Telescoping Steering Wheel Making Grinding Noise?
VBdenny replied to david1walker's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
Didn't know they removed the off on switch in later models. My works perfectly and it will stay that way because it is shut off. Never saw they need for it but I figure if in the future I gain a ton of weight it might come in handy. -
I use 225/60VR-15 Goodyear traction TA tires on my 90. As previously mentioned, that size is getting really hard to find. I think only BFG and a few others are available. My tires are pretty much shot but I haven't replaced them since I can't find something I like. I want at least an H rated tires and would prefer the V rating. Everything now is 17 18 19 and "city" tires.

Yup, if you want to replace the broken locks BUT, I wouldn't. I don't think people steal anything under a 22" wheel anymore. Getting the broken one of will be the problem. Everything good 400?
-
That is not good. Both of my Lexus cars have the same tool although the patterns are different. I have thought about removing the locking lugs and replacing it will a regular lug nut but that is one of the things I never got around to doing. I usually leave the one locking lugnut on each wheel slightly loose. Of course if you take it somewhere the dip weeds often use air tools and really torque them on. Hopefully it was the tool that broke and not the lug itself or you have a big issue.

Why change it if it works?

Telescoping Steering Wheel Making Grinding Noise?
VBdenny replied to david1walker's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
There is a switch right next to the control that turns this feature off. Just press the AUTO button and the wheel will not move. -
My ebrake gets used only once a year and that is at the annual inspection. No hills here so you can just about leave the car in neutral and it stays put.

Best Way To Tighten Up Handling For 95 Ls400?
VBdenny replied to mnesbit's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
Tires. Very important for handling. -
Same thing happened to me, in fact almost got me a couple times until I found a big stick to stick in there. Okay, so as you heard, buy them on ebay, well you can but there are other options for you. I looked at the replacements on ebay, online sites and dealerships and I thought the prices were wayyyy --- high. Somewhere right here on LOC I read about how to replace with Autozone struts and I bought 2 for maybe $20 and used them. I did have to grind a little but it was easy with pretty simple tools (like a Dremel) and they have worked great (better than what Lexus made anyway) for over 7 years. All it takes is research and questions.

Lexus Ls400 91' A/c Light Blinks Compressor Clutch Not Engage
VBdenny replied to anthonyinit's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
When the A/C compressor light blinks, it means the compressor is locking up. What this means to you is much more severe. From now on, you will probably never have A/C in the car because IF it is whatit appears to be (compressor failure) then it will cost you $2500 to replace the A/C system. When I first hear this I said yeah, BS but then I took it to another place and then another and another and all said, expensive because apparently you have to remove the dash and many other parts. When it first happened way back 5 years ago, I had it converted to R-134A which worked for awhile then the same thing. As a result, my beautiful LS400 sits al most all summer while I drive one of my other cars with A/C. Sure wish it worked but after 5 or 6 years, I hold little hope. -
The most likely cause of the brake issue you are having is sticking caliper pins. I had the exact same thing happen when a pin hung up and my front brakes went to xxxx. When I took it apart I found sure enough, one of the pins was really stuck and it forced one end of the brake pad against the rotor which wore the pad all the way down. I removed the pins, cleaned and greased then put n new pads and everything was back to good.

Seems unusual for no CEL but it is that. I had the vacuum plug I used to block off the power steering line come off and mine started running terrible. Popped it back on ( a little better than last time) and I'm good to go.

There is a temperature sensor which activates the fan when needed. Apparently your sensor has gone south. Of course it could be the fan motor itself which isn't likely with2 fans. I just replaced the sensor on a Miata I own and now the fan works. Not many miatas at pick and pull but a lot of old mazdas. I examined and took pictures of the one I had and sure enough found the exact same. Using a magnifying glass I examined the first one I found and it said china so I kept looking and found another with a part number. Look for the thermostat cover and the sensor is in that area.

Brevity, right here on LOC.

Probably the switch is bad. They are pretty easy to remove and you'll probably find a mess of debris in there. Use some contact cleaner and it might work. Otherwise, I'd look in a local junkyard. Many junkyards, excuse me, salvage centers, have online listing of inventory. For the LS you have to strike fast because those switches are the first thing to go. In most cases, cleaning them works so try that.

In Virginia, I believe they call it a Salvage Title meaning the car was declared a total loss due to accident, flooding, whatever when the damage exceeded the value. You could probably run a carfax on the VIN and maybe find out what the issue. If it is a flood car, run fast. With the price of Lexus parts and labor, probably wouldn't take too much damage to exceed the value of a car 5 or more years old. Again, the biggest downside is when you go to sell it. If its not a flood car, I'd say, hey to the guy (because he probably thought the same things you are now when he bought it) the title greatly diminishes the value and say 10 bucks even. Drive it for another 3 or 4 years and by then people buying a car that old aren't nearly as concerned with title things from the past, they look at cost. I'd say at that point you could get an easy 5 or 6 for it, more if you add wax.

Please Talk Me Into Keeping The Best Car On The Planet!
VBdenny replied to Golfing's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
I put 4 sweet Winterforce snow tires on my wife's ES330 and it goes great in the snow. Of course I will always prefer RWD myself. -
Let me tell you this important note. For whatever reason, these LS400's need a LOT of battery to start. A LOT more than most cars. Almost impossible to jump, ever for highly trained airport parking lot crews. You can not have too much battery in this car. Yeah, dirty terminals aren't good but, my guess is a battery that dies when a real hard load is placed on it. Be careful because the auto store people will often test it as okay but that doesn't mean it is. I'd suggest a Optima Red Top, worked for me.

VBdenny replied to Golfing's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
I have to agree. Of course I kind of "collect" cars and sometimes my wife isn't happy. Out of my 4 current, the LS400 would be the last to go. The goodbye order would be Miata, 66, truck, LS400. Best car I've ever owned, had it ten years and it still is just great. I'll go with Billy, forget the truck. -
Clunking Noise While Waiting For Traffic Light To Change.
VBdenny replied to lsrxlex's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
Rather than guessing, I'd take the thing to a Toyota dealership and have them determine what's wrong. For $75 you'll know if it's big or small. The only other suggestion is if the clunk is loud, make a video of it, post it on YouTube and maybe you'll luck out. Good luck with the car. -
I love it here. Fabulous place to live with a temperate climate to boot. Didn't see his was a 99, thought it said 94 but I'll have to blame NCAA basketball for that. My multitasking skills are apparently deficient. Big improvement to remove the yellow. I do have a set of backups from the junkyard with the yellow glass intact in case i ever need them. Big pollen here right now so I have the LS covered for now.

How Can You Tell If The Mileage Is Not Correct?
VBdenny replied to pavlovich's topic in 90 - 00 Lexus LS400
I bought my wife's ES330 with 22000 miles. First thing I did was put new tires on the car. They had about half the tread but were junk. I put a set of Yokohama Avid V4s, 235/60VR-16 on for summer and Firestone Winterforce, same size in the winter. Easy things to check is excessive wear on the right side of the brake pedal and wear marks on the floor where your heel goes when you drive. Pretty hard to change mileage on new cars. Many people buy a Lexus then never drive much so I'd think your good. -
I think Pic n Pull often has an older LS in and they'd probably got around $15 for one, maybe less. Of course JB Weld always works on everything
-
I'd ask 5000 and settle for 3500 minimum. Of course I wouldn't sell mine because it's better driving than any new car. IF you do go to sell it, spend the time to wash, clay and wax the car. Especially clean things like windows in and out (even the back one) and mirrors, steering wheel, etc. I can also understand the wife thing as my wife is trying to make me sell my Miata. Bought it to flip and made the mistake of driving it so it has been around about a year now.

Oh sorry, hey 90 how it going?
