  1. I *highly* recommend Tom's Car Care on Lakewood Blvd. about a half mile north of the 91 in Bellflower. He's honest, fair, and also a fellow LS400 owner. His shop isn't much to look at, especially for those used to the service department at the local Lexus dealer, but it does make for low overhead! I don't get anything out of it, so it doesn't matter either way.
  2. The "base" Pioneer audio system was also labelled as "Premium", and IMHO, I totally agree with Lexus calling it such. The '90-'94s actually said Pioneer on the front of the unit, whereas the '95-'00 did not. Both of our LS400s have the Pioneer system, and they both sound fantastic. There's a fullness behind the music which is lacking in other cars. I hear details in my music collection that I usually only hear on my Bose Acoustimass system at home; I never hear them in other cars. The other thing I appreciate about the LS audio systems is that there is no artificial emphasis on bass or treble; just relentless, accurate reproduction of sound. That said, though, the Nakamichi systems I've heard in other LS400s (such as my mechanic's '99) are just that much better... Pictures are posted with IMG tags... There's a button for "Insert Image" in the new post window. First, though, you have to upload them to a site, such as Photobucket. They will also provide you with the complete IMG tags for each image you upload.
  3. '96 LS400 with 128,000 miles and '91 LS400 with 112,000 miles here... My parents bought the '96 new and only took it to the dealer for the first 75K... they finally stopped when the last 3 visits totalled between $1200 and $1500 each. The cost of ownership went way down after that! They just bought the '91 after a disasterous affair with an '03 Impala from my mom's work. 87K and tranny number two was already showing signs of catastrophic failure looming on the horizon, and it had been put in at 62K, even after the first one had four fluid changes in the time GM recommended doing one... But I'll stop there. We just sold the oh-so-wonderful [insert expletive here] today, so all is well.
  4. Allow me to introduce Patty and Selma (yes, I know what you're thinking, and yes, that is where I got the names)... Patty is a '96 LS400 finished in Diamond White Pearl on ivory leather. My parents bought her new in April of 1996, and she currently has 128,000 miles on the clock. Selma is a '91 LS400 finished in Black Jade Pearl on ivory leather. Got her for $5800 last weekend from friends of my parents for over 30 years. They were the original owners, and she has 112,000 miles. Her faults are few: - The most serious is the noisy valve lifter on the driver's side, but I will be taking care of that either next weekend or the weekend after. As is to be expected of any well-maintained 1UZ, she doesn't burn or leak any fluids in significant (or noticeable) quantities. - The driver's door courtesy switch works only intermittently, which makes the auto-off lights, remote central locking, and dome light act a bit weird at times. I'll be getting to that ASAP. - The passenger seatbelt is half chewed through from the one time they took their dog in the car, and she proceeded to chew the seatbelt where her harness was attached. I'll be tending to that soon as well. - The memory system does not work. I'll look into this more later, but it's not a priority, as it's not an important feature for me to have. The rest of the electrical accessories work. On a side note, it hasn't displayed some of the common Series I problems like the gauge problems or climate control display blackout, but I'm still knocking on wood... I clayed, polished, and waxed her yesterday, and took the pictures with her sister, so on with the pictures...
  5. Odd as it sounds, stabiliser bar bushings were the culprit for a creaky suspension in my '93 Corolla. New stabiliser bushings sorted the problem. As for the garage you're using... If they don't know which bushings need replacing, you should consider finding another garage.
  6. I really hate to say this, since it's gotta be ludicrously expensive, but it seems you have eliminated all possible culprits except one. The only culprit left is the CPU that controls that portion of the gauge cluster, assuming your '92 is wired the same way as my '96.
  7. I don't know about the Mk. I LS400, but my Mk. III LS400's low oil level warning light also comes on when the oil temperature is too high... just a thought...
  8. Probably 20+ miles of it.... MkIII LS400... you're referring to the MY '95-'97 model, correct? And at least 20 on board computers (6 making up the Multiplex Communication System)... Ours is at 105,000 miles, and had 1 squeak and 3 rattles, all of which have been remedied... the console box lid was replaced (still under warranty at the time), I replaced a clip and insulator in the rear parcel shelf to quell a rattle there, and the last was a passenger footwell air register that had come loose.

My '96 LS (actually my mum's too, but my name is on the car as well) gets between 23 and 25 mpg on highway trips (the last trip I took with 1 passenger and luggage for both of us, cruise control set at 80 mph, climate control set at 72 for driver and passenger, approximately 75-90 degrees F outside through the 300+ mi trip... 25.2 mpg).. highest I've seen with it is 25.8 on a run... On the flip side, with my mum doing day-to-day driving (15 mi round trip commute, surface streets the whole way), it never sees the high side of 16 mpg. It used to be good for 18-20 mpg in her daily commute (when it was 25 mi with more open surface streets), but in recent years, my Corolla and her company Bonneville have replaced the LS400 as the errand hopper of choice. The Bonneville (2001 SSEi, a FWD car weighing about as much as the LS) is good for 29-30 mpg on a run like above (also on premium petrol), and is every bit as quick as the LS400 up to about 100 mph, above that, the aerodynamically superior LS400 leaves it for dead... but I digress...
