  1. Hey folks, I don't really know how else to say this... I just can't get the dipstick back in. It goes about 90% of the way in, but then seems to hit a wall and just will not go further, no matter how much it's jiggled or twisted. I'm at quite a loss here. If anyone can help or needs more info, please help! - Gav
  2. Greetings all, Sorry it's been so long since my last post, I've kinda not been driving for about a year! (still have my license, but moved in close to work). Anways long story short, my poor ES was recently the innocent victim of a weary driver. Luckily the guy stopped and left his details. I've had it back and forth to the repairers for abt 6 months because I wanted it perfect, and after finally getting the panels right, I'm having mechanical proplems. They returned it to me with a flat battery, so we jump started it, but the idle speed is at abt 500. I recall it being at around 1200 at start up, dropping back to around 800 after 20 secs or so. As it is at the moment, I can't even put it in drive without it turning off. I can't seem to find the screw to adjust this, can someone please post a pic of this? (if there is one). thanks all, - Gav
  3. Yep, spoke to a few places. Most are confident a camry kit would work. Should run at around $2500 AUD. So no one can see any major problems it might cause?
  4. Yeah, they were the sealed ones. I ended up opting for getting a shop to do it. I was running out of time, and couldn't stand the spongey ride any longer.
  5. I'm not sure how common it is in the states, so forgive me if I seem to talk down to you all. Due to the high petrol prices, and the distance I have to drive every day, I'm strongly considering converting my car to run on LPG (gas) instead of petrol. Given current prices, this would mean I would save 60 - 70% on fuel costs. Does anyone here have any experience with this sort of thing? I used to have a car on gas, which ran fine. There is a subtle power loss, but that doesn't really concern me as I rarely put the foot down. Any ideas you have at all would be appreciated. Cheers :) - Gav
  6. Hey all, when trying to find rear shock absorbers for my car, everywhere I've called has had to tell me I need to take it in to get checked out, as there are two different types that come with a 93 es300. Can anyone tell me how to check this myself?
  7. Hey all, I know it's been ages since I've been in. Hope you've all been well. And I hope having a trouble free lexus and being a little too busy for the net won't deter you from giving me some of that awesome advice you're all so good at :P I need to replace the rear shocks on my 93 ES. I called the mechanic, but he quoted $460 AUD (fitted) worst case scenario, and after speaking to my friend, I'm almost convinced to do it myself. Could anyone with a bit of knowledge let me know how to do this, or pass over a link if you have one? Cheers - Gav
  8. Hey guys, I had a service recently, in which it was pointed out that I need new rear suspension. Since then, I've started noticing that after I go over a medium sized bump, I can hear a second series vibrations... Just wondering, is not fixing this going to cause more damage? cheers :) - Gav
  9. Yep, it does. Although, it seems to be quieter now... Is this bad?
  10. FINALLY got my car serviced today, and on returning home, I thought I'd have a bit of a look... and a listen. I opened up the bonnet to hear a kind of ticking sound (which is louder than the hum of the engine). 6 or so ticks per second. I'm not too sure if I've heard this before, is it normal? I'm not all that knowledgeable about what I'm looking at under the bonnet, but if facing the car, looking at the plastic cover (that you remove to change the plugs) the sound seems to be coming from the bottom left corner. Any ideas? Also, when entering my driveway, the front suspension has a kind of creaking sound. I just got a full service/lube and check. The guy reported a minor problem with the back suspension, but not the front. Can anyone think of an explanation for this? Cheers hombres - Gav
  11. Our high grade petrol here actually has an octane rating of 98... (are we talking about the same thing?) Also, about 6 months ago, all of the petrol companies here came under major scrutiny, as tests found the ethanol had killed engines (I have no idea what part). Now all stations have to display exaclty how much ethanol is in their petrol. (apparantly, they used it as a kind of "filler" to make the petrol profit margines higher).
  12. Surprised it hasn't been said yet... If you change to white "fog" lights, you won't actually have fog lights anymore, just white ricer lights... The reason you have yellow fog lights is because the yellow light doesn't reflect off the water particles in fog as white light does. This is the same reason you don't use your high beams in fog... That said, I don't actually like the look of the yellow lights either. But contrary to what you said, they're probably one of the LEAST usless (unneccesary) things on your car :P
  13. Mate, that color is soooooooo nice! I'm one of those people that thinks the color they have is the best they come in... you now have me re-considering :P Is that a stock color? Or do the pics make it look better than it is?
  14. Oooooh, I'm feeling all flustered... All this commotion over lil old me? hehe, just kidding. Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to save money here, I was just checking to see if the mechanic that changed my coolant (after flushing everything) had done the wrong thing (worth noting that I did tell him it should be red coolant). So, from anyone who's still interested, in 10 words or less, should Gav go back to the mechanics and demand the original coolant or just be happy with what he has? MUCH appreciation to you guys btw.
  15. Lol yeah, when I remove the key, it just springs up on it's own... Is it maybe becasue I have it lower and further back than you guys... ?
  16. Hey guys, just a lil curious... My steering wheel is set all the way down, and as close to me as possible. When I take my key out, it slips up to the up-most position. this makes a kinda loud sound as it springs up with a fair bit of force... In anyones experience, can this create problems down the line??
  17. Hey, I was just reading a post in which SK said this won't work in our cars... A little while ago when I took my car to the radiator guy, I told him it was supposed to be red coolant, and he said it didn't matter as long as they system only had one type in it... I now have green coolant in my car, should I go back and tell him to replace it? if so, what should I say? cheers
  18. Thanks, yeah, I've just got back from working on it. I found the hinges were bent, sO I bent them back, but possibly a bit to far. The door opens and closes now, but not too easily. Guess my date tomorrow will have to slide over my lap :whistles:
  19. Hey, some one backed into my door while it was open today, now it wont close without scraping the paint. Am I able to adjust the hinges while the doors are still on? urgent advice would be appreciated.
  20. Hey guys. I used the meguires silicon gel, which didnt seem to do much for me... (apart from make the top part of the windows all "gelly", and therefore the seals, thus eventually dirtying the whole window... I also used it on the sunroof with minor improvement. What I did note is that the sound apeared to be coming from the front left side (which is the passenger in my country). However, on closer inspection (left elbow on passenger seat while driving) I noticed that the sound did infact come fro my sunroof. This was prooved when I opened my sunroof cover thingy, the sound got louder... Could be worthwhile possibly getting the sunroof readjusted as some one else mentioned in a previous thead. Hope this helps :) (let me know how you go so I can spend mimimal money :P)
  21. :D Sweet deal! I have that smell too, I just thought it was because I smoke cigars in the car! :P
  22. Ok, just back from the mechanics. Apparantly, he can't find anything wrong with the head at all. :D I guess the next stop is to get to a cooling system specialist to make sure everything is ok... Then maybe get the car serviced, as I'm abt 17,000 over :chairshot:
