A mechanic friend of mine is teaching me how to install brake pads on my 97 LX450 next week, and I want to have all of the parts ready for him. So I just bought replacement OEM front/rear brake pads from cruiserparts.net, and I have a FSM for a 97 Land Cruiser. That being said, according to the FSM, "When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads." I notice from the postings that brake pad replacement is a 1/4 - 1/2 banana (depending on who's posting you read, and not quite sure what the banana means) job, but there is no mention of the anti-squeal shims. Do I really have to replace the anti-squeal shims? Thoughts? Thanks, Jim.

I have a 97 LX 450. 2nd owner, maybe 3rd. Has roughly 118k miles on it. Living in Michigan right now, and during the biting cold winter months, and at the first start of the day, when I turn the steering wheel, I hear some obnoxious loud sound, almost like the lubricant is NOT warmed-up yet in the steering column. But after driving throughout the day, the squeek is less and less. Thoughts? For now, I'm just dealing with the problem and am soon moving to a warmer climate.
