  1. My 1990 LS400 with 196k miles has a loud ticking (or soft tapping) I just noticed yesterday, coming from the right rear of the car. Could it be the fuel pump? Are there two pumps? It is a steady tap. every two seconds.... The car has been running rough for quite awhile now, (but will sometimes run for days just fine) but the ticking noise is definitely new. I just tonight started searching for the answer to the rough running, including the trunk hinge wiring harnes, MAF, and...I see the fuel pump could be the culprit (along with coils, plug wires and the other usual electrical culprits). I did a search on the tapping and did not come up with anything. Thanks!
  2. Alas I no longer have the results, I think it exceeded max levels of N02?.... :cries: Any info regarding the EGR pipe, ie where the crack might be, whether it can be sealed if accesssible? Thanks!
  3. First my car passed smog but I could not get the Ca. cert because the engine light would not come on. The light was burnt out so I replaced it, but then it would not go off. Took to dealer to get code read, they said the check engine sensor was OK and the oxygen sensors were "probably" OK but I would need to bring back to get the EGR pipe cleaned out (carbon). Had EGR pipe cleaned, light came on after 20 mi. I reset the light just outside a smog cert to see if I could at least get the cert....but NOW it fails the smog emissions test. Prior to all this I had the "usual" egr pipr crack but never fixed it, the car always passed smog. Now I think I have to deal with it to trouble shoot why the car will not pass emissions test (maybe the crack in the egr pipe is problematic now that the carbon was cleaned out?). This is expensive! I peered at what parts of the EGR tube I could with a mirror on a telescopic arm, could not see the crack I have been told of. Does it usually occur in the same place on all these cars? I'm a cheap *BLEEP* and would like to try sealing it with JB Weld if possible or something else, but cannot find the crack... Any advice is appreaciated! Oh Yeah, the car is a 1990 LS400 with 165k miles, original O2 sensors as far as I know. And if I need new O2 sensors I have seen two types of aftermarket 3-wire sensors, for about $150 each or $50 each, will the cheaper ones work? I plan on selling the car in a year. Thanks!
  4. Thanks for the info, guess I'll bite the bullet and take it in, I'm such a cheap *BLEEP* :chairshot:
  5. My Check Engine light stays on, need to get it off for smog cert (comes on again afetr disconnecting the battery). Dealer checked it out, sensors and EGr valve OK, said the EGR pipe needs cleaning. Sounds like someting I should be able to do myself, but how???
  6. Sorry, it was end of a long day, funeral etc., only called the dealer to make certain it was in stock and save a trip. Just followed your thread, as I need three bulbs you just saved me over $20...as I am going to Radio Shack in the AM :P Just have to unfold and straighten the leads from the bulb from the back of the socket and pull the bulb out. If RS does not have the bulb, my local electronics shop will, they have "everything". If your shop knew enough to ask if you needed the grey or black socket version, they should know the part #. My 1990 has the black...good luck.
  7. Don't know the part number...$8.50 for a tiny bulb/cap unit from the dealer :(
  8. You Rock Took me 5 minutes and there it is! Can you believe the local independant Honda/Acura/Toyota/Lexus shop, of allegedly good repute, told me they had to "pull the whole dash" and quoted me $137 labor plus the part? :chairshot: Firstime i've used this forum, I'm sold
  9. Went to get my car smog checked, was told the check engine light was dead. How does one access this to replace bulb or unit? Thanks, had no luck with a search, first time to this forum, car has 160K trouble free miles. :D
