually the passenger side lower ball joint failed, I hauled it to the dealer and changed both sides. Now, having said that, I think it could be a psooible reason for your problem, although I think it's happening too early for you (an 03 with only 45000, should be flawless), but again I don't know the history of the car, but I know that if you corner hard all the time, especially with wider rims and tires, it puts a bigger load on the steering and suspension assemblies, or it could be a defective joint. Mine is an older gs3 and had 120,000 on it when it happened, and i can tell you that for the last 20,000 i was fish-tailing on every corner i can, i had almost slik worn out tires, and i was having fun with it, but i paid the price. if suspension is too soft too, it could also mean that the car was driven hard on corners (low speeds with a lot of power). I don't know that car's history but it sounds like the previous owner autocrossed the car or something, if so, then all of what you're experiencing is very possible at 45000. also, usually when you put wider rims and tires, it's a load on the power steering pump, so if there's any defect in the pump or lines, it could lead to a slow turning rebound effect like the one you're experiencing. what I would do is, if you have warranty, have the dealer or a trusted mechanic check steering and suspension assemblies for possible play, power steering pump and lines. If not, surely someone else here will shed more light on it let us know what happens
  6. Thanks buddy, the information is invaluable, helped out a lot...I'll post once I'm done with replacing it. Oh, and one more thing for future reference: you can get discounted OEM parts from www.lexus-parts.com, It's a Lexus dealer (Sewell Lexus, Dallas, TX) that has an online website and sells OEM parts for discounted prices only for internet buyers, and they'll ship almost anywhere. The whole Upper arm assembly is $360 per side, which is a pretty good deal
  7. Hey guys, has anybody tried replacing their front upper control arms on a 98-05 gs3 at home? are there any special tools required? does it take long? it looks simple enough to me, but I'm sure there's more to it...I looked for postings about that but couldn't find anything, I also looked for do it yourself manuals....if anybody has any input, I'd really apreciate it, I'm sure somebody has done it or gone through the process before, so please feel free to share thanks
  8. Hey, I agree with the guys. Even if you do it, you're dumping air from the nose into the wheel well if I understand correctly, but that well is "open" to the atmosphere, so you're not guarateeing that the air is going into your intake. I want to notice s slight increase in power, I would recommend leaving the setup as it is, and getting the TRD performance air filter sold at dealerships or at www.lexus-parts.com. To me, the factory setup makes more sense than any mod I've seen, the nose scoops a big volume of air, it pushes it through a narrow x-sectional area tube (which speeds it quiet a bit) and then using a low restriction performance filter, you get it to the intakes. I think that's as golden as you can get. But that's just me
  9. Hey guys, I'm new to these discussions, and I have a question. I just recently changed lower ball joints, and dealer recommended that I change the upper control arms because "there's a lot of play" in them. I figured it would improve the steering wheel feel, and handling, and possibly illiminate the slight vibration i feel around speeds of 60-65, after all, with 125K miles on it, she could use some new Upper arms. I've been reading here and I noticd that some guys change control arm bushings instead of the whole thing, so my question is: Is replacing control arm bushings an option or do I have to replace the Upper control arm? are those even related or am I just mixed up in the terms? I 'd appreciate any input, and would be glad to answer about anything that I know of
  10. Hey guys, I have 98 GS3, and I noticed the weiredest thing ever. There is a spot on the driver side floor carpet (the spot where you usually rest the bottom of your right foot when driving) that is always wet. At first I thought I forgot the window open and it rained or something and some water leaked in, but no. I dried that spot completely and after three days it wet itself again. I thought well maybe something behind the dashboard is leaking along the sidewalls and it collects at the bottom, but no again, that spot wets itself from within, all the sidewalls around it are dry. the funny thing is that the floor mat doesn't get wet, just the floor carpet underneath. the best i could come up with is maybe there is some sort of a line that carries some liquid that runs underneath the floor carpet, and for some reason that line leaks, but I can't figure it out without taking the carpet off. the liquid has kind of a reddish pink color. I can use any suggestions here, I don't think anybody has ever had that problem, but anything can help. Cheers
