  1. I removed the engine cover on my 2012 to replace the air filters at 30,000 miles. Since you got the rear ones loose you need to gently lift up on the front edge of the cover. There are 2 more holding the cover down in the middle. It is a lot easier if the engine is fairly warm. After the first time I remove the cover or shroud on anything that is rubber I will put the tinyest coating of silicone and ONLY SILICONE grease on the rubber part. I bought a tube of pure silicone grease on Amazon for a few bucks several years ago. Take the tube and squeeze out a fraction of one drop on your index finger and then message it between your thumb and finger so that it is so thin it just appears as a sheen on your finger then use your finger to apply it to the rubber part. From then on it will be much easier to remove any cover that contains rubber. More is NOT better with silicone grease, use as little as possible.
  2. The solution is relatively simple and described by puppo420 on 05-18-12 on the forum for Club Lexus. It happens when the cabin filter is changed and the Toyota logo on the filter is facing the passenger area. Turn the filter so the logo is facing toward the engine and the problem is solved. Make sure the up symbol is facing up and the air is set on recirculate.
  3. I've got 35000 miles on my LS460L and pushed it hard through the Rocky and Sierra-Nevada Mtns. on a recent 5000 mile road trip. The temperature gauge has never gone above the half way mark since the day I bought it new.
  4. My 2012 LS460L AWD has 35,000 miles on it and has gone through 2 Illinois winters. It has great traction in the snow. I still have a 2004 ES330 with 160,000 miles purchased new with front wheel drive. The 460 has much better deep snow performance than the 330. The 460 has a switch to increase the height of the body which also helps in deep snow. A 4 wheel drive truck will do better in deep snow, but I am not a "truck guy".
  5. The car has the touch screen option. When started after sitting about 2 hours the AUTO switch light comes on and all climate controls do not respond when pushed and there is no climate control or fan. After about 30 seconds the AUTO light goes out and all switches become functional. This started last winter. It was irritating to have to wait until the light went off in order to turn on the rear window defogger and the winshield defogger. The temperature always defaulted to 75 degrees after the light went out. No matter what temperature and climate control settings are functioning when the car is shut off, it always defaults when sitting for a couple of hours. If it is shut off and immediately restarted the settings are not affected. If it sits for more than a few minutes the temperature setting defaults to 75 degrees from the lo or 65 degree setting when the car was turned off. I have tried all computer programing settings for climate control to no avail. The car was driven 5000 miles in 18 days this Spring. The problem occurred every morning the car was started and then went away for hundreds of miles if the car was not shut off. After stopping at a restaurant and them returning to a very hot cabin, it was the pits waiting 30 seconds before I could get the a/c on. I'm the original owner and got the car in November of 2011. I suspect it is a computer glitch of some kind as this happens whether the outside temperature is 10 or 100 degrees, wet or dry, humid or dry. I'm tempted to disconnect the battery to force the computer to reboot, but would like some guidance or suggestions on this problem.
  6. I have a 2012 LS460 AWD that does exactly the same thing. My 2004 ES330 accelerates smoothly with rarely a downshift when I use the cruise control lever. In order to avoid the problem with the 460, I accelerate with the accelerator pedal and then set the lever to hold the speed. Once the speed is set and the car climbs a hill it will downshift very smoothly. If I am cruising at 72 mph and slowdown to say 30 mph and then hit the lever, the car does not downshift and gets back to 72 very sedately. If someone knows of a simple adjustment, I'm all ears.
  7. Guru, Thanks for the info. on the location of the oil filter. The 2 attachments of the engine diagram and oil filter blowup diagram with part numbers really help. I spent about 2 hours on the web looking and not finding the info you sent before I posted on this site. I got the Toyota part number for the oil filter and o-rings. You mentioned getting the gasket for the oil plug and the one for the sump oil plug. Can I get these from a web based Toyota parts supplier? I found a parts supplier offering 10 Toyota filters for $45. I cross-referenced the Lexus oil filter for my car and it shares the same filter part number for the late model Toyota 4-Runner. My local garage will need all the needed parts in order to do the job right. I would really appreciate any info. on part numbers or sources for the 2 gaskets you described.
  8. Hi Everyone, I am a new member. I bought a new ES330 in the Fall of 2003, drove it for 8 years and logged 160,000 miles. I bought a new 2012 LS460L AWD in early November. We are keeping the ES as a second car. The only problem with the ES was the failure of the air conditioner relay at 100,000 miles which we replaced ourselves for $75. Question: Where is the oil filter located on our 2012 LS460L AWD? The car has the engine area encased in panels both under the hood and underneath the engine. We've put 3700 miles on it and will be taking it in for free dealer servicing at end of January when it hits 5000 miles. I don't plan on changing the filter myself, but would like to know where it is to verify that it is being changed in the future by a garage. We bought the car from a dealer located nearly 500 miles round-trip from our home. We have some Lexus dealers a little closer, but lack confidence in the quality of service. The oil drain plug is a cinch to get to, but the filter cartridge system used by Toyota/Lexus may tempt some service people to just drain the oil to avoid the messy disassembly. We drive our cars until they begin to fall apart, and will keep everyone updated as to how our Lexi (plural of Lexus?) are doing. Looking forward to info on the filter question. Regards, RunSilent
  9. In early November I bought a new 2012 LS460L AWD fully loaded with a sticker of $84K (paid just under $80K). I’ve put over 3200 miles on it in 7 weeks and have had absolutely no problems. We’ve been driving a 2004 ES330 that we bought new and put 160,000 miles on. That car has only had one part replaced, an air conditioner relay at 100,000 miles (son got the relay at Toyota for $75 and put it in). We are keeping the ES as a second car now and will be putting a lot of miles on the new LS. I liked the ES and love the LS. The LS is our 10th new car in 45 years. We drive our cars until they are nearly worn out, and hope to get 8 more years from the ES and hope to do the same with the LS.
