  1. Thankyou for your service to our country. I too, as many millions before you have been in the same boat. Enjoy the experience, someday you will look back and even though there may have been bad, you will fondly remember the good times and the people that you will meet. Try not to put in for a place near home or you will loose the opertunity of a lifetime, to travel, and meet new people and possibly in other countries. It is an enrichment to your worldly knowledge and I personally will never forget. When you are young it is hard to get that perspective, but trust me you will be more rounded and a better man for it. My son too followed your steps and I am very proud of him. I hope you get the same support in your journey through life. God Bless
  2. According to consumers reports lease's in all forms are a rip off. Do your research. The only one making out are the dealerships.
  3. I believe I have received better service from Toyota, because I get the impression and results that I am not just a dumb buyer, non mechanic when I do business with them. At Lexus, They seem to have an attitude that the customer knows nothing about cars, other than how to purchase them and fork over the service money. Maybe the cliental at Lexus dealerships fall mostly in that category.... I don't know, but they are very surprised when I can back up my mechanical expertise and show the poor quality work that they have performed on my vehicle. Personally, I do not trust but a very few dealerships when it comes to service. Those can be counted on one hand. Toyota locally has literally saved me thousands of dollars for the same maintenance that Lexus offered and the car came back in one piece, unlike the service from my local Lexus dealerships.
  4. I agree with RX NC , this could be a very costly vehicle if you do not do the maintenance yourself. If it were me, I would look at the 2wd or a Accura MDX. At least Honda stands behind their vehicle. Our woes with Lexus have shown the lack of customer support that you will receive. If you want AWD buy a Toyota 4runner or Accura. They are much better engineering wise and you will have better service at the dealerships.
  5. Please note you can replace those screws with Torx head replacements.
  6. I don't know if the screws are flat head or phillips, but what you need is an impact screw remover. They sale them at sears, harbor freight tools, etc. Basically you hit the end of the handle with a hammer and it provides torque to remove the screws. Motorcycle folks have used them for years. You can usually pick one up for less than $10. Please note: The bits on the driver are usually held on with a socket adapter, remove the adadpter and you have a 3/8 or 1/2 inch socket end which you can put sockets on and attack the other problem of the bolts not coming loose. Great tool to have in you tool box, all manual, but very effective for hard to remove fasteners.
  7. Please read the transmission thread problems on the AWD RX300./They can be very expensive ($4200 and up)
  8. I have been satisfied with the transmisson except for the cold morning shifts. If the tranny had not failed I would have been very happy, I concur, I would never buy another Lexus (RX) They have issues and Lexus will not stand behind their product. That has been quite evident in the treatment that so many have received throughout the US at the different dealerships. Those That have not discovered this are in the class of people that do not understand or know what the dealerships are doing to their cars or their pocket books.
  9. I found the receipt for the flex pipe it is a generic 2 inch flexible connection and can be ordered from any muffler shop, looks the ones on Honda. Cost was $65 and labor for the remainder of the $105 dollor total.
  10. I do not find the display mileage accurate. I have had my 99 RX300 since new and tracked the mileage the old fashion way, and it is way different from the display.
  11. I will continue on a 15k change cycle. before my tranny failed I was on a 30k change cycle.
  12. Try a full synthetic motor oil for better mileage. I switched from a blend to full synthetic at 115k and got another 1.5 miles per gallon.
  13. Try a full synthetic motor oil for better mileage. I switched from a blend to full synthetic at 115k and got another 1.5 miles per gallon.
  14. well I did it, installed the transmission filter (Perma Cool). Made a bracket to lift the mount for the filter 3/4 inch from the left frame next to the radiator and under the battery. Looks neat, took existing transmission line off tranny and hooked to the output of the filter and made a new line from the tranny to input of the filter. The filter is same size as a PH8 ford filter (quite large) and spins on. Filled the filter full of TYpe IV and tested car, works great and no leaks. Now my 99 Lexus RX has a real filter that can be changed by spinning a filter on and also provides additional fluid to the total. Next a cooling fan to the aux tranny cooler. Maybe to be switched on during heavy commute traffic and high outside temps. Will keep everybody posted. By the way the filter assembly ended up costing about $35 but the filters are cheap at any auto parts store.
  15. Just changed my rotors and pads on my RX300 (1999) with 118.8K miles. I purchased the Brembo disks and ceramic disk pads and cleaned all surfaces and lubed accordingly. I did note that the caliper locating pins (two) had a very slight wear pattern but were serviceable. I cleaned and lubed all four pins on both wheels and so far all brake shudder is gone. I torqued the wheels with a torque wrench and will give further feedback with this combination of Brembo and Ceramic pads. I am still waiting for the rear pads to show up.
  16. Did lexus say which fuse blew? This is a long shot, is it possible that the right turn is causing a short in the fuel pump circuit, in the steering column or else where?
  17. I take the filter out and spray with simple green cleaner, then rinse with water and let it air dry in the sun. comes out sparkling clean and ready for use. I have serviced it this way three times with no issues.
  18. Hey what is with all the suspension, brake problems on the RX300, Sorry folks. Just wondering if I was on a Lexus site or Mattel site.
  19. So, the factoried trained mechanics that we all pay for at Lexus is just another way to take more of your hard earned money. How sad a one year old car has rattles, spueeks, whatever. I guess that is the new quality control and it is normal on a RX330. My six year old RX300 doesn't have those issues other than the front shock mounts which I ended up fixing myself. That gentleman is right in that you RX330 owners should ban together and get Lexus off their butt to fix the problems. Absolutely no excuse is acceptable. Heck you can buy two Hondas for the price of the RX330 and they are probably quiet, and you will probably be treated better. The free loaner, and coffee and donuts, and bottled water in the waiting area of Lexus are to smooth you over for the poor service. I learned my lesson, unfortunately most people can't repair the car themselves. File a complaint with the State Attorney general or Bureau of Automotive repair in your state. Good Luck
  20. Go online and type in Toyo, I ordered some of this brank a few years back and got them out of Arizona, and payed no tax, They were on my door step 3 days later. good luck
  21. by the way If you use a chisel make sure it is a good quality cold chisel and wear safety goggles, I too have had to resort to that once or twice.
  22. out of shape? Are you kidding me..This is laughable at best. Now the All OEM is getting older, big time. So are the picture of dashboards from saber, opps monarch and the pictures of a brake rotor too. It is easy not to except new technology since it requires no thinking. Not even bringing oil into it, there is a reason why some oil are higher priced them others. Make sure you use OEM Power Steering fluids, OEM air, OEM tires, OEM cable straps, OEM fluids, OEM, window cleaner, OEM care care kit, OEM, healights, OEM tools, OEM gas (do they make that???), OEM water for rad..... He pushes OEM more then the Lexus dealers! But the picture as proof is great. What does it prove; again ZERO. If people did some homework they can learn some information; more then posting a picture and saying this and that. Now post a picture with some proof (that is data that supports your claim), then you might have something. Again, add information or data to support your thread. I can get a 2 year old to post a picture and say anything. Are you sure??? Based on the data I found, there are more gear and belts them chains. ← Please remove my quote from your post. It has absolutely nothing to do with what I said. Thanks. ← Well, you all are just peachy, To throw in a bad chain deal visit the old Jaguar XKE, It had two chains, one which did not have hydralic tensioning, It sucked, and you had to adjust the upper chain every 10 to 15k or else the cams would loose timing and the valves and pistons would kiss each other. My son bought a Toyota Tacoma with 190k with a loose timing chain, forturnately I told him to get more off the deal, ($500 lower) and he and I learned how to change the timing chain and tensioners which were completely worn out. Cost us $90 in parts but educated my 17 year old about changing engine oil. The original owner had not done to good a job of maintaining the vehicle. Chains are great in most vehicles, but yes are a pain to change. My Mercedes 190E chain can be changed from the top without pulling the timing front cover, but that is unusual. Have a great belt/chain day.
  23. Stay away from Midas, go to an independent shop and ask them to put the Honda style flex coupling in, it will have to be welded. Mine cost $105 out the door with the parts and labor. Midas will soak you dry.
