I recently purchased a 2001 RX 300 with 88K miles on it from a Lexus dealership. It had been serviced at that dealership about every 5000 miles and they had the full service records on it. I got a great deal and was thrilled with my purchase, until I checked the oil 500 miles after I brought it home and found virtually no oil registering on the dipstick. The oil had been changed only 600 miles previous to that and I checked everything when I bought it and there were no problems. Clearly I was upset. Additionally there were no signs of leakage on my garage floor. I put a couple quarts in drove another 300 miles and discovered again no oil on the stick. I put more oil in and called the dealership.

I dropped it off 28 days after the purchase and hoped they would not only find the problem but also cover it under the 30 day warranty. They ran a compression test and told me the pump wasn't pulling up the oil correctly and they needed to replace the valve seals and all the associated parts (spark plugs etc).

Sorry, but this doesn't make sense! <_<

I agree with CODE58. I have been working with Lexus for 14 years and Toyota for 6 years before that. I don't see how an oil pump affects oil consumption. But, then again, the service consultant doesn't usually know a whole lot about cars anyway. I'm sure the primary concern was the valve seals, not completely unusual, which seems to have been taken care of at the same time. I'm sorry to hear you had a scare with your Lexus, but I'm glad to hear your local dealership stood behind their product(something you wouldn't get anywhere else). The RX300 is one of the best cars we have ever produced and we try to promote an entire ownership experience. Good luck and enjoy your car!

  2. changed the inner tie rod on my 90 ls400; couldnt get it lined up because they told me 3 of 4 ball joints are bad so im gonna change all 4

I can get the lowers at the store I work at but the uppers include the control arms. very expensive part. I found them on rock auto same part same name at my store but alot cheaper on rockauto. then i found a noname brand on an auction site very very cheap. is it worth it to buy no name oem part or does someone have a cheap website I can get them from. the car is about to turn 300k miles so i dont want to drop alot of money into it. anybody ever use no name brand upper control arms? they include the ball joints and bushings. lexus wants a ridiculous amount of money for them. my parts store wants a ridiculous amount of money for them. any good websites out there?

What's so ridiculous about a major suspension component? WAAAAAAAH! My 300k mile car is worn out! I want a good-as-new-from-the-dealer part for the price of a can of soda!

  3. Hi guys my local mechanic wants to change my rear pads for me on my 460 sel, however he has one concern regards the electronic parking brake. Can it simply be turned off via the button in the car and is there any danger of the brake shooting forward at high speed whilst working down there or is there any easy safety measure to adapt. Thanks in advance

What the hell is a 460 sel? If you are referring to an LS460, then, yes you can turn it off without concern to the braking system. Just use the switch on the instrument panel.

  4. Hey guys,

Anyone know where the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) module is?

I want to disable the TPMS in order to have a little more freedom to change rims when I want.

I know the cons but I check my tire pressure regularly and I have come to find it a nuisance as I already have had 2 sensors go bad.

All the sensors, including the spare tire, are located in the valve stem. I have seen threads on this subject before and no one knows seems to know how to disable the feature.

You can't "disable" the system. If what you are trying to do is just make the light stay off while you play musical wheels, get a pneumatic tire like that for a wheel barrow. Throw all 5 sensors in the tire, pump it up to about 40psi and leave it in the trunk. Use regular rubber valve stems for all of your many wheels and never worry about the light coming on.

  5. Man this one sure has me stumped.

No fault codes, and the dealer is not quite sure what the problem is either. Wants to start swapping parts until the problem is fixed.

No way, someone must have experienced this problem before. I can't possibly be the first.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did anything get wet? Nav screen? Did you look in the hatch to see if water is entering the vehicle where the Nav ECU is located?

  6. 97 ls400 204500 miles, engine light is on code P0340 (cam shaft position sensor bank 1), rough idle at start, loss of power if press more on gas the car jerks. i have replaced both cam shaft position sensors and engine coolant temp sensor but no improvement. any ideas what could be the problem?

Your concern may be one of a number of things. Have you had the timing belt replaced recently? I have seen improperly routed cam position sensor wires rub through after a while and create the open circuit that sets this code.

  7. I had to post it, just had to.

I bought a Rx350 last year, with high miles, but well maintained. 70K. I've had it exactly one year and a 2 weeks and let me tell you the problems I've had.

    1) 101k 4 new struts. yes I know they wear out, but these are completely shot, leaking probably should have been done 20K ago. no towing, no off roading.

    2) wheel bearing shot. The last time I replaced a wheel bearing was on my 1979 Dodge Aspen.

    3) yesterday had a piece of body trim fall off...fall off. I guess that's what they say when they talk about pursuit of perfection.

    4) fan/lights/in ability to lock door comes on about 50% of the time when you shut it off...dealer says they can't reproduce the problem. baloney.

    5) cost to get a duplicate key? $350. my Benz was $100.

    6) nav is next to worthless, can't change it when your driving, not intuitive...takes 3 buttons to get outside temp.

    7) AC condensor died...replaced for $700.

    8) and probably my favorite is the rattles...you name it...it rattles. T

I am totally amazed when I read that Lexus and this car was runner up for c&d truck of the year and keeps being top rated. this is a nice looking but crappy toyata highlander that I cannot urge anyone who reads this to stay away from it! I thought my S600 maintenaince was bad? it was expensive yes, but nothign like the frequency of this piece of crap. I had a Acura MDX for 3 year...no problems. a acura TL for 7 year...no problems at all. I just can not understand why anyone purchases a Lexus anymore.

    Ok, there you go.

WAAAAAAAH!!! I have 100,000 miles on my car and I have to fix something! ROFLMAO! P.S. The problem with your locks/lights is the ignition lock cylinder. The tumblers start to come loose and it won't trip the micro switch when you take the key out of the ignition-ECU thinks you left the key in the ignition. Get a new one and have it re-keyed to match your existing keys. Seen it a million times.

  8. Hi everyone,

I am new to the Lexus forum. I am looking to purchase a 1998-1999 Lexus LX470. I have followed these trucks and their cousins - Landcruisers for a while now. Even though I may think I know a lot - I prob do not know as much as an owner would. I would be most grateful if you all could shed some light on some trouble areas that I should be aware of. The cars that I am looking at are around the 100-130K mile mark. I have found a few in my price range - but wanted to see what I should be aware of. I have driven coupes, sedans and such but never owned a truck/SUV. I am looking forward to the transition.

I would be most sincerely grateful for any input that you all could provide ! :D

    Best

    RM

LX470 is an indesructible tank. Make sure timing belt is replaced at 90,000 miles. Some may experience failure of the height control sensor(s).

  9. The steering column disconnected internally as in the Recall relating to a circlip coming loose.

Any others with knowledge and or experience of this defect?

    Thanks.

    Al

Safety Recall ALF: "The construction of the steering shaft is such that the snap ring on the shaft may disengage when the vehicle experiences an unusually severe impact to the front wheels (for example, striking a deep pothole in the roadway). If the snap ring becomes disengaged and the steering wheel is then repeatedly turned to the full locked position, over time the steering shaft may become disconnected which could result in a loss of steering control." I have performed a number of these. You should have had yours done already.

  10. The AC light started blinking on my 1999 ES300. I turned it off while I was driving. When I came to a traffic light and stopped I turned it back on. IT KILLED THE ENGINE !! I turned the AC off and the car started back up and ran perfect. Later I tried the AC again and it still kills the engine. I am afraid to try it at a higher engine speed for fear of braking a belt.

    Any ideas or suggestions??

Anybody have the air compressor replacement guides/instuctions?

Relay for A/C light flashing applies to only '02-'04 ES300 and '03-'04 GX470 p/n 90987–02028 Relay, Magnet–Clutch. fpt2001, yours sounds like a seized A/C compressor. Earlier models- Check and adjust/replace A/C drive belt. Fans are electric and are not driven by any belts.

  11. My '01 IS300 sucks under acceleration. Cleaned MAP, Throttle body, changed plugs. Took my finger and twisted the accelerator cable to simulate a wipe open throttle. The butterfly valve only went about half way. This would explain the poor acceleration under full throttle. Now, how do I fix this?

Throttle plate won't open all the way if the engine isn't running. Throttle cable pulls electric motor that does all the work. I think you're barking up the wrong tree. Can you get the engine to rev up with shifter in neutral or park? Is the idle smooth? Is MIL on?

  12. You might want to lower the driver's window so you don't lock yourself out by accident.

With the ignition in the ON position:

    1) Take a seat inside the car next to the problem window/door.

    2) Open the door.

    3) Depress the window switch (as if to open the window).

    4) While depressing the window switch, use your other hand to slam the door shut. The window should now function normally.

    5) Repeat step 4 with more force if the window doesn't open.

This remedy worked for me more than once; there is a TSB to install a spacer, though I am unsure of the details.

The details are that a thin rubber strip is inserted between the top window run and door frame to keep the window regulator from jamming all the way up. It works and you won't have to slam your back door any more.

  13. I've had mostly lousy experiences with aftermarket brake pads and prefer to stick with OEM Toyota ones. Sewell Lexus is a good place to purchase them- with the forum discount, the pads for my 98 LS cost about the same as aftermarket ones.

I tried Wagner ThermoQuiet pads on my previous 92 LS a couple of times. Maybe I wasn't doing something correctly, but with them installed the brakes always made a squealing noise that I couldn't get to go away.

That, and on two different occasions the ceramic elements of the pad became separated, fell off while driving and caused damage to the rotor from the metal to metal contact. The second time it happened I went back to OEM Toyota pads and had no further problems.

Why not try having your rotors resurfaced before replacing them? Unless they are very worn, that should be enough and would be much less expensive than replacement.

Good call, TA. Nothing works better than OEM brake pads on these cars. Squeeling brakes would drive me up a wall!

  14. 1999 ES300 had the blinking AC light while driving. Turned it off. When at idle and the AC is turned on it will kill the engine. Turn the AC off and the engine starts and runs fine. I do not want to try this at higher engine speed for fear of snapping a belt.

Any idea on whether this is the compressor or the clutch?

Compressor seized. Blinking light is from lock sensor in compressor. Shuts compressor off when the speed of the compressor doesn't correlate with the engine speed. Now it's seized and stalls the engine immediately. The idea was to fix it BEFORE the compressor grenades and contaminates your entire system.

  15. Hi, i am just wondering what will be the signs timing belt need to be replace?also i have some loud noise sometimes when i started my car it is like something is jamming and then it will start but with real loud noise and and strong shake i can see the engine is about to jump out or i better decribe it with a wet matches when atempt to light a wet matches it will light but not like a dry one i have new sparks plugs?any help will be appreciate thanks

Timing belt replacement due at 90,000 miles. Don't wait for it to break! Shaking engine when starting is broken engine mounts.

  16. "You need a Bank2 (passenger side) catalytic converter. Stop swapping parts, you're wasting time. I've seen it a hundred times. I don't have the luxury of "trying" different things to see what works. I have to be right the first time and, I now know I am also correct. Check aftermarket suppliers for a replacement cat/conv($400-$600). I used one on the last one I did a couple of weeks ago and it worked pretty well. Not as efficient as OE when watching on data stream, but enough to keep the light off and work." Sound familiar?

  17. I have a 2000 GS400. I turned me car on yesterday and everything was normal, but my dash stayed dark, and the gauges never came on. I tried messing with the battery and changed the gauge fuse, but nothing changed. Anybody have any other ways to fix this type of problem?

Contact your dealer for a replacement instrument cluster. Not very common, but I've seen it a few times before on that same model (GS300/400) He will need to know your actual mileage so the replacement unit can be programmed to the same mileage.

  18. I'venoticed over the months that the AC compressor is very noticeable when activated. Puts a drag on the engine when you turn on the air conditioner so I took it by firestone and they told me the clutches are starting to go and it (the compressor) would need to be replaced but you must replace this system as a kit?

I've already looked up parts online and one was a thrid of the price as their quote.

Anyone do this repair before? I was going to do a Google search when I got back.

Why on earth would you ask a tire dealer to fix your A/C? You wouldn't ask an electrician to fix your plumbing. Most of those kids have a hard enough time replacing tires! The noise you're hearing is caused by a lack of oil in the compressor. May not be too late to save it. Surely, you have a Lexus dealer in your area. You may be surprised to find out that what you actually need is much less than you expected.

  19. After having the valve recall done there is a valve noise i can hear in the car..it almost sounds like a belt nois and goes up and down with the engine rpms. After a dealer towing my car he claims its all normal. Anyisight?

It's not normal. Bring it back and tell them to fix it. If they won't, ask them to show you exactly what it is.

  20. can I clean valve or ports, how to correct this? seems to be oil leak at bottom of timing cover or crank. cant tell were its from . HELP

Code 71 for EGR Malfunction is caused by a bad EGR Vacuum Modulator. Replace this and clear your DTC. Problem solved. As far as your oil leak is concerned, you probably need some cam seals, front crank seal and maybe even valve cover gaskets. Not a lot of fun to do these seals, as all of the connectors on the old LS400's are very brittle.

  21. Hi there,

I know it has been a while since the last reply, but could someone confirm if you got a way/method to lock/unlock doors with gear shift?

I have asked the dealer to do that for me, and they said there is no option at the computer to do that feature!!!?

    Thanks

RX330 has a CBEST setting available for that. I think you can do it yourself. Let me double-check.

OK. Just did it on an '05 RX330. Here's what you do: Ignition on, engine off, doors closed. Hold unlock button down on driver's door for 5 seconds, release. Door locks will give confirmation lock/unlock. Start engine. Door locks will lock in Park, unlock in gear.
