  1. If the bottom shroud isn't ripped and just the bolt holes are torn out, you can use large washers over the screws. Most of the holes on mine were worn out so I did this and it has worked great. Regarding the idle. What I use is carb cleaner spray to find vacuum leaks. As soon as it finds one you will hear the idle drop noticably. Regarding the noise in the distrubutor, sounds like a spark noise. Look in there at night, you can usually see the arcing, especially on humid nights.
  2. It looks a whole lot better than the current butt ugly Avs
  3. I have had several cars where the AM band didn't work but the FM did. It never bothered me since all there is on AM is a bunch of boring talk radio. I guess if you listen to sports or something you might need it occasionally but I watch most sports on TV anyway. The AM signal must be there first to go.
  4. I was as well.... at least until I bought this Lexus. I don't much like spending the money but since I don't have any car payments I guess it isn't too bad. Then I drive it on the Interstate and know it is all worth the price. I have fixed a lot of things on this car from stuff I learned here.
  5. Usually in Virginia when it gets belows 32 degrees we get ice on our windshields and can't see where we are going.
  6. I must admit I have "gotten on it" a few times. I try not to smoke the tires as they cost too much, but once I get it rolling, it will scream up to redline then silky smooth shift up through the gears. Then I start worrying about cops. Maybe we need a MPEG section somewhere on LOC? I'd love to see a few videos of cars cruising.
  7. Oh man, Guess I need glasses! When you buy one, you will love it. When you drive a nice LS it is so cool. They are so glassy smooth and powerful. Now that I put that K&N on there it is even more fun!
  8. I looked at a 1992 LS400 last week. It had 120K miles, was gold and had 16" five point wheels with quite good VR tires. Interior was brown or dark tan and lokked pretty good. Guy wanted $8500. A little high for what I saw. Anyway, Spalato, you just bought a really cool car, welcome to LOC. Denny
  9. With fuel injection, altitude makes no difference as the computer compensates. Not like the old days with duel carbs on a TR4A up the Rocky's.
  10. I read in Car & Driver or some other car mag that Toyota was introducing Lexus in Japan. Am I right in assuming that they have been marketing the LS under the Toyota Celsior all this time?
  11. Excellent and very detailed information there Bob. My car runs at 1600 RPM's on start up, and slowly drops in increments until warm idle at 600 RPM's. The car has never stalled or even felt like it might. When I first bought the car I was concerned about the high start up idle speed, but I believe that 1600 RPM's is normal on a 1990.
  12. When I had a caliper sticking, when I put my hand on the wheel it felt really hot whereas the other side was relatively cool. As the pads wear, the pistons in the calipers are forced further outward causing the boot to gather crud. I replaced my caliper with an original for $90 (from Bap Geon). Took about 1 hour including jacking up the car. I didn't want to have it warping a rotor or anything.
  13. I remember hearing from my dad that 90% of problems were electrical, and 10% were fuel.
  14. And I believe you Monarch! Last year I was cruising my 92 Caprice up I-295 in NJ late one Sunday night, I was cruising at a pleasant 80 or so. Then I felt a slight stumble which felt like fuel deprivation. Nothing for several miles then I felt it again. After another mile, it grew noticeably worse then the cjeck engine light came on. S***, luckily, I was just approaching an exit. I whipped down the ramp, through a red light and into a Wendy's parking lot. As I pulled up into a space, the engine died. I cranked and no gas. I called AAA and had the car towed up to a Chevy dealer in Caldwell and they determined that the fuel pump had failed. After only 184,000 miles! I usually fill up when I am about 1/4 tank, is that cool for protecting the pump?
  15. Did you replace the O rings as well? what size, where did you get them?
  16. Just remember when doing coolant service that regular anti-freeze in NOT usually compatible with long-life coolant. Mixing the two can cause big problems because of the reaction between the two.
  17. Permium fuel with it's higher octane burns much slower than regular(87). When you put regular gas in it causes the computer to !Removed! the timing so as to limit octane knock and possible engine damage. With regular your car will make a lot of noise and cetainly not run as well. I would personally use only premium because that is what the engineers designed the engine to use. The white smoke indicates mositure. It is common for cars to emit some white vapors upon start up. If you start getting a lot and it appears when you are driving it usually indicates a blown head gasket. I have never heard of a Lexus V-8 having a blown headgasket so I would attribute the smoke to simple condensation. I use the Chevron Techron in all my vehicles at each oil change. I buy the four pack at Costco for about $14.
  18. I picked up about 2 mpg by replacing my dirty old air filter with a K&N high flow filter. Noticeably more power and imporved milage? who can argue with that?
  19. Interesting. I noticed in one of the pictures that there is a 1/10 mile digit on the odometer which appears to be blocked by the "miles" portion of the cover. Since my car doesn't have a 1/10 indicator (except on the digital trip meters) I guess that's how it is.
  20. I'm pretty sure that Amsoil is okay. Probably better up there in Canada since synthetic doesn't thicken in cold weather. I would contact an Amsoil dealer and ask them for details.
  21. I never, ever heard of an odometer resetting itself. I'm sure there are ways to hack anything but again very unlikely. Big, big fines and penalties for such activities. Your car is 99.99% original. Now get it out there on the road and report back on how fast it goes! Enjoy!
  22. How to you see it to know it is cracked? I looked on mine and all I could see was the very top of the tube going down by the firewall. From what I have read it seems it is neccessary to put the car on a lift and remove the exhaust headers to put yourself in a position to do a nearly impossible job. It sounds like the only proper way to do this is to remove the transmission. And yeah, I'll give a second on the bad engineering statement.
  23. I had a Cadillac and a Caprice. Both had transmissions go out and both whined prior to failure. On the Chevy, the engine temperature jumped greatly and caused the radiator to overheat. I might add that I had a very new 3 core radiator and waterpump in the car and it always ran very cool. The smell was like you described. More than likely your clutch discs are probably cooked because that is what you smelled. I know how you feel man, another royal pain that you just didn't need to deal with.
  24. uh oh. My A/C isn't working. It worked fine up until the compressor stopped running. The AC light never flashed (and still doesn't) so maybe... just maybe, my evaporator leaked the freon and the low pressure switch cut it off. I'm guessing from what you guys are saying is that this is a huge task?
  25. Grover Cleveland's birthplace, Caldwell, NJ. 22nd & 24th President. Too bad the big boy didn't have a LS.
