  1. If you got the time go for it, but why would you wanna do that tho? I mean, this car is not exactly a performance car to begin with. Even if you were to swap trans and hi-power engine, the weight would still hold you back. Just my two cents, but then again I have seen some crazier projects out there, so in comparison your would not be that crazy either. :whistles:
  2. Sorry, slow reply, i was away vacationing, anyway, if your bf did motor swaps and such, then he should be able to do a brake job. You have a 90 LS? Then you have 15" rims if they're stock, so only stock rotors will fit. You can get the rotors from tirerack.com , and shipping won't be that crazy either to Hawaii, unless you trust yourself with some other brand at the local autoparts.. I wouldn't. Good luck.
  3. 808, are you somewhat mechanically inclined? If so, then the brake job is super easy! I had fading problems as well, plus vibrating in the sterring wheel, so i changed the rotors to Brembo rotors, and installed ceramic pads, and flushed out the fluid. Excellent braking now, with no fading, and saved some decent money by doing it myself.
  4. They were "OEM" brand as in "made by OEM" , NOT Toyota, check the box out. Only difference I saw was that the 17mm bolt mating surfaces were faced (machined or ground flat) on the original ball joint and the aftermarket unit were just cast flat. As far as I remember, defective ball joints will make a clunking sound during very tight turns, and i have changed a few of those bad boys! Go in an empty parking lot, turn your wheels all the way to the left,if there is a clunk, then chances are, that your right ball joint needs to be replaced, and viceversa. Also check if the rubber boot is broken, if it is,then chances are, that the ball joint is broken as well. Wait! Let me get this straight....your ball joints were made by "OEM" brand? Uhmm :whistles:
  5. Mine does the same, but it usually comes on at start then it goes away. It does that because it has a small crack in the coolant reservoir, and it looses coolant, so the level drops. Once i refill it, while it's cold of course, the light doesn't come on, till the level drops again.Have you checked your coolant level? Try adding some coolant while cold up to the top line, and see what happens.
  6. Check out this site, I think u'll find it helpful: http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/audio/
  7. Its been a while since I've changed mines, but if I remember correctly each door speaker is 4", and the big one in the rear thats the subwoofer, I haven't changed that one. Those are all component speakers, with individual crossovers.I've replaced all my speakers with MB Quarts, which are pretty up there, the sound is flawless, but it's not the kinda sound where you'll get that booming base, if you want that you need to upgrade the sub as well. I got my speakers on ebay, even tho you need to be careful, cause there are alot of fakes out there, if you want peace of mind, you can go with Crutchfield, but their prices are a bit high, Good luck.
  8. Interesting! Here on Oahu the H1, H2, H3 are all highways to me, and some do stretch to 5 lanes each way, and speed limits are 60 mph, I don't travel during rush hour, so I do get to travel for about 20 or 30 miles at around 70 mph. But I digress, is the width of the lanes a factor in fuel consumption? I doubt it. Also, it is true that if you go straight farther then 30 miles you'll end up in the water, but is that really an important factor? Does the car start consuming less and less fuel after you've traveled 30 or 40 miles? No matter what the technical definition might be for " highways" I still don't see how a first generation LS can pull those high mpg #s. <_<
  9. I see so many first generation LS owners claiming that they get 25, 27, i've seen even 30 mpg on the highway, how is that even possible for such a heavy car with an 8 cylinder, Japanese technology or not. I'm not calling anyone liar, but I wonder how precise, the measuring methods really are. I get about 16 mpg city driving, and even if I were to drive highways at 60 mph,and there are alot of hwys here in Hawaii, I still would not get anywhere near that 27 mpg, and I have very low miles on the engine too. Alot of modern day 4 cylinder cars claim those type of numbers, and usually those ratings #'s tend to be overly optimistic.Ok, the new LS460 claims 18/27 , but this is a 2007 car, does this mean that technology has remained stagnant? Or was the technology for the first generation LS so ahead of its time, that even Lexus can no longer improve on it? Am I missing something here?
  10. Joe, is it possible for you to solder it? Thats what I would do, cause all that vibration would definetly lose the electrical tape you have now.
  11. NC, do you really want to sit down those potential buyers, and slam down in front of them 48 pages of repairs? If I was buying a car, and someone presented me with all that, I'd be intimidated and overwhelmed, I think all one would see, is the smoke left, right after i flew out the door. At that point, you could give all the reasons in the world as to why you're selling it, but the only thing going thru the buyers mind is " this guy is finally tired of paying for repairs, and i'll be stuck with it". My suggestion? If at this points there are no problems with your car, just point out all the positives, you wouldn't be lying, and you definetly wouldn't be scaring "last nights dinner'' out of those buyers.
  12. I noticed you have the original wheels on, what happened to the aftermarket ones?
  13. This is a sad sad day!!!! Nahh, just kidding, eventho yes, I am surprised as well that you're selling, given your declared love for the LS. By the way, isn;t a 3 series wagon about the same size as a IS300 wagon? Just food for toughts, anyway, wish you luck and hopefully you'll enjoy your next car way more. Will you still show up here and there?
  14. Omar, as dfkd says.. always replace the pad set at once. Also ..whenever you replace the rotor, even if the pads look great, they should still be changed at the same time! Last but not least, you said that one side had alot of pad left? I might want to check the caliper sliding pins, infact , go to Autozone or what have you, and buy " calipers sliding pins lube" usually when i get mine, they come in small packets. Anyway, everytime you do your brakes, always lube the sliding pins, the ones with that tiny boot moving the caliper on braket. Over time the lube inside will dry up, or the boot might come off, then the caliper will seize, and one or both side of the pads will fail, along with the caliper, it would be good preventive maintanance. Good luck!!
  15. My personal opinion? I think your mechanic is trying to take you for a ride! And not to show you how good of a job he has done! As far as I know, power steering leaks will always show, not only on Lexus , but on every car in general! So the PS fluid is able to escape the sealed rack, because of worn seals.. but it's not able to escape the boot where it gets collected? And show signs of leakage? Switch mechanic, you'll be saving yourself alot of money, orrrr have your car checked elsewhere.
