  1. I know this is an old thread, but the below additional information may be useful for anyone attempting this task: (referring to the step numbers above): 1. I found it useful to remove the battery tray, secured by 4 10mm nuts, which provides a bit more room to work. 2&4. I removed the 10mm bolt holding the white connector to the bracket, so I didn't need to disconnect the white connector - I'm always concerned about trying to get old plastic parts to disconnect & reconnect without breakage. 7. Putting the 14mm bolt back on first was easier - sprayed WD40 on the bolt and the bolthole. I also dropped the bolt once, and it just ended up in the plastic pan, so it is easy to retrieve. Getting the 14mm bolt back in place requires good feel, so this is where I took off the gloves. No skinned knuckles, a successful job and my 91 definitely runs smoother!
  2. Hi all: I've just joined the forum and hope that someone can give some insight onto the problem I'm having. I have a 91 LS400, 180K When the throttle is just feathered, the car stumbles (speeds above 40 are most noticeable). When I take it out of overdrive, the same symptoms occur at higher RPMs, but the same feathered throttle, so it doesn't seem to be RPM related, but more due to the throttle. When the throttle is pressed harder, normal acceleration (disclaimer: not having driven another LS400, I can't be sure that the acceleration is as it should be - how to check?). Items replaced or changed so far: Timing belt - partially corrected the problem (old belt had jumped a tooth or two), needed anyway since it appears that it had the original timing belt with 170K miles on it!! New plugs, plug wires, distributor caps & rotors, air filter New Throttle Position Sensor - no change Hacked fuel pump relay to deliver constant 12 V to fuel pump (partially corrected the issue) New fuel filter Other: No Check Engine Light codes. 15-17 MPG mix of freeway and city. Just barely passed smog last inspection. I've been considering replacing the fuel pump next, but am at somewhat of a loss as to what the symptoms indicate. Any suggestions? Jim 91 LS400
  3. Hi Everyone: I've had a 91 LS400 for several years now (180K miles), and am generally happy with it, although there are still a few minor issues I am hoping to get help with. My first main success was changing out the climate control LCD by installing a replacement one from Ebay - is fairly easy if handy with a soldering iron. Have done a few routine maintenance items, such as changing plugs, but left changing the distributor cap & rotor to my mechanic, when I had them do when they changed the timing belt at about 160K - they said it was the original one, and was cracked, and had skipped a few teeth, making the LS400 run a bit rough.... Anyway, I have a few issues that I hope folks can help me with. I have some info on the fuel pump relay that may help folks, will post on forum. Thanks, Jim
