  1. Hahahhaha... lol.  Don't worrie Army... both u n i r NIGHT OWLS... @ this time... we have a right to b "DISLEXIC".

Dude... just want to salute you.  B safe over there.  N Thanxs.

    Give-em Hell :pirate:

When is ur shipment date?  My friend is still over.  N my sis's b/f just came back.

Good luck wit ur ES250 or was it an ES300.

Now i guess back to the topic... where exactly is the IACV located?  Next to the EGR Valve?  You might have to be very specific b/c i have no education in mechanics.  I'm still a Noob DIYer.  But i'm glad i'm learning a lot from u guys

    i have an ES250.

dude, thanks very much for the salute, its people liek you that keep me going when thinsg get rough. its appreciated...by all of us, not just me.

i leave on valentines day as of now, but that can/probably will change. we will see.

and im not going to Iraq, just ADR.

  2. ArmyofOne, on the one hand you said your car was "nearly new condition" and on the other hand you say the PCV valve had never been changed in 15 years!  So in reality your car was badly neglected by the previous owner.

You'd be money ahead right now if you had spent an extra $1,000-2,000 buying a lower mileage '90 ES250 from a little old lady type owner who had extensive service records on the car.

i thought it was, CARFAX indicated no issues, and the leak wasnt bad when i bought it, but everything has gotten prgessively worse since ibought this car. i had the car inspected by myself, my dad and a "real" mechanic, he said there were some issues, but nothing otu of the ordinary for a 15 year old car.

and the engien and tranny RUN beatufilly (knock on wood), the motor just leaks like a sieve.

jason, i may be back this weekend to have you remove the tranny pan and fic "that" leak as well as doing the fluid change...you are the only one i trust notto power flush the trans. i have the axle for the car, so i will be out there tuesday. :)

  3. Josh came to us a couple days ago.    When I look at his ES250, I don't know where to start.  The previous owner never bother service the poor vehicle.  Josh, I will have the loaner car for you on Tuesday.

                    JPI

good to hear, is 330PM ok?

im hearing ya about getting rid of it. i just cant bear to sell this car to some unsuspecting idiot in the shape its in...its dangerous...and its unethical. just cause i got screwed doesnt mean someone else has to.

what i will end up doing istrading it in, and getting the best i can for it. that way i have my consience, whoever gets it next, has only the dealer to blame if there are problems. ;)

  4. OK here's what happened:

It all started about a few days ago when the outside temps have gotten close to freezing numbers, and I began to hear a faint buzzing sound under the hood in my '01 ES (w/ roughly 98,500 miles right now).  This buzzing sound can obviously be heard from even inside the car when started up, and the sound would grow louder when driven upon each gear change shift points (i.e. idle to 1st, 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc.)  To be honest, it really sounds like I'm running a supercharger or turbo in my ES

Anyways, this behavior continued on like it until the middle of today, when the transmission starts hesitating as I downshift when I come to a stop light.  The braking is perfectly fine, but when I accelerate, the RPMs would reach higher numbers (around 2K) to get to 1st gear, and then 2nd gear sometimes could not be caught at the right RPM (the needle would climb higher).  I'd have to let the foot off the gas pedal just a little bit until the transmission can "catch" that 2nd gear.  This is obviously not normal transmission behavior at all! Much as I hated for it to happen, the check engine and TRAC OFF lights came on about 50 miles after I noticed the transmission hesitation :o

So unfortunately, that's what's going on with the transmission in my ES right now, and I can't believe this is happening on just a freakin' 3 to 4-year old car, aaargh!  I plan to go to Autozone first to have the CEL error code checked out before I take it to the dealership.  If anyone could pitch in and provide any feedback on what could be causing the buzzing sound under the hood AND the transmission hesitation problem, that'd be much appreciated.

FYI, so far, my "car buddy" friends have said that the timing in the engine computer could be off, or that the transmission filter could be clogged up.  I had the tranny fluid changed (drain-and-fill method) about 22,000 miles ago at Lexus, and when I checked it, the fluid is darkish but still has a slight hint of red in it.  It doesn't smell burnt either.  They have told me that it could be a multitude of possible problems when the transmission acts up like that :(

    Dying for help,

    Doug

P.S. I do have extended warranty that covers up to 100K miles, so that is my only savior at this point.  Still, I really want to find out what exactly the problem is before I walk into the dealership (as they too often employ a "trial-and-error" method on problems like this)  :censored:

    cross poster... :chairshot:

i really dont know much about ATX's, so someone else will have to help... :blushing:

  5. Obviously they must not know...the very first time I took it in, they replaced the valvebody, clutch packs, and torque converter.  Every time thereafter, they did the same thing (remember, I've probably had it back there about 8 times with various problems since the first time they ever laid hands on it).  Then finally they found out that the tranny kept gettin *BLEEP* in it from the differential, so they replaced all that stuff again and the differential.  After that, probably 2000 trouble-free miles...then a leak...fixed that easily though, and then about 11000 trouble-free miles...then, it started to hesitate to shift outta first when it was cold, and it skipped second gear from time to time, so I took it back for one last checkup before I hit the 12000 mile warranty limit about 3 weeks ago...well, the head mechanic, the only one who seemed to know what he was doin and the one that had worked on it all this time, the one that had it fixed for the longest period, quit.  SO, now the owner of the shop is fixing it himself...not sure what to expect.  This time, the valve body had a failure in it (probably a shift solenoid) but they replaced the whole thing rather than the solenoid so I don't know...

well, thankfuly, my Tranny is failry solid...for now *knocks on wood*

  6. ok well i have a 96 es300,80 housand miles. is it worth it to do a tune up? liek isnt i 400 dollars?what will they do on the tuneup

also i got a question. how bad is it florring the car and takingt it up to liek 6K

i know its bad but i sometimes do it every once in a while liek race my friends and *BLEEP*. is it really bad to do it once in a while. like maybe once a week i do it in a day like 8 times.so rthatds liek 32 times a month.

im getting worried b\c i jsut got the car and my dad has had it for liek 5years and he said he hasnt fixed liek anything. nothing has broken. and that worries me. b\c its liek the longer u drive without getting a speeding ticket, the more and more u know u are about to get one.(Thats of course if u speed)

so its something liek that. im worried. what kind of things should i check that can fail.

ok, taking the car to 6,000 rpms will never hurt it. thats why the redline is there, get in the red, and you start doing damage, but even then, once in a GREAT while is ok.

a $400 tune up is rediculous, dont pay that, a speedy lube will charge you $180 or so and will change, air filter, PCV valve ( a nessesity after about 45K, it begins to push oil out the seals causing leaks), INTAKE CLEANING, and an oil change.

do a collant fulsh and a tranny drain and fill. do 2 drain and fills if the fluid is black, but dont do them back to back, do one, then wait 3K and do another.

the only thinsg internally that will fail in a motor, you cannot check visually w/out taking it a part, except MAYBE rod bearings (not sure onm toyotas, but on old chevy;'s you could just remove the oil pan and inspect them...)

  7. Wanna buy my 1993 ES300?

unfortunately, not from chicago, it was $1200 for me to ship a ford contour from Chattanooga TN to here, cna you imagine what it would cost from there?i dont have $300 in the bank anyways, i am BROKE. if this cars trans drops tomorrow, i am *BLEEP*ed...not a good feeling (*get the feeling, toyota*? )

lex, what did they say is wrong with your transaxle? ATX's are not an easy thing to deal with, they have over 12,000 moving parts related to them, crammed into a space smaller than a basketball...i woulkd advise taking it to a specialty shop, then...after its fixed...DRIVE THE *BLEEP* OUT OF IT. just so you get your $$'s worth.

  8. Den, I know what you are saying. My aunt is a very successful sales rep for her company, but she still drives her 95 Maxima w/ 175k for her appointments. She says that if clients see you pull up in a Lexus, Jag, BWM, they will think you are so well off that whether or not you get their bussiness doesn't really make a difference. Makes sense! She saves the '05 LS430 for the weekends.  B)

Welcome Jeff! ;)  I've driven my neighbor's '01 GS430, and what an awesome car!!!!  :D  She flies and has excellent brakes!

heh, my GF took my Lex today fo ra showing...that was funny!

  9. Premium it is.  Just asking.  Thanks for your feedback. :)

on th eSC430, the platform is based of the Toyota Soarer (JDM) IIRC (may not be now, because the design changed) but if it is, the base fuel over there is 91 octane, so it would make sense they require premium, also the CR makes a difference, as do engine materials.

  10. If you had searched for a few minutes you may have noticed that within the past few weeks their is common answers to this simple fix

    try the words

    idle

    or

    iacv

oh...duh...i fogot about the IAC valve, check that, and clean it.

i stand by my original statement, yoru engine will not cost anywhere near $5500 to rebuild, cause i (as a mechainc) can rebuild an old mopar V8 for under $1,500 P&L.

  11. I ask you honestly........would you pay $2000 for it?

no, knowing what i know about it, never

Watch for one of those sale days where dealers will give you $2000 for anything you can push pull or carry onto the lot.  Then talk financing.  Used cars and new cars are more like 5-10% (not 18%...that's a credit card).  Look for a first time buyers program.  Go through a credit union as opposed to a bank, they are little more leanient.  You never know as long as you apply.  You have a residence and a steady job, right?  Give it a shot.  You don't have to try to bag a $35k loan your first time out.

    steviej

i have a steady job yes, the residence, no...im still living with my folks, dont pay rent.

You don't need a loan to trade something in...

you do when what you want to trade in is less than the amount of the car you want to buy, and you dont have the balance in cash though, thats my problem. :D

i had to ride a bicycle 20 miles a day before i got this car, for 2 months (almost 3) because i had to save money to buy a car, when i had my wreck i had $18.79 in the bank.

if i could make myself afford it, i would. i may yet still....

and yes, 18% is a car loan, thats what my parents paid on their first new car (in 1982...Nissan Pulsar).

i dont want NEW. i want a 1999 -2001 Jeep Wrangler, or a 1997-2000 ES300 if i can find one for under 10K, and get a loan. my bank (bank one) refuses to finance me without a cosigner. as does MECU (Motorola Employees Credit Union), because i have no credit history...

    help!

  12. Perhaps on a trade in if they are willing to take it.  Heck, I wouldn't even trade it in...I would sell it privately to a mechanic or something for parts.  If money is the 'only' issue and this car doesn't have any real sentimental value...a used honda accord or toyota camery may be a better choice now (like juan1 said...get a lexus down the road).

i probably will, i like those jeep wranglers... :)

i do love my lex too...

but i cant trade it in, i have never taken a loan out on anything, so i would need a cosigner...my parents refuse, and i dont feel liek paying 18% interest, i might was well fix this.

  13. Well, I'll put my spin on it, since you asked for opinions. At 14 yrs old, and

having multiple problems, I simply feel you need to move on. On the basis

of it being a rare model, my thought is it's going to be most expensive to repair

(please note I used repair instead of fix---hint, little problems, then bigger

    problems, then more expensive problems).

And as far as buying someone else's problem, it comes down to how

well that vehicle is cared for, it's mileage, and the biggie "Why are they selling

it?" Just consider, if you sink a boatload of money into this vehicle, you still

have an older vehicle. If you update, the generalized life expectancy should

    naturally increase.

    Good Luck,

    PharmGuy

all good points, but can i possibly get $2000 for it in this condition?

and thanks Steviej, i appreciate the poll. :)

and 2 the guy who suggested +4 plugs, i refuse to use them, i had a chjevy S10 that i used them in, and 2 of the elements broke off of the plug and went into my cylinder, scoring cylinder walls, it also put a hole in my #4 piston. sorry, i just dont trust them.

  14. From what I've heard, J-B WELD doesn't work too well on exhaust systems. This might be because of the wide heat range that these exhaust components  have to work in. Besides, your resonator might be too rusted out to salvage.

no actually its not, it looks like somebody drilled a hole in it, its perfectly round, but you did answer my question, and thats what i figured, any other opinions? i have filled holes in engine blocks (like modifying for engine swaps, not for repairs of holes in engine blocks LOL) using it, but thats a little different.

    any other opinions?

i suppose i coudl try it, worst case scenario, it doesnt work.

  15. Just giving an update:

I did finally get my car!

I've had it for a week now.

We got the 2005 ES330 Black Garnet, with the cashmere interior.

Added the spoiler and chrome wheels as well.

    It's very nice.

I must admit that the Mark Levinson doesn't seem to sound as nice as the Nakamichi did on our old LS 400.

The sales guy said they switched to the Mark Levinson because the Nakamichi doesn't have a stereo system that intergrates with the Navi. Bummer!

Also, we have a 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring van.

The navi in the Honda is much easier to use than the Lexus one is.

The car does have a nice smooth ride and so far, we are all happy with it.

glad to hear it, and thanks for updating us!!

  16. Cool.  The poor engine was being suffocated.

not exactly, the poor engine was sucking in unfiltered air, notice how there is no gasket aroun the filter in the pic? thats because the gasket that was on it turned to dust when i touched it. i literally had to vaccuum it out of the bottom of the airbox. so it was sucking in dirty air for mrobably the last 100,000 miles, im amazed it still runs as good as it does. the motor/trans has NEVER told me no when i tell it to do something. and thats the way i like it. :D

99lsguy, im not sure how it is on an LS but on an es, you dont have to remove any vaccuum hoses to get to the intake, only the big rubber intake hose.

Well then, at some point in its life there had to be a high pressure drop across the filter. God only knows what all happened over that period of time. I do hope it's all better now.

been 197 mile snow, just not quite to a half a tank yet...so far so good.:whistles: :D

    Good deal.

oh and one more thing, make sure to clean your MAF and IAT while in there, thast what waws making mine run all funky, they were both filty!

  17. i have a hole in my resonator, rigthbefore the connection to the pipefor the cat. its small and perfectly round, like someone drilled it there, is it possibel to fill it with JB weld? i dont have th e$$$ for a new resonator right now, and i really want my engine quiet.

  19. Thanks all for you help.

Well, FInally I got my car back it has new sunroof. I still need to test it to make sure that problem is solved. BTW: I noticed, my old sunroof had polarized glass, this one doesn't...not sure which is better? I sthat I problem? I am sure I will lose my sleep on it, but is that something I should be reporting to dealer?

    SL

i wouldnt, in fact, mine is polarized, but i intend to have it tinted, that way i can leave ths shade open most fo the time and nto have to worry about sun fade. i like the shade open.

if yours isnt polarized, it shouldnt cost more than $30 or so to have limo tint put on it, then you never have to worry about it again :)

but if you dont like it the way iot is, and you would rather have polazed, take it back. :)

  20. I'm a big fan of the GS400, trying to get myself into one.

I never thought i'd go import but alas i need a 4 dr car to cart people around in since my new profession is real estate.

gotta have something with power and class since all i drive is 2 dr sports cars.. can't give up acceleration.. :whistles:  :)

Man, if ur a realtor, u shouldn't use a luxury car to escort clients to show properties. It just gives them an idea someday to file a lawsuit if there's a small loophole in the contract, cuz they know you've got the $$$

drive a nice car, but nottoo nice. my GF uses a Honda Accord V6 w/ leather to do her showings...already has 220K on it...and its a 2000!

  21. Cool.  The poor engine was being suffocated.
