  1. TunedRX300, Thank you very much for your feedback. You were right in target! The CAT Converter is one of the very few parts that fall under the EPA 8 years / 80,000 mile warranty. Luckily my 1999 only has 70,000. I owe you one.
  2. Greetings I just took my 1999 RX300 into the shop to change the 2 drive belts (V-Ribbed and Drive (Pump)) and was informed that the “Front” Catalytic Converter has a crack in it . I definitely hear a slight exhaust type leak when the accelerator is depressed (also had some squeaking …. until the belts were replaced). Dealer estimates $350 for the parts and 2 hours of labor, for a total of approx $550. Anyone have any experience with cost and trying to change the CAT themselves? Also … would be interested in a description on where the “front” CAT is physically located and any dismantling steps that I need to take to view the unit. As I understand there are two CAT Converters (one expensive $1000+ the other ~300-350). The one that has the crack is the less expensive unit. Thanks in advance for any assistance!
  3. Just wanted to follow-up and let anyone else that refers to this post that the directions helped get the tranny fluid to a the correct level. Besides watching out for the battery terminal, also be cautious that the rag used to wipe off the transmisson fuid does not get caught in any of the fans that are moving when the car is running. Allost happen to me. Thanks again for the responses!
  4. RX300 FWD Transmission Fluid Level Question Just did a drain and fill based on the feedback by others in this forum. Pretty straight forward, but have a question related to the appropriate fluid that should have been drained for a ‘drain and fill’ procedure. According to the 99 owners manual, 3.3 Qts for FWD and 4.1 Qts for AWD. On my 1999 FWD RX300, I drained 4 Qts / 8 Ounces, just from the tyranny pan after removing the 10mm Hex nut. I refilled with 4 Qts, but I am hesitating to add the additional 8 Oz because I think it was overfilled and I may cause damage by adding an additional 8 Oz. The previous 2 fluid changes were done by Lexus dealerships. So I figured I would replace what was drained (measured exactly). Again I don’t want to create any problems. The 99 RX3000 FWD has 65,000. This is the third tyranny fluid drain and fill, first by me. Does anyone have any input on what they drained from a FWD version of the RX300? Should I be concerned about damage related to overfilling transmission fluid, by replacing the quantity that I drained and that has already been in the transmission for the past 20,000 miles (by a Lexus dealership)? Any input on getting an accurate measurement from the Tyranny DIP stick? I have seen one post that provides some insight. However, specific o the AWD version of the RX300. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
  5. the only rx300 problem i used to have was a nerve-racking glove box rattle! :chairshot: ← WWEST … How did you get rid of th e glove-box raddle? Overall my 99 RX3000 has bee great. The only DYS nightmare I had, was trying to fix the right rear marker light. Mission accomplished and lots of fun 
  6. Thanks for your help! I did not realize what a project changing a light bulb could be. A metric ratchet / socket 10mm and alan wrench set is essential in performing this task for anyone trying to change the rear marker. I had to: 1. remove the mud flap 2. remove the latch and pins holding the wheel well 3. pull rear bumper outward for access to the light socket. 4. IN MY CASE --- I had to change the light housing and connectors because they were corroded ($44 @ Lexus) being evaluated for complete or partial refund. I did not have to splice the male connector. Hope this helps others!
  7. Sorry ... too quick with the trigger. If it was for the front marker, the marker would be in front of the mud flap not behind it like in my case Appreciate your support!
  8. Thanks for the response. I will try and let you know. Your repsonse was for the rear marker .... correct?
  9. Folks, I have searched the entire Forum and Google as well, for the procedure to change a right rear marker light bulb on a 1999 RX300, without success. I tried to access light by taking the storage compartment out. I have access to the wiring the goes through a small hole in the body of the vehicle, but no physical access to the light socket. I also tried to access it from the wheel well by unlatching the top of the plastic wheel well latch and removing one of the plastic pins that secure it to the frame. I pulled the wheel well out a bit so I could see the back of the housing. There is a very small channel between the frame and the bumper that leads to the light. I could not understand how I could fit my hand into the channel to gain access to the light socket, so I put the wheel well back into place. I would appreciate any feedback on how to change this rear marker bulb, as it is holding up my new State Inspection Sticker that has already expired.
  10. Just wanted to circle back and close off on this topic. My problem ended up being a bad ignition coil on number 1 spark plug. Toyota dealer fixed it for $225.
  11. SK, Thanks for taking the time to respond. I cleaned the IAVC and the Mass Airflow sensors with no luck. I went to a local auto shop and had a scan the computer contents done. I have a P0301 'Misfire Detected, Cylinder 1 ' (idles and accelerates poorly). I took the plastic engine cover off and reseated some of connectors to what I think are the spark plug connectors. Again I had no luck. Any other suggestions on things I can try before I take it to the shop? The RX300 only has 57,000 miles on and the owner’s manual indicates that the plugs should be changed at 90,000 so it appears odd that they would have gone bad already. Cheers
  12. Your feedback and help is appreciated! My 1999 Rx300 with 57,000 miles had the ‘Check Engine’ Light came on 2 days ago. Just prior to realizing that the light had come on I noticed that the RX300 started to idle very roughly (vibrations and engine stuttering). I searched this web site today, to see if I could gather any ideas on what may be happening. I homed in on the issues related to a dirty Mass Airflow Sensor. I thought I would take a shot in the dark and clean the Airflow sensor following instructions posted on the bulletin board. For example, I disconnected the cable harness that contained 5 wires; removed the 2 Philips head screws securing the sensor into the air intake tube located behind the air filter; cleaned the small glass filament with ‘Carb Choke & Throttle Body Cleaner’; Let stand for 5 minutes; gently blew and wiped off any loose carbon deposits and reinstalled. Unfortunately this did not work for me. The RX300 idles rough and the CEL is still on. I DID NOT try to reset the computer by taking of the negative terminal of the battery (Is this required to reset the unit to see if Air Sensor cleaning actually worked???) I realize that I need to get the Problem Codes. However, I am concerned about driving the car (to Autozone) to get the codes and causing any extensive damage to the engine that may result. Are there any comments from folks related to the risk of driving the car with the symptoms provided? Note that I also checked the following: 1. Gas cap is on tight 2. Oil was last changed 3000 miles ago and is at the appropriate level. (regular oil changes have been conducted 3. Transmission fluid is at the appropriate level. 4. Battery is the original but has had no problems starting and maintains clock setting when the vehicle is not used for several days. Any suggestions or other ideas are appreciated. I really can’t afford a large Lexus bill these days. Thanks again!
