  1. Hi all, My 93 LS400 with 115k was running fine till few days back.. Suddenly it has started giving some wierd starting issues.. My mechanic is out on a vacation and will have to wait for another 3-4 days till he comes back.. So I am looking for any expert opinion out here.. When I start it does not fire instantly.. It takes a few minutes and starts after trying a few minutes.. It constantly happens.. One day it did not start at all. AAA guy who came to start said battery was fine.. Sometimes it trys to start even after engine is started and running which freaks me out.. Will a bad alternator do this?... Once this funky startup procedure works, I am able to drive.. Stop/start again the same funky way/drive etc.. My power steering seems to have leak as well.. Is this just a bad alternator? or do you guys think there is something else wrong.. Thanks a lottt..
  2. I just got my EGR pipe replaced and also, some more welding work in exhaust done to seal some cracks.. Cost $200 for EGR pipe and gaskets.. - Got it from dealer.. $325 for repairs.. The mechanic told me it was really a hell of a job.. 93Ls400 .. So ur seems pretty close.. Let us know if there is any change in mileage after this is done..
  3. Thanks a lot LScott400 . I am comfortable with this change of replacing the EGR tube.. The other problem is what is really not settling in.. The mechanic also said there is a crack in the joint between the catalytic converters and the Y tube - The front exhaust pipe. His advice was to cut them and weld the catalytic converters with the front exhaust pipe.. All these incldued for $325 labor.. Seems to be a pretty well known muffler guy in the area as I noticed couple of 1970's cars bought in by senior citizens who told he is the best.. And couple of more people recommended him.. My only qn. is if he does what he said to the catalytic converters, (which as per him will come for 3-5 years) will I be risking replacing the converters anytime soon and basically spend a lot more ? - I mean, will this change cost me a lot more in a years time or is it just going to be the same. His comment on this was unless you have to replace the catalytic converters it is not going to make any difference. And when I actually have to replace the catalytic converters it is anyways going to cost me quite a lot.. Hmm.. My Ls400 has just 104k on it.. Bought it two years back with 89k on it for $6800.. Hope it can last me a couple of more years as I love it too much to replace now.. -:( Appreciate your inputs. I am planning to leave the car tomorrow to him.. Will have a chat with him again tomorrow... Pls. provide me your thoughts on my second issue..
  4. Sorry a mistake in my previous post.. The tube that has a crack is the one from intake to manifold. They call it an E tube. Can I get an exhaust system diagram for a LS400? Thanks
  5. All. Need help... Went for a state inspection and got it rejected because he told there is some exhaust issue.. And he gave a Red R - which means cops will pull me over a lot.. Went to a local mechanic who is a specialist in exhaust and this is what he told.. There are two cracks.. One is in the large diameter tube.. which connects the exhaust to the manifold.. And another crack in the head of Y tube.. So he suggested he will weld the joints after cutting them. I can descibe the second problem better If I can see a diagram of the exhaust.. Cost - $200 for parts - OEM Work - $325 Pls. give some expert advice - Thanks..
  6. Guys.. Thanks for your help.. I got it done by this mechanic who was recomended by my friend for $395 with OEM parts.. The guy charged only $150 for labour though he took almost one week to see the car due to his busy schedule... Saved 250 dollars!! All in all my LS400 has been a godsend.. Spent $500 thru the year including the above and it runs like a king!! I just love this car.. :D
  7. I went to firestone again for an estimate and they provided an estimate of $664. :chairshot: :o Parts: Springs (2) - 258 Labor: 302 Allignment: 70 I asked if I could buy the parts from outside and they refused.. I went to another mechanic nearby and he has told me to comein next weekend as he is busy.. This guy is supposed to be good as one of my neighbours who has a LS400 has been visiting him for ages now.. Can I do it myself?
  8. Hi all.. Thanks for the comments.. Actualy the car leans very low on the driver rear side now.. I myself used the jack and saw the springs broken real bad.. I could actually take out one of the broken piece... I have obviously not tried to drive it anymore... Pls. let me know what should I do? Can I just get the spring? Or should I replace the entire set.. I bought it an year back with no guarantee from a dealer.. And also If I am replacing should i replace the entire rear side ones? Thanks again..
  9. Hi, Need some help for a newbie.. I have a well maintained 93 lexus ls400 with 93 k miles on it.. Just started hearing some sounds in the rear side and took to the nearby firestone. They told me the springs of the struts are broken and have asked me to come back for an estimation. What is the best way to go ahead? It was a great car.. Its just that my stupid city have been laying the roads to my house for 40 days now..
